I didn't know that they could manipulate the 5th year option contract number for players like Scherff, that's awesome.

We're in really good cap shape.

Smith's injury was unforseeable, but i just can't stop thinking about where this team would be if we hadnt traded for Smith. We'd have 20M extra in cap space this year and Kendall Fuller. which means we probably woudl have been in a positon to cut Norman and sign other really good/elite starters in free agency.

Very smart observation, hadn't really looked at it like that.
Snyder and his FO's should be barred from making trades. Seems like they are snake bit when it comes to trades.

Why does everyone want to get rid of Norman? He's still a top cover corner. I love him. He's always hustling and trying to force turnovers.

In your scenario, which starters would you have wanted to sign in FA?

We don't want to get rid of him because of his play. He's making 14M per year. He's worth maybe half that. To cut him this year would only save us half that, and then we'd have to have spent that money on a corner in free agency to replace him, so there's really no point in doing it.

Next year he's set to make the same, but its not guaranteed so we can cut him and then use that same money to sign TWO corners of josh Norman's caliber.

I think it's a $6M penalty if they cut him this year and a $3M penalty if they cut him next year.

But back to my original question: In your scenario, which starters would you have wanted to sign in FA?

None this year. As i said, the cost/benefit this year would not have been worth it due to our cap situation.

Gotcha. I just thought you said if we had never made the Smith trade then we would have been in a position to cut Norman and sign some good or elite starters in FA.

I was just curious which guys you had in mind when you said that.
