Re: Ron Rivera fired

I thought the argument on keeping EB around at least until spring, is that anyone wanting to sign him has to compensate us because he's under contract, not because of the minority rules?

On RR I think part of his problem was his desire to stick by his staff as far as possible. He stuck with Turner longer than he should have and had to be virtually forced to sack JDR et al. I think loyalty is an admirable trait, but a HC has to do what's best for a team rather than for his friends. That often means being ruthless even with long time buddies.

Parting ways with Kyle Smith

In the 2019 Redskins draft room, Kyle Smith (director of college scouting) asked the room whom they were going to draft at No. 15? Sources have agreed there was silence, and one voice finally answered: the owner himself. The choice was going to be Dwayne Haskins.

Smith reportedly proceeded to implore the room to please consider drafting one of three players. But the owner had spoken.

Rivera was hired the following January. Smith basically constructed the draft board and led the room through the draft. Rivera was pleased and publicly praised Smith for his leadership in that draft.

But in later months of that 2020 season, Rivera grew cold toward Smith; not praising him, nor even mentioning him. Rivera determined instead to hire Marty Hurney and Martin Mayhew.

Yes, Rivera got what he wanted, but he also lost what he had. In Smith, he had a young man, full of energy and a voracious work ethic. He also possessed, in Smith, the one man who carried courage in the organization to tell Rivera and Snyder what they needed to hear.

Smith understandably departed following the 2020 season. In all three drafts (2021-23) Smith would clearly not have drafted as Rivera and the Marty’s did. Do you think Smith would have reached on Jamin Davis at No.19? Valuing draft choices, can you even imagine Smith trading up for a long snapper (Camaron Cheeseman)?

Re: Ron Rivera fired

I don't understand the love for Kyle Smith. He left here three years ago. Some were clamoring for him to be the GM here in 2021, and guess what, he's still an Assistant GM. In 2021 he drafted TE Kyle Pitts, CB Richie Grant, OL Jalen Mayfield, and Darren Hall in the first four rounds. Other than Pitts, they all suck.

His drafts with the Falcons aren't impressive. K Pitts, D London, and B Robinson are good, but I don't feel like we've missed much.

He was so shitty that the 49ers wanted him but lost to the Falcons.

Man, you don't have a middle ground. Seems like you either really like someone or think they're an asshole lol.

Re: Ron Rivera fired

Truth is factor in all Ron had to deal with and health issues .. it's not likely anyone else would have even stayed the course .. I truly believe that he had way too much on his plate and should have never been in total control of draft .. He needed better coordinators that's for sure .. But in the end it was all on him

Shitty may be a bit strong. I would say he's ok, average, unsought, not highly regarded... I don't hear his name being thrown around as someone who is on a short list of GM candidates, but maybe I missed that.

This. I've never had such a discrepancy between my level of respect for the man and the coach...

Re: Ron Rivera fired

RR might be a good hire for them. He was awful here as a HC but he might find success over there. I really do wish him well.

Hopefully he can talk them into trading for StJuste, Davis and Forbes.

Re: Ron Rivera fired

It'd be nice if the Eagles D forgot what linebackers were for four or five years.
