I see. Yeah Norwell getting that amount probably is a benchmark for Scherff. Norwell was 1st team All Pro last year, Scherff hasn't accomplished that yet. But suffice it to say Scherff will still be deserving of a contract in that general vicinity. Maybe $12M per season, maybe $13M. But whatever, pretty close.

2018 is the last year of Scherff's deal, but we can and probably will exercise his option for 2019. That means we'll need to get him under long term contract by 2020. The team has roughly $100M in cap space in 2020, so we can certainly afford it.

So all that said, no I do not think the Redskins will put the brakes on their free agent spending over the course of the next 3 weeks because they need to be sure they have room to pay Scherff. It's clear the team is in bargain hunting mode now, after having signed Richardson. So any player they get from between now and the draft is not likely to be a high dollar signing - I think they'll get maybe one or two mid tier guys and then a few bargain basement signings. Nothing that would restrict them from locking up Scherff.

I imagine we will lock Scherff up along the lines of TW. Other than the fiasco with the old qb, our FO has been proactive and player friendly with players we want to keep.

I don't imagine we will have to adjust this FA plan at all for his extension next fall.

Ok good deal, thanks for the info. I think we will sigh at least 2 more starters , DRC and hopefully POE. That way we can get a G and RB early.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2018

Original post is updated to reflect the resigning of Brian Quick and Zach Brown. Zach Brown's deal is said to be worth 3 years and UP TO $24M. I'm going to assume some of that is backloaded per typical and built into incentives, so preliminary estimated cap hit is 5 million.

Meanwhile Quick has to be close to veteran minimum coming off a year with 76 yards receiving.

Estimated remaining cap space is $17M.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2018

Original post is updated again to reflect the now known cap hit of Dustin Hopkins. He counts $1.4M this year, not the $2.0 I had estimated previously.

Cap space is now estimated at $17.8M.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2018

Thank you. The original post is updated. The Redskins gave Richardson a $10.0M signing bonus and kept his base salary low in the first year. So the $10.0M bonus counts $2M per year on the cap, plus his $1.5M base salary and a $500K roster bonus, it adds up to a cap hit of only $4.0M.

Schaffer and Allen have structured this in such a way that it intentionally keeps the cap hit low in this first year, which to me is a strong signal that they intend to add more players over the course of the next several weeks and really maximize the cap space they have, which now sits at $19.8M (estimated).

Richardson's cap hit goes up in future years, it will be 7.5M in 2019, 8M in 2020, and 10M in the years thereafter. But it is structured in such a way that the Redskins can cut him in 2020 and clear cap space if they so choose. This is essentially a 2 year commitment - albeit one that I think will go longer than just two years.

I read this as a master stroke by Shaffer, and a signal that the Skins are nowhere close to done in free agency, though they will be patient and let the market come to them.

Once I see the structure of Zach's contract we'll learn even more.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2018

Doug again made it clear that the team will solve the RB issues, so unless they go sign Murray or A.D it def looks like we will draft one in round 1 or 2.
