Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009

In this thread, CrazyCanuck and I will periodically update the Salary Cap status of the Washington Redskins. As players restructure, resign, are signed as free agents, drafted, cut, and traded, we will do our best to keep the community updated on the cap implications of each transaction. This thread is also designed to house analysis and insight regarding the Redskins' likely course of action in free agency and the draft. The salary cap can often provide an indication of the team's intended approach to free agency - aggressive vs passive, etcetera.

In short, the numbers in the table below illustrate that the Redskins are $9.4 million under the cap as of Saturday March 7th, 2:00 PM. The moves listed below illustrate how The Warpath expects the team to operate in the offseason.

Numbers presented below are in millions:

Quote:
Current Status - Updated Saturday March 7th, 2:00 PM
2009 Cap Fees for Redskins' Top 51: $107.5
2009 Redskins Dead Cap Money: $11.5
2009 Redskins Cap Total: $119.0
2009 Redskins Salary Cap Limit: $128.4
Current 2009 Redskins Cap Room: $9.4 million

Expected Signings - savings(hit)
Other Offensive Lineman ($3.5)
DL or LB ($2.0)
Phillip Daniels ($2.0)
Pete Kendall ($1.5)
Khary Campbell ($1.0)
Rookies ($2.5)
Players Removed from Top 51 $3.3
Total Expected Signings ($9.2)
Warpath’s Projected 2009 Redskins Cap Room: $0.2 million

Other Ways to Reduce the Cap Number:
·Cut or trade Casey Rabach (clear another $2.3 million)
·Cut or trade James Thrash (clear another $0.85 million)
Quote:

Summary of Executed Transactions:

Andre Carter: $0.83 Expected Savings, $2.4 Actual Savings
Carter was extended as opposed to a simple restructure as expected.

Antwaan Randle El: $0.59 Expected Savings, $2.0 Actual Savings

Ethan Albright: Signed to a one-year contract for veteran minimum as expected.

Marcus Washington: $4.5 Expected Savings, $4.5 Actual Savings
Washington was released as forecasted.

Chris Samuels: $0 Expected, $2.4 Actual Savings
Samuels was extended, adding a team option to pick up the 2011-14 years.

Cornelius Griffin: $2.0 Expected Savings, $2.3 Actual Savings
Griffin was extended as expected, but the cap savings were greater than anticipated.

Anthony Montgomery: ($1.0) Expected Hit, ($1.0) Actual Hit
Tendered as expected.

Kedric Golston: ($1.0) Expected Hit, ($1.5) Actual Hit
Tendered as expected.

Shaun Suisham: ($1.0) Expected Hit, ($1.0) Actual Hit
Tendered as expected.

Phillip Daniels: $2.0 Expected Savings, $2.3 Actual Savings
Contract voided as expected.

Albert Haynesworth: ($7.0) Expected Hit, ($7.0) Actual hit
Signed as forecasted.

DeAngelo Hall: ($4.0) Expected Hit, ($5.2) Actual Hit
Re-Signed as forecasted.

Shawn Springs: $0 Expected, $6.0 Actual Savings
Springs was released, presumably to allow cap space for offensive line recruitment.

Derrick Dockery: ($3.5) Expected Hit, ($3.2) Actual Hit
Dockery was signed to a contract similar to that of Fred Smoot. Welcome home, 66.

Jason Taylor: $0 Expected, $8.5 Actual Savings
Taylor was released after he and the team apparently couldn't come to an agreement on a restructured deal.

Dirk Johnson: $0.46 Actual
Signed.

Washington Redskins Rookie Pool Allotment:
When available, the rookie pool will be posted here.
Cap status updated as of Saturday March 7th, 2:00 PM.

Do you have a ballpark dollar "limit" for what we can spend in FA this year? I'm guessing we need to go out and get either a starting OLB or starting strong side DE and possibly a starting o-lineman. Does it look as though we'll have the cash?

Man looking at the numbers if we restructure Springs even for half what he's currently due, that dude better play close to 16 games next year (and beyond). He's been spoiled rotten IMO and somehow would almost rather just see him cut. Nobody going to pay him close to what he's made here.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009

The story of the plan laid out is basically this:

- The Skins are $3.0 million over the cap, with 46 players under contract.

- Because I'm assuming the 30% Rule is in effect, the Skins can only clear about $2 million in space with contract restructures.

- They can then cut Marcus Washington to clear $4.5.

- They can extend or cut Springs and Jason Taylor to clear more space. Cutting them clears the most, but from everything I hear and read, Springs is still viewed as an intregal component of the defense, and last year Vinny said Jason Taylor would be around more than one season.

- They will have about $10 million in space to sign players. But they need a kicker, and then they need to tender Golston, Montgomery, and Doughty. Then they need to get Albright and Demetric Evans resigned. Then they need to plan on an amount to sign rookies, and I'm assuming they want to resign Hall. They also need to replace Kendall. In the end, I expect them to eat up all $10 million just from resigning their own guys and draft picks.

I don't see them having space to buy any free agents, unless they make deeper roster cuts than what I'm predicting here, or unless they choose to forego DeAngelo Hall.

Much can change over the coming weeks, so CC and me will keep this thread updated. The purpose of this thread is to educate the community, so feel free to ask questions.

There is a saying. " God does for you what you can't (or won't) do for yourself." Looks like we're being forced (led?) to address our lines and build through the draft.

Yeah man good point, it's his information I'm using (and I should note one more time, his sheets are exactly what drew me to this site).

Digging into the information and comparing to other Salary Cap info around the web on the Skins, I can tell you that CC's information is crazy accurate, even more accurate than the source JLC quotes on Redskins Insider. Whatever you're paying CC, it ain't enough! He's the man.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009

If we cut Marcus but can't replace him in FA it's either Blades or a rookie starting right? That doesn't sound good. Blades can probably handle it but we def need another solid backup (maybe they see progress in Fincher).

I hear what is being said about Springs importance to the D but jeez he is expensive and if we sign Hall... just a lot of talent in the secondary when the LB corp looks pretty shallow. I'm trying to be objective but have to admit I like Marcus' character over Springs from what I know of the two guys. This is just seems like a bummer situation...

I've got it... Taylor should play for free in '09. It's pretty fair.

That was the hard part of laying out this scenario, ultimately I don't know who the Skins will decide to part with. It could be Washington, it could be Taylor, it could be Springs, it could be all three.

So it's hard to tell, I'm just going on my best guess.

But if anything, this shows how tight things will be for the 'Skins if we don't get a new CBA. They'll be limited in free agency, and forced to make some tough roster decisions.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009

Spot on. My only point is this: an increase in the Salary Cap by $7 million implys that defined gross revenues for the NFL increased by 5 to 6 percent over 2007.

But since the economy crashed in September, is that even a reasonable assumption? I mean, you have the TV deals, and the season ticket sales were already wrapped up at that point, but the single game ticket sales and merchandise revenue had to drop a little bit from last year.

Basically, I think that the cap projection of 123 mil that was made prior to the economic downturn probably affected gross league revenues, and I would be surprised if the cap pushed north of 119 mil.

And if this can be construed as an excuse for getting rid of Casey Rabach, then count me in.

LOL at the Rabach comment.

You're absolutely right, the $123 million cap limit is a preliminary projection at this point. The NFL will publish the actual cap limit in the coming weeks. The economic downturn could indeed result in a lower number than previously expected.

Who replaces him if we're too broke to meddle in FA? Jansen?
