Hall of Fame Inductions - #81

This weekend will mark the seventh time Art Monk has been passed over for induction to the Professional Football Hall of Fame. I would like to remind everyone to take the time to click the link in my signature, and sign the petition in support of his election to the Hall.

With the renewed attention to Pro Football's highest honor, I hope that the members of this site who have not signed it will take the time to do so, and that they suggest their friends and family do the same. I'd like to have 1,000 signatures by the end of the weekend - which would be a feat, because we aren't even halfway there. I am never surprised at what the members of this site can do if they put their minds to it, though.

I'm in.

I just signed the petition. It's a travesty that Monk's not in the Hall. He should have been voted in on the first ballot.

Give me some Grotto's.

I signed but I realy don't think they care how the fans feel. I heard some converstion about Monk and they talked as if his records are antiquated. The point is that most all records become antiquated at some point. You could walk through the hall of fame and through about 90% of them out with that kind of thinking and its probably more like 98%.

Good point, Monk's record and achievements should speak for themselves, but instead the HOF voters would rather come up with excuse after excuse to downplay what he did.

I know Marino, Elway, Young etc.. deserve to get in, but they only allow 4 a year and people bow down to the QB's and they get in on their first year of eligibility. Meanwhile how old was the deacon when he got in, and 2 of their deserving enshrines this year are dead. I have a feeling Monk will get in when my grandkids are around to hear me tell tales of his greatness. They need to either let 6 in a year from now on so they can catch up, or they need to stop kissing the QB's asses.

Mr. Wilbert and I worked together at Grotto Pizza about 15 years ago. I thought he was dead or in prison by now...

Yeah i think eventually art will get into the hall, but it'll probably be when im old and gray. I mean, Fritz Pollard just got voted into the hall this year, and he played in like 1920. He got into the hall like fifty years after he retired.

Re: Hall of Fame Inductions - #81

Art Monk definitely deserves to be in the hall of fame, but he was so incredibly smooth, quiet, and low key, that apparently, no one else in the league ever even noticed him. He had deceptive speed, due to his long strides; impressive leaping ability; great hands; and was fearless. I never remember him celebrating his own accomplishments, whether it was a touchdown or a first down, because he knew it was a team effort, and he was always there for the team.

I don't begrudge any of the many quarterbacks in the hall of fame their status, but it does seem that they have an easier time getting in. I must be honest with myself, though-- I've always loved Johnny Unitas, but I can't remember who any of his favorite receivers were...
