R.I.P, Al Davis. He did a lot for football, and the Raiders were just starting to look relevant again. His death, even at his age, took me by surprise.

Great post

R.I.P. Mr. Davis . One of the pioneers of the NFL ( former commis' AFL ) , took a franchise to " greatness " as a coach , GM and then owner . Maybe J.K. Cooke can get that remach now ....... R.I.P.

Seems they're perhaps not the only ones being hypocritical

RIP Al Davis, the Raider mystique you created was unmatched.

The Autumn Wind is a pirate
Blustering in from sea
With a rollicking song he sweeps along
swaggering boisterously
His face is weather beaten
He wears a hooded sash
With his silver hat about his head
And a bristly black moustache
He growls as he storms the country
A villain big and bold
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake
As he robs them of their gold
The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He’ll knock you ’round and upside down
And laugh when he’s conquered and won.

Mike Shanahan once ordered Elvis Grbac to throw at Al Davis’ head - Shutdown Corner - NFL*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
It was 1994 and Shanahan and Grbac were both with the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan, the offensive coordinator, was working with Grbac before a game against Oakland. [...]

[...] Davis, as he does before almost every game, was walking the field, talking to players and others. Shanahan pulled Grbac aside, Grbac recalled, and gave an unusual order: ''See Al Davis over there? I want you to throw the ball right at him.''

A shocked Grbac replied: ''I can't do that. If I hit him, do you know what he could do to me?''

Shanahan looked at Grbac with his intense glare and said, ''Throw the ball.''

So Grbac did. He threw a tight, hard spiral some 30 yards directly at the head of Davis. At the last second, Davis saw it and ducked, the ball missing him by only a few inches. Davis, his hair ruffled, then made an obscene gesture at Shanahan, witnessed by a former Raiders coach who confirmed Grbac's story.

I know, I had the same exact thought: Who knew Elvis Grbac could throw a tight, hard spiral 30 yards and barely miss his target by inches?

Great story. One of the reasons why I immediately warmed to Shanahan was because of his well-known hatred for Davis. Atta boy, Shanny.

By the way, the picture of Shanahan that is featured in the story looks remakably like Craig James.

Young Mike Shanahan was a real douchebag. He wanted 7 TDs in that Super Bowl for Steve Young. Watch the America's Game on that Super Bowl for confirmation if you like.

I wonder if the Raiders tried to put a little extra "something" on Elvis that game? Great story.

Wow this is pretty remarkable:

On final play, Raiders had 10 men on the field | ProFootballTalk
