Brooks was a priority udfa signing and I love to see it

The defense will likely need to carry this team for at least the 1st half of the season. Howell needs to get some snaps under his belt. Dude only started 1 game last year. I believe in him, but hopefully he gets a full season to show what he has.

I wonder if Barton - Hudson combo at LB over Davis.

I agree with this.

Rookie qb's that can come in day 1 and not make dumb rookie mistakes are rare.

Howell is basically a redshirt qb - he was 3rd string except for 1 game last year.

Most likely he'll miss 1 game.
I think Barton is a more complete LB than Hudson, but I do think Hudson will be our most athletic LB and make some plays. It's just incredible to me that we have to rely on an hybrid lb-db player, when we are already putting 5 DBs on the field most of the time. Very good running teams and physical pass catching TEs may very well be difficult to defend for us...

Very good running teams and physical pass catching TEs are difficult for every team to defend.

For me though, the LB talk has run its course. It's not a position that these coaches value, and it has been that way since they took over. Despite that, they have been top 10 in points allowed in 2 of the 3 seasons. It will likely be 3/4 after this year, even with Jamin Davis speeding all over the DMV.

You can stat it down all you want, and nobody is saying our defense has been the issue of this team, but don't tell me it has not been excruciating at times these past two years to see our excellent defense get shredded down the middle with the likes of David Mayo, Bostic and Thomas Davis sprinting in slowmo behind opposing RBs or having no clue a TE was making the catch behind them...
Is this defense gonna be very good again this season? For sure.
Could it have been better and less subject to derailment by injuries with a couple of cheap additions? I think it's hard to argue.

I bet Jamin Davis is terrible at Mario Cart. Only goes for the mushrooms.

Sprinting in slowmo. Lol. Very accurate description of our LB group for quite a long time.

And the 1 linebacker we have that can run fast, can't stop driving like an asshole. He plays slow and drives fast.

Rivera is definitely going to get fired. Probably already decided. With a caveat, if we win 10+ games, the ownership group may revesit.

Haha well played. Maybe that's the better mindset.
I just don't see the benefit in leaving as it is an easy to fix Achilles' heel...

It's not like I don't want them to, or don't think they should, upgrade the LB group. I was hoping they would figure out a way to lure T Edmonds here...

But, if they can be a top 10 (maybe even top 5) defense this year with the likes of Barton, Hudson, and Davis...I'm good with that.

It is a little weird though, with both Ron and Jack being former LBs...

From the outside looking in, it's the QB, O-line, and LB groups that I am most questioning. All other areas look real solid - on paper. A weak LB group (if that's what we have) can be somewhat "covered for" with an elite defensive front and a really good secondary. However, if the QB and/or O-line is weak, the offense is in trouble.

Really can't wait until they start going against the Ravens in practices, and other teams in preseason so we can get a better sense of what we have.

Saahdiq Charles sidelined with calf injury (we should move on) and a lot of talking heads praising Cody Barton play early on at LB.
