On a side note, I don't buy that whole 3-4 year thing. The average is that low because of the vast amount of players who arent good enough to play for more than a season or two. I dont view these guys professional football players, they will not make a living off the NFL. Anyone who is any good (worth picking up in FA) plays significantly longer
To an extent sure. But think of how everyone is saying a RB hits 30 and is basically done. You get him around 27-28 and he's going to go for somewhere likely that offers 4-5 years top dollar, so you can end up with 3 years where you're not getting much from him potentially, then you release him and take the hit on the signing bonus.

What's the reasoning for this?

I don't know for sure Dirtbag, but I would think it would be because it puts a restriction on salaries. We lose guys because of the cap. We can't afford to pay them but so much under the cap without having to cut other players or lose them because we can't match the offers from other teams with a cap in place.

They don't do that because on the whole, the absence of a cap has driven player salaries up at a faster rate than would have otherwise been the case.

baseballs working on that. i think the league even set a cap floor to force teams like the marlins to spend more on payroll b/c the marlins owners made a profit by paying his players nothing (30 mil) while receiving (70 mil) in shared revenue.

so before the marlins ever sell a ticket or hot dog, they have already profited thanks to teams like the yankees.

i think samuels is due for an evaluation in feb where he said he will know for sure whether he will retire or not. man, i hope he gets good news and can play.

With the current salary cap in the NFL there too is a league min that each team must meet. I believe its something like 70% or 80% of the cap limit.

Also, as for Sauels I agree with you I hope that he can play, but as the team moves forward they need to keep in the back of their mind that Samuels isn't getting any younger...

Come March 5th, or once the cap is dead, there will be a flurry of retirements/cuts, Chris should be one of the retirees. He was/is awesome, and should go into the Redskins Ring as soon as possible, but our team needs to move forward now.

why would he come back? Neck injuries are no joke and he should take that seriously plus he has a fat check coming his way from re-negotiating his contract. He's had a great career and he'll be missed.

Redskins’ Chris Samuels to Decide Future in February

this isnt the article i reaad, the one i read was much more in-depth about his re-evaluation in feb. but it hits the gist.

samuels retiring looks more likely than not, but there is still a chance he will come back. im torn. i really really want him to come back and if he and the doctors decide he can then im with it . .. but im scared as hell for him if he does.

Re: How will chris samuels's retirement affect our cap?

Here is a good analysis of the upcoming uncapped year by J I Halsell, especially in regards to the expectation of a new CBA. He talks about the possibility of there being some charge against the 2011 cap (which he believes will be in the next CBA) for 2010 uncapped moves.
It is all speculation, but he certainly has the knowledge and background to make credible statements:

Uncapped Bonanza For Redskins Unlikely, Says Expert
