Sources: Suns a 'yes' away from acquiring Shaq for Marion

The seemingly improbable pairing of an aging Shaquille O'Neal and the run-and-gun Phoenix Suns is just a final "yes" from the Suns away from happening, according to NBA front-office sources.

I don't get that move for the Suns. They're not getting the old Shaq, they're getting old Shaq. He's a shell of his former self, hasn't been able to stay healthy, his style of play isn't a good fit for the Suns and it's a major hit on their salary cap.

It strikes me as a desperation move after the Spurs added to some depth to their bench with the signing of Damon Stoudamire and the Lakers made the great trade for Pau Gasol (how do you like being in Memphis now Juan Carlos?!).

I'm sure if he can get relatively healthy Shaq could help a team down the stretch, but I don't think it's the Suns

Yeah this makes absolutely no sense from the Suns' perspective. Maybe they think they'll have trouble matching up against Tim Duncan. But either way, Shaq doesn't jive with their current group (running).

And did I mention Marion is awesome?

Que?

This is gotta be the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. Shaq was due to retire like 2 years ago, and now the Suns are going to give up one of their Top 3 to acquire a center who can't run for half a season?

On the flipside, it'll be nice to see Wade and Marion co-exist...

I'm a big Suns fan and I kinda think this is a bad trade,
but then I realized Marion is gonna leave after this season anyways
so why not? If they have Shaq healthy for the playoffs it'll be huge.

Although I love Marion I believe his contract is done this year.

Re: Sources: Suns a 'yes' away from acquiring Shaq for Marion

It makes no sense. Shaq should have retired 2 or 3 years ago. He can't stay healthy and won't be healthy for a while still. It has nothing to do with cap room, although Marion has said he's unhappy being the third option for the Suns for a while.

The Suns offense is based on running and scoring a LOT of points. Shaq can't run, so they'll either have to go down the court on breaks without him, or slow down to a half-court offense to use him. Amare can move to his natural position, but Shaq is not the Center they needed.

My only thinking is that they feel they can't win with their current system and wanted a big man to compete with San Antonio, Dallas and now the Lakers with Pau Gasol.

Stupid move.

Robbery by the Heat though. Maybe they can move out of the basement now.

I'm standing by still the move is growing on me and I think it will pan out in the end,
meanwhile you can throw it back in my face when the Suns get knocked out in the first round of the playoffs ha ha But I've had enough of them dominating all season only to lose in the playoffs, so count me in with this move. Something had to change.

It's a done deal.

Screw Shaq!! You know he just wants to get over on the Lakers. But in the end Kobe, Bynum, Gasol and Fish will finally get by the Suns in the playoffs and win the west once again. (Boston vs. L.A in the finals would be sick) I am so pumped up about the Lakers landing Gasol. Kobe is ecstatic so that should shut his trade rumors up. Not to mention the Lakers are a pretty young team with a mile high ceiling. I have a feeling that championship caliber basket ball is back in L.A. for many years to come.

Screw the Lakers! The Suns will own you again like they do every year!

You mean the last two years? I think the Lakers have gotten the best of the Suns over the long haul. By the way how many Championships do the Suns have??

This is exactly why the Spurs are twice the orginization as the Suns. What a completely moronic deal. Great for the Heat though!
