Al Saunders Helping 'SHAPE' Raiders and Jason Campbell

Al Saunders Helping 'SHAPE' Raiders and Jason Campbell - Silver And Black Pride

As much as this seems like a memory lane thread, it is not. The only thing important about this article is that it just shows how batshit stupid using stats as the end-all-be-all of gauging a player's performance and the insight on how one OC actually evaulates how well his QB is performing.
Quote:
• Site: Did the QB recognize the pre-snap defense?

• Hot: Did he direct the "hot" receiver where to go?

• Alert: Did he correctly alter the play at the line of scrimmage?

• Progression: Did he correctly read the defense and locate his options?

• Execution: How were the mechanics on his drop and throw? What was the result?
Quote:
Generally, Saunders expects his starting QB to be close to 100 percent, assignment-wise, and to receive A's on efficiency. The genius of the Coryell offense, from which Saunders, Joe Gibbs, Mike Martz and others descend, is that, in theory, it has an open receiver on every play. Many of today's offenses -- those of the Colts and Pats, especially -- place a lot of emphasis on "conversion routes," patterns that are adjusted on the fly depending on the coverage. You need a great QB to direct those schemes.
Quote:
...he groups the stats according to different facets of the game. For instance, if he wants to judge his QB's effectiveness on third down against seven-man pressures, he can pull every grade from every play under those circumstances. Once there, he can view stats such as completion percentage and yards per attempt in the proprietary context of the play's intent. If his QB's SHAPE stats are subpar -- 80 percent, C -- Saunders will spend more practice time on those situations.

"That's how you use statistics to help QBs play better," he said. While it may sound complicated, it's just another way to stay ahead of the competition in an increasingly stat-driven—and pass-happy—league.

Curious what score Saunders gave Campbell when they were both in Washington....and at the same time, I'd almost rather hear about Favre

Interesting piece nonetheless

Re: Al Saunders Helping 'SHAPE' Raiders and Jason Campbell

I saw this thread and was soooo ready to come in and say..... get over it. both have moved on. lol.

But the article just goes to show what I have not been saying so eliquently.... and that is although some here look to the stats and talk about them like they are golden, we fans really don't have a clue what was actually going on one each play and where the QB was supposed to go with the ball and how he changed the play. Only the coach's know and only they can make an informed decision as to whether the QB is doing his job or not and if he's playing well.

The coach's look at so much more and have so much more info to work with. We fans only know what we see and only use half the statistics the coaching staff has access to. It's easy to say QB X threw whatever # of interceptions and whatever completions and say he sucks or he's decent but in reality that does not define the QB. Because we don't know on the play with an interception if the QB read the defense well or not and if he did, did he re route the WR correctly, and did he go through his progressions right.

Favre? What are you looking for? I know he said he's not ready to retire, but for some reason I just get the feeling he's refering to he might like to get into being a QB coach. Technically he would not be retiring, but he would not be slinging the ball and getting hit either.

So I go back to asking if your interested in him are you thinking or wondering if he could be picked up by the Skins as the backup QB?

I thought that Campbell was definitely progressing in some areas in Saunders' last year here. I also believe that he was a MUCH better fit for that Coryell-style passing game vs. the WCO. Guys like Trent Green and Todd Collins have both said that Saunders' offense doesn't fully click until year 3. With Campbell already familiar with the concepts, he will have a head start.

C'mon it is just another hype article to get the idiots in Oakland excited about another mediocre year, just like the idiots at the Wash Post do for us. If the same Ho and coaching staff stays around for a bit, we will have way more to cheer about than Oakland ever will. Al Davis fires a coach even if he is winning!!!!!
