In-season padded practices would plummet under new CBA

This has to be a mistake. 14 padded practices total during the 17 week regular season. I'm all for player safety but my God. When are lineman going to get a chance to learn how to block? How are D-Lineman going to learn to use their hands? Gametime isn'twhen

The parties have agreed that, during the 17-week regular season, teams will conduct only 14 practices in pads.

Let’s repeat that. During the 17-week regular season, teams will have a maximum of only 14 padded practices, less wear and tear on the body. More time to lift weights and train. Most players get better at fundamentals during the season but loose strength. Now with the extra time players will be able to get physically stronger as the year goes on while not destroying their bodies with full contact drills.

More specifically, teams can have 11 padded practices during the first 11 weeks of the season, with two padded practices permitted in a given week only once. Then, for the final six weeks of the season, a total of three padded practices may be conducted.
Quick Edit: Just found out shells don't count as a padded practice. This actually might end up being a good thing. Usually players loose strength as the season goes on due to the fact that weight lifting after 2 to 3 hour full pad practices is counter productive. Now we'll see less wear and tear on players. Football won't be nearly as dangerous.

Your edit kind of makes your initial complaint moot

Less contact should = less injuries.

This.

Nothing worse than losing a key player in training camp due to injury.

I'm not so sure about that and it seems most injuries in practice are not hitting related. More pulls and tears which happen away from the contact.

Re: In-season padded practices would plummet under new CBA

When I played football, our coaches used to baby us when it came to full contact and we were rarely able to hit each other in practice. I played mostly defense, and I felt like our lack of getting reps tackling and getting a feel for it in practice really hurt our tackling overall. Maybe most of our players just sucked, high school is not the NFL. While I do feel these restrictions will probably reduce injuries and wear and tear on the players, there is a slight possibility that it may negatively affect how many broken tackles we see over the course of he season.

During the season weekly practices are mostly for installing game plans and walk-throughs anyway. Teams work on fundamentals during training camp.

Sure, but it doesn't mean other people wouldn't have their own opinions on the new practice rules. This story has to be good enough for at least one old timer to complain.

Dag nabbit, I remember when we busted heads without helmets or pads for 16 hour-a-day practices. Bubba's head even got ripped clean off. AND WE LIKED IT!
