Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

Can't not sign big dogs because of past bad choices with big dogs. But you also can't force a big dog onto the roster. Has to be within the budget, within the team you're trying to build, at a position of need, etc. We shouldn't let anything from the past dictate the future.

But you also don't get every guy you want anyways. Seems like the Skins went all in for Cooper and didn't get him. Sometimes it happens.

What other team has won 6 Super Bowls with that model? The Patriots. Now we are far from being the Pats, but what I’m saying is his approach is refreshing from the stand point that we aren’t going to be a winner over night. He’s doing it the slow and methodical way. The build through the draft, get the right fit guys kind of way.

I will take 5 free agencies in a row like this bc I think we’ve been doing it wrong for years. And I think it’s laughable that so many Skins fans who cry wolf at our antics for years are now chastising Rivera for not making splash moves.
+1
The only niggle I have is that we don't appear to have gone after many other bigger names in areas of need, like Lb and DB. I say appear because RR has played his cards pretty well and we're not fully aware of ALL the negotiations that have been/are taking place. He's either been smart enough not to reveal too much about who we have gone after/what we offered or he's hiding the fact we haven't really gone after bigger names aside from Hooper and Cooper. I trust that it's the former more than the latter, but I agree he's only going after guys that fit his template and he and Kyle will continue that in the draft.

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

Five free agencies in a row that do not add much starting talent is not the way to build a championship team. It is nice to look for "character'. But some talent would also be appreciated and, particularly on offense, we have not added any real talent during the UFA period. So no, I would not like to see five years of UFA periods with no addition of talent on the offensive side of the ball. The current offensive line is horrendous. Skins could easily have afforded a two year deal to Jason Peters, who is a high character guy by the way, rather than the duel of backups that currently fill the LT position. And I am sure that all of you who are so satisfied with what RR has not done on offense that you will be blaming Haskins for his inability to throw TD passes from the seat of his pants which is where he will be quite a bit this year.

There should be a middle ground between what Bruce Allen chasing "names" did and what RR is doing now, avoiding adding talent.

Your posts are like a broken record. Let me see if I understand you. You don't like the way RR has handled Free Agency. Is that it?

Big names don't always equate to quality moves.

I soured on Cooper when we played the Raiders a few years ago at home. He came off as a little bit soft.

Maybe I sound like a broken record. But nobody has shown me where RR has done anything significant to improve the offense.

He hasn't that's why... But we still have the draft

The change of coaching is the significant change to the offense. We saw what happened once Gruden and Callahan were told to butt out of signal calling.

I think it is entirely possible that Rivera feels that the offense will be competent enough under Scott Turner that he wants to bring in young talent from the draft. In fact, I think this whole off-season is as much a condemnation of the previous coaching staff, as it is a reflection of Rivera's desire to get a feeling about the players on the field this year. I do think he takes into account Kyle's evaluations, but at 3-13, every player on the field has to prove it to RR on the field.

I think that's true for both sides of the team. Even Del Rio said that our defense players sometimes looked confused on the field.. Coaches can make or break players - just look at Adam Gase and his old players (i.e., Kenyan Drake and DeVante Parker). Even if it means a losing season, I'm fine with Riviera wanting to see what our current players can do before we make any drastic change to the roster.

Y’all got me fired up. Dude has been here for like 30 seconds. Y’all need to chill. The man hasn’t snapped up every big name guy that draft pundants and fans think he should have so he’s done nothing. This is EXACTLY why the Cleveland Browns are perennial losers. They had Belicheck and fired him because they were too damn impatient to wait and let the man work. And he went on to the Pats and established one of the longest running dynasties in football. I’m not saying we are about to do that, but it’s important to note nonetheless.

Rome was not built in a day. The man clearly has a plan and a vision and just because he didn’t sign someone because A) The player didn’t want to be here (ie Cooper and Hooper) or B) he didn’t want them because their physical traits and mental toughness don’t match with his vision and plan, doesn’t mean he hasn’t done nothing.

If anything he’s SMART for not wasting money on top tier guys that won’t be a good fit and won’t produce for us. And then we have a ton of dead cap money when we cut high contract underperforming players and everyone is complaining how we suck, like every other year of the past decade and a half.

WAKE UP! ; -)
