This guy was the chargers gm that got fired. He was a jerk and was the guy toying with vincent jackson during that whole spectacle. He allowed many of his good players walk because he was cheap and a jerk. He also screwed over tomlinson at the end of his career in SD.

Luckily he won't be making those decisions, he'll likely just evaluate talent, so it's not a huge deal.

I'm with the others. If all he is doing is talent eval, I think that this is a great move.

scouting consultant sounds like a good role for him. No problem with the move, hopefully he can bring some good talent

^^ Yup. Say what you will about the way he managed the end of certain players stays in SD (Going back to Brees). He did always manage to assemble a talented team.

I am not worried about Smith's ego, cheapness or general reputation for being a jerk. His ego will be dwarfed by Shanahan, his cheapness will be countervailed by the Dan's check book, and his jerkiness will well handled by Allen's professionalism.

This is Shanahan's team and Smith has got to know that coming in. If not, Allen will set him straight quick enough.

There's zero risk in this move. Proven eye for talent who was moved into a position in SD where he didn't fit. Great scout / talent guy, bad at the business side of it and negotiations.

Bruce Allen and Shanahan sit firmly atop the business and negotiation side. Just as Eric Schaeffer is the ultimate salary cap advisor, this guy is a great talent advisor. Makes sense, surround yourself with the best specialists and delegate appropriately to take advantage of their talents and skill sets.

Agreed. It's a 'why the heck not' kind of move IMO.

Yeah...he's a major douche but has some value and zero power here relatively. Love to know what his roll is going to be more specifically within the current process.

I think AJ Smith the talent evaluator is very good at his job. AJ Smith the egomaniac GM is not very good at his job. I'm glad we got evaluator portion of the deal.

Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor

I think AJ Smith is a good addition. And although he was definitely a big reason that the Chargers went from the top young roster in the league to talent depleted in the last four years, he was also a large reason why they had so much talent to begin with.

The only thing that makes me nervous is that he becomes the most qualified general manager type in the building the day he walks through the door, which could effect the role of others in the organization, such as Morrocco Brown. Advisor is such a general title that it's hard to tell what he will be actually doing here.

Nervousness aside, the Redskins had to do something to improve their pro talent evaluation. This could certainly help that.

Yep, this should be the only concern. Otherwise great addition.

If you're a GM long enough in the NFL you're probably going to get fired. That's the nature of the business. Bruce Allen has been fired twice. I'd also say that the ownership had a role in players walking too. Smith did draft several good players. Smith knows the business and can scout players. This is a good move by the front office.
