Re: Commanders free agency thread

Settle played 20% of defensive snaps last year. I'm not sure why we're up in arms about not paying him.

Scherff was never coming back.

They probably intended to keep Matty I, but once they upgraded the QB position and took on that contract, some moves to clear cap space had to be made. Tough decisions - that's why they get paid the big bucks.

I'd gladly sacrifice Matty I and E Flowers for a QB that can get it done.

Wentz bounced back last year, def showed some life. I like the QB move especially faced with other options we coulda taken. I’m not sold on this QB class in the draft and I don’t think a lot others are as well with so many QB moves in trades and quick signings.

I thought it was a sound move to get Wentz, I like his arm and admire his sometime wreckless play.

We will see

And I guess we do not know if they tried to restructure Matty I's contract to get him to stick around. I'd like to know if they did. He was a 5th rounder, if memory serves, and I am not sure what round we picked Settle (4th?). These guys can be had in the draft. But when you see guys play well, work hard, and contribute, if you don't have to overpay to keep them -- and it isn't clear we did -- it would have been nice to see them stick around. I am actually more concerned about Flowers because we are now down our two starting guards, and Flowers has played very well for us. Again, I wonder whether we tried to re-sign or re-structure to keep him with us. It's hard to be too critical not knowing.

The Titans just cut Julio Jones. Whoa. Just one season in TN. I wonder where he ends up. I hope not Dallas of Philly, but of whom need WR help. I know he's past his prime, but the dude's a freak of nature.

Since the start of the 2017 season, Carson Wentz has thrown 124 touchdown passes, the eighth-most in the NFL during that span.

Wentz has thrown 3+ TD's in 16 games since 2017, tied for the ninth-most in the NFL. Washington as a team has had eight such games during that span.

Wouldn't extend Payne yet. I need to see the performance of Sweat and Young this year. Extending those guys will cost $25M or $30M per year, if they play like they should be able to.

Ends are more important than DTs, and I'm not sure we can afford to pay Payne and still have the cash for Sweat and Young.

Ideally we would have cut Ioannidis and kept Settle, but Settle wouldn't want to stay here behind Payne and Allen, he wants to play, as he should. We were never keeping Settle.

And as much as I loved Ioannidis, he has not been impactful the last few years since the knee. These kinds of salary cap decisions are those that all teams with QBs on their second contract have to deal with.

Depth should be filled out with young guys with upside and bargain FAs. We should not be paying our depth guys starter money.

Hopefully they can but I’m worried he’ll stay out west somewhere

Agreed. Myles Jack was signed right away by the Steelers (2yr 16M), we can not afford to not have a significant addition at MLB. Do it now.

B Wagner is much better than M Jack. You won't get him for 2yr 16M. Would love to have him though.

Wonder what the plan is for MLB...

Sure will be more expensive, but he is 31, so he might not be top of the market expensive either, will he ?

Hard to say. He was just making 18 M / yr with Seattle. Wonder how much of a reduction in pay he is willing to take - probably won't have to. My guess is he can get at least that from someone. What he could potentially bring to this defense - it's hard to put a $$ amount on that.

Oh jeez yeah I had misread otc I didn't realize his apy was so high ! Yeah not sure they are willing to spend that big on this position...

Joe Schobert is said to be released by the Steelers following Myles Jack's signing, what do you think ?
