Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread

The number of Covid-19 cases linked to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan has risen to 61, according to Tokyo 2020 organizers.

"The total number of positive cases linked with accredited personnel is 61. But it's important to look inside the numbers: among the total, 33 are positive cases from residents of Japan, 28 are from the Olympic Committees arriving from overseas," the spokesperson of Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee Masa Takaya said Monday.

"Regarding this 28, we need to look at the 22,000 people arriving in Japan. Looking into the positive case rate, the number is nearly 0.1%," the spokesperson added.

Tokyo 2020 did not reveal the names nor nationalities of the new cases. The Games are set to begin on Friday.

The Yankees were allowed to return to baseball on Friday, but without two of their best players. Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela, along with the backup catcher Kyle Higashioka, were placed on the Covid-19 injured list after testing positive for the coronavirus. All are expected to miss at least 10 days.

While many of the positive tests among Yankees players and staff this season have been so-called breakthrough cases, where a player who was vaccinated tested positive, the team said that was not the case for all of Friday’s positive tests, meaning at least one of the players was not vaccinated. But the Yankees did not identify which players were, or weren’t, vaccinated.

Judge, one of the most popular Yankee players, was at Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Denver, and was near many of the game’s biggest stars, igniting concern that the game’s best players may have been exposed.

Professional golfer Jon Rahm nearly fell to his knees on Saturday after learning that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and had to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament in Ohio. In that moment of anguish, did he give any thought to everyone else affected by his decision not to vaccinate weeks ago?

Rahm had just finished the third round (of four) at the PGA event when officials delivered the bad news next to the 18th green. He held a six-stroke lead, and in golf, that’s nearly insurmountable. Had he won, the first-place prize was $1.67 million. Second place was worth $1 million.

Im starting to accept that COVID will be here long term.

Easier to say personal choice when its individual sports like golfers .. harder to say when its a team sport.

Wish everyone would get vaccinated but with this in terms of skins football .. guess we have to have to just wait for the eventual news and hope for the best.

We should just release every player that isn't vaccinated and sign free agents that are. Safety 1st!

Players fighting for backup spots should definitely worry about teams keeping vaccinated players over non. Don't give teams an easy reason to let you go.

I'm amazed that people deliberately put themselves at risk for something that's preventable but that's what idiots do.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread

Two NFL teams remain under 50% vaccinated less than two weeks from the start of training camp, a person familiar with the vaccination rates told The Associated Press.

As for Friday, Washington and Indianapolis had the two lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates among the 32 teams in the league, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the league hasn’t released the numbers, which are changing daily.

Pittsburgh, Miami, Carolina and Denver have the highest vaccination rates and are among 10 teams that have achieved at least 85%. About 73% of players have been vaccinated. Teams on the lower end of the vaccination table face potential competitive disadvantages.

The NFL doesn’t plan to cancel any games this season, the person said.

In a memo sent to clubs last week and obtained by the AP on Thursday, the NFL, in conjunction with the NFLPA, updated protocols to allow teams traveling to joint practices to have their daily maximum of Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals. The traveling party will be either 100 or 140, depending on the club’s vaccination percentage. The club must limit the number of individuals traveling on the team transportation to 85 but may travel additional Tier 1 and Tier 2 staff up to the applicable daily Tier limits separately to attend the practice.

Also, beginning at the start of training camp, teams will be required to develop a method to visually identify fully vaccinated Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals.

Utilizing color-coded wristbands or credentials are recommended but clubs are free to implement other methods.

Last month, the NFL and the players’ union updated protocols to loosen restrictions for fully vaccinated players and to encourage others to get the vaccine.

Unvaccinated players must continue to get daily testing, wear masks and practice physical distancing. They won’t be allowed to eat meals with teammates, can’t participate in media or marketing activities while traveling, aren’t permitted to use the sauna or steam room and may not leave the team hotel or interact with people outside the team while traveling. Vaccinated players will not have any of those restrictions.

Anyone read about the penalties if an unvaccinated player breaks protocol?

I dont think wed be able to keep these young guys from doing young guy things like go out, socialize etc .. especially when they see half their vaccinated teammates going out and eating, socializing etc

On road trips .. unvaccinated players have to stay in their room? Keep their masks on? Not socialize and play madden with other teammates? Good luck with that.

So the NFL is putting players in white collar prison? Sounds legit. Fucking mafia. And we know it's not because they care about the players. Just trying to protect their money coming in.

Everything is so extreme with you. Sometimes you have to make compromises in difficult situations when there are competing interests to consider.

People are doing their best and trying to come up with guidelines and ideas as best they can. Covid sucks but we have to act like adults and make the best of a shitty situation.

I assume you run red lights and hand out cigarettes to toddlers .. because "fucking mafia", right?

Lighten up ... being an adult is about being able to deal with the shittier parts of life and not throwing a tantrum about it.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread

I would think unvaxxed life in the NFL would get old really quick. Hopefully that will push players on the fence to get the shot.

Of course the NFL wants to protect their money coming in and so should the players. Its unfortunate the NFL has to enact these rules to protect adults from their own stupidity, stubbornness or combination of both.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread

I thought I read somewhere that all the Tier 1 and 2 staff had been vaccinated already, which would be coaches and medical staff.
