I would wager to say that he could have said no.

Re: Number Seven Belongs To Theismann

JT didn't have to say anything publically. But as we know Joey loves to talk so this was right up his alley.

The team needs to do something already to address the protected/unofficially retired numbers deal. Start retiring some numbers or let them be worn. It's not that hard. I say if you're a HOF player the number should be retired. JT falls into a gray area, not HOF, but still a very important player in the team's history.

I think Joe did the classy and right thing. Haskins asked Theismann the right way and Joe answered in the way to help out the team without making it an issue.

If #7 isn't a legend then neither is Nameth.

Also, F Peter King!

He's a legend to skins fans but overall? He had very avg numbers, I love Joe the broadcaster, never saw him play so I don't want to diss the guy but stats never lie. He does have a ring but so does Rypien and Doug. Are their numbers retired?

Joe T is a REDSKIN legend!! Here are other Skin Legends... Art Monk,Riggo,Darrel Green,Mark Mosley, the Hogs.. Dexter,Grant,Charles Mann and Doug Williams..fun bunch.. heck even the scabs who won games during the strike are legends to me😀!! You can’t retire all the numbers.. I hope Haskins career is as successful as Joe T was! In my opinion the single most important person in the history of the Redskins is Coach Joe Gibbs!

Actually, I see the issue of his status among Redskin fans as being the most relevant factor. While he may not be great from an all-NFL perspective, within the Redskins franchise itself, Joe T started the most games, passed the most yards, and threw the most touchdowns. The QB position has always been the primary position in football, and the franchise is 80+ years old, so the guy who managed to be the all-time leader in these stats would reasonably create among fans some special sentiment for his number. I assume King didn’t address this angle of it. (Although I admit not having read it, because I no longer read anything he writes.)

QB1 Best Season: 3400yards, 23 TDs Won the Superbowl

QB2 Best Season: 4900yards, 25 TDS, Missed the playoffs

QB1 is a Cowboy legend and FOX broadcaster.

QB2 is a highly paid "just a guy" in Minnesota.

You can't compare stats from 80s/Early 90s.

You also have to factor in charisma/likability.

Nameth doesn't have good stats and isn't an elite QB but he had giant balls, won the biggest game he played in, and banged Farrah Fawcett. LEGEND!

Yup...I saw King walking around the training camp. He's a self promoting bum like most in media these days. PK is Straight trash

Re: Number Seven Belongs To Theismann

Theismann is a Skins legend no doubt, but let's be honest he's not a Hall of Famer. Doug Williams is also another team legend, but we seemed to have no problem with Jason Campbell wearing #17.

Or John Friesz, Danny Wuerffel, Rob Johnson, Michael Floyd, etc. I think because it's been happening since the mid 90's, nobody batted an eye.

But since no one has worn #7 since Theisman, it's a little different feeling here in 2019.

Ever since they outlawed the head slap over 40 years ago the rules have evolved on a yearly basis to favor the offense. You really have to compare a QB against his peers in the same era. One stat has meant the same for 100 years and that is wins and loses. Theisman's .629 win rate puts him ahead of a lot of good quarterbacks. Also of note Theisman has a career rating of 77.4. Hall of Famer Dan Fouts who played almost the exact time as Joe was a 80.2.

Against his peers Theisman was around 10th place year in year out in stats. He was a consistent winner. Who knows if he was on one of those teams at the time without a good defense or running game, where he would have been stat wise. He didn't need to throw for 300 yards a game like Fouts to try to win. Fouts only won half his games.
