Re: The coordinators
underwhelmed by the Manusky promo, but I'll still root hard for him, just have my reservations.
If we can drastically improve the talent level at Dline, ILB and Safety, then we'll have a shot at a decent season. If we go dumpster-diving again, then it will be just what we saw this year. Time for Scott to shine. |

Re: The coordinators
Funny how it works, I wanted Cavanaugh or Callahan to be hired as our OC, but didn't want internal hire for DC. That being said, Manusky is my favorite DC in the NFL now. HTTR.

Re: The coordinators
Per Keim:
The Redskins have made it official: they promoted Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator and hired Jim Tomsula to be the defensive line coach. They also named Matt Cavanaugh as the offensive coordinator and hired Kevin O'Connell as the quarterbacks coach. The team announced the moves this morning.

Re: The coordinators
I'm not really excited over the Manusky announcement, however, I fully expected it. I believe if Bradley or Pettine had wanted to come here, the deal would have been done while they were being interviewed. Having said that, as a life long fan, I'll fully support Greg and hope that he doesn't continue the failed approach that Barry had.
Now, SM just needs to bring in some better talent on that side of the ball. I'm glad to see Cavanaugh get promoted. Also glad to see Callahan is content with continuing to coach the offensive line.

Re: The coordinators
It really does feel like a 'nowhere to go but up' kind of situation. In the end, talent in the front 7 and at safety is the biggest problem. McCloughan needs to get busy, no matter who the coordinator is.
It's just that I think Pettine could have gotten more out of the resources McCloughan is going to get than Manusky will. But either way, it's definitely better than still having Barry. And Fewell. The more I read, the more it seems like that guy just blew chunks.

Re: The coordinators
I listened to Manusky's interview on 980 today and few things stood out to me...
1. high energy and wants communication in the defense 2. Running a 3-4 on first 2 downs, then a Dime package on third downs. Some 4-3 His focus is to attack more and stop the run. Bring pressure from the DLine 3. He mentioned that he wants to still work with the OLBs in some capacity. I hope that Jay has better judgement and hires someone for that OLB role. Manusky sounds like he underestimates the responsibilities of the DC role. We need a specialist to help that position while he functions to bring energy to the overall Defense. 4. He wants players to understand the positions and coverages that they play. After that interview I feel that he is not a scheme guy. The defense will be simple and the focus will be to play with energy and good communication.
