Re: 2022 off season thread part 1

We will come from this off-season with a young QB and a stud #2 WR.......possibly a few good young linemen.....the ingredients for the defense is there......I want to see Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis switch positions......

That's an amazing stat. 9 in an entire season is hard to believe.

It would be interesting to see the run/pass break down for the 90s NFL vs the 2020s NFL. It seems like the NFL in the 90s was still a run-first league but that could be a misconception.

I think its harder to keep sacks low these days because teams pass more and now the high paid defense players are CBs and DEs who are pass stopping specialists. In the 90s defense was designed to stop the run, today they are designed to stop the pass. You are correct, getting 5 elite pass blockers is very hard. Bottom line this team needs a QB to compete in the modern NFL.

It was. Rule changes have made passing easier since then.

This is 8 years old, and even then the trend was heavily towards passing over the last 20-30 years. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...in-nfl-history

Agree on the increase in importance of DL and DB's but it's also worth noting the trends in athleticism. DL in particular have been getting faster while maintaining ideal playing weights; look at Montez Sweat. Technique has generally improved too. 80's and 90's was very much about power to overcome blockers, largely to defeat the run game. Now finesse is just as, if not more important.

That's what I was saying. Ryan, Jimmy G, Winston etc. would all be band aids, which is fine if they have a plan to definitely get a top QB in 2023. Ryan could definitely come in here and make us instantly competitive in the division. Not convinced on the others in that group though.

im not sold on bringing a statue in here... as good as this OL "ranks" i've seen a hell of enough times where TH was running for his life within 2 seconds and complete protection breakdowns plenty as well. This line is a losing schreff and one injury away from being subpar as a lot of other middle of the packs lines which until they improve and show on a more consistent basis? Is what they are to me.

I sort of agree, but wouldn't bringing a proven commodity here, especially Ryan, have it's own benefits? Veteran savvy in handling pressure packages, proven leader, improved capacity to attract good FA's etc. Of course we need to make it happen first, and I'd certainly spend at least one pick on an OL.

However they do it they have to get a legit QB. They just cant compete with Heinicke starting.

It was like that when depleted with injuries and covid.

Leno is slow and gave up a couple of sacks because of it, but overall he does the job well (locking him is a smart move, especially given the price).

Our starting line up Leno - Flowers (big fan) - Roullier - Scherff - Cosmi was really good.

Take the right part out and put Lucas and Schweitzer (the later is really really good IMO, high quality back up to "ok with him as a starter"ish) and we were still ok.

Take Roullier out and we were still kinda ok with Larsen or Schweitzer at C.

Now take Larsen, Schweitzer and Flowers out and yes the OL started to suck ass with the only starting OL being their slow LT.
At times the line up was Leno - Charles - Ismael - banged up Scherff - Lucas...

Btw, I think Flowers and Schweitzer both need to be extended ASAP, both only have one year left, the former is 27, the later 28.

Definitely agree. The OL was much better than expected

I 3rd this. Be nice to extend them each for 2 more years on top of their last year.

Oh, and there are trillions of quality UFA LBs, no excuse to not bring at the very least one this year...
KJ Wright (again), Hightower, Barr, Ingram, Kirksey, Minter, Alexander, Ogletree, Jamie Collins etc... Even Nick Vigil who I saw making plays for the Vikings could be signed on the cheap for quality depth/competition.

If we don't bring at least 2/3 LBs through FA and draft I will start to lose a lot of faith in this regime.

I keep hearing Bobby Wagner might be cut by Seattle, if that’s the case I would be all over him like a cheap suit.

AJ Johnson might be a nice addition.

I'll trust them to evaluate which veteran fits their scheme best (they did sign WJ3 to ask him to do things he had "never done before", but I don't watch 2% of the tape they study, so their opinion is still more educated than mine), but I want significant signings at this position. Not just a couple of UDFA and low key no name vets...
