Post Anthony Dorsett - Jail for 30 years

Tony Dorsett's nephew, Anthony Dorsett, was just sentenced to 30 years in prison for running a drug ring. He avoided life for murder by agreeing to identify some others involved in the operation he ran.

Nephew of NFL Hall of Famer testifies against drug cohorts in Beaver Co. shooting
Wednesday, April 27, 2011
By Torsten Ove, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Hoping to avoid life in prison at his sentencing Thursday in federal court, an admitted Aliquippa drug kingpin Tuesday took the witness stand in Beaver County Court and fingered three of his underlings in the 2006 killing of an innocent man.

Anthony A. Dorsett, nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett, said three of his cohorts admitted to him in separate conversations that they sprayed a makeshift music studio on Gregory Street with gunfire on Oct. 21, 2006, killing Jordan Cain, 20.

Mr. Cain had nothing to do with criminal activity, police said, and just happened to be sitting in a chair in front of a computer near a window when the men peppered the house with dozens of rounds from an AK-47 and a 9 mm pistol. Everyone else inside managed to hit the floor, but Mr. Cain was struck multiple times.

After a daylong preliminary hearing, District Judge James DiBenedetto ordered Billy Love Dawkins, 27, his brother Travon Dawkins, 24, and Rhett

Spears, 27, held for trial on homicide and related charges.

All three are already in prison after pleading guilty to their roles in Mr.
Dorsett's drug enterprise.

Mr. Dorsett, 34, the government's star witness, has already testified for the prosecution in federal court and admitted Tuesday that he was testifying against his friends in the homicide case in the hopes that federal prosecutors will recommend leniency. Under federal drug statutes, he faces a possible life term.

He said Billy Dawkins, his top lieutenant, called him the day before the killing and told him that someone had fired shots at him while he was in his car with his young son. Mr. Dorsett said Mr. Dawkins told him "It's on," meaning a recent truce between Mr. Dorsett's gang in Linmar Terrace and a rival gang in nearby Griffith Heights was over. The next day, Mr. Dorsett said, Mr. Dawkins told him about the killing, saying the three drove to Griffith Heights and started shooting.

Mr. Dorsett said Mr. Dawkins told him the men ran, discarded their latex gloves on a path, ditched the car in a lot and threw their guns under a nearby pickup. In later conversations with the other two men, Mr. Dorsett said, they expressed concern about the gloves because they knew police might be able to collect their DNA and put them at the scene.

They were right, according to court records and testimony, because police found everything and said they were able to match DNA from the gloves to Travon Dawkins and Mr. Spears.

All three accused gunmen were indicted by a federal grand jury in 2008 along with Mr. Dorsett and nine others.

Federal agents and local police identified Mr. Dorsett as the leader responsible for distributing at least 60 kilograms of cocaine and 10 kilos of crack between 2003 and 2008.

Billy Dawkins was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison last year and Mr. Spears was sentenced to 27 years. Travon Dawkins received five years.

This is not the same person as Anthony Drew Dorsett Jr., the son of Tony Dorsett. Anthony Drew Dorsett Jr. played defensive back in the National Football League from 1996 to 2003, making Super Bowl appearances with the Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Raiders. He is now working to develop a career in broadcasting. Anthony Ali Dorsett, the guy indicted, is his cousin.

Why do idiots do a drive-by? If I wanted to kill somebody, I'd just wait till they came out of that particular place and shoot them. Why in the **** would you spray a building down and not even know if you hit your intended target. Criminals are so lazy. We deserve a better class of criminals.
