16 years is the big question. If he last that long, the stats will be there. Lavar is beating his body up by going for a knock out, instead of wrapping up on his tackles. He's young now, but his body won't be able to handle the abuse if he doesn't wise up and stop trying to make the highlight reel. Wasn't it Bruce Smith that talked to Lavar about beating up his body? I know there are a lot on this board that don't care for Bruce, but give the guy credit for his longevity.

I agree that if Lavar doesnt tone it down a bit his longevity may suffer.However, while he is still young I say let her rip until people really start to fear you.Once that happens then you can chill out and let the fear work its magic on opposing players.As for being as good as Monte Coleman he definetly is on the right path.All he needs now is a little bit of continuity from year to year to put him over the top.

Once Lavar gets a consistent defense his stats will go up, and in turn he will gradually mature and become a smarter player. Most young players that are as gifted athletically as him try to compensate for brains with braun, he'll learn to use both soon, we hope.

Monte Coleman was a coach's dream. You gave him an assignment; you taught him the physical skills it took to carry out that assignment; he worked his ass off to master the skills; he focused on his assignment; he carried out his assignment.

If anyone believes that this is the description of LaVar Arrington thusfar in his football career, you are living in a delusion. LaVar is a gifted athlete that has yet to show that he takes direction or plays with focus and discipline.

Arrington has the tools to be much better than Coleman was. Will he achieve that level? The jury is out!

BTW, do the young members here realize that Monte Coleman was tried at punt returner one training camp for about 4 or 5 weeks?

I dont see Lavar being around for 16 years, not the way free agency works these days. He has said he wants to be a Skin for life, but we'll see when it comes time for him to take a pay cut. Its not that he needs another dollar to his name, but 'its business' as so many players say these days. I really wish players didnt conisder it a business as much as they do. All of them make enough money, its just an ego contest to say who can make the most. An extra two million on a 50 million dollar deal seems hardly worth moving to a different city, having to learn a new system, losing fan support, and possibly ruining a legacy .

While I like Arrington and think he's a fun guy, I'm also in the "Arrington is overrated" camp. He should focus on keeping up with Marcus Washington for starters.

Coleman was what, an 11th round pick? That means now he would be an undrafted FA. Arrington was picked #2. It's hard to compare them from that perspective. Monte was a nobody who worked his ass off to become a great player, whereas LaVar has the natural talent, so he doesn't have to work as hard to acheive a similar level. If he did work just as hard, he would be phonomenal (as much as I can't stand him, that seems to be what elevates Ray Lewis above the rest). Maybe Gibbs and Williams can inspire LaVar to do that. If so, yes, he will be better. If not, he still has the ability to be just as good...just maybe not for as long...

To say that Arrington was just born 6'-3" and 250 lbs. and did not work hard to get to where he is...is crazy. He spent many years in the weight room, running and film room study to get to where he is. Athletic talent has to be developed as well as having good genes.
No disrespect intended, but some of you (especialy Jasonskin (21) who started this topic) were to young to remember that Monte's career did not start all to well. He was mostly a career back up and special teams player. When Monte did get to start he was injury prone early in his career, especially with a re-occurring hamstring injury that would come and go for a few seasons.
Monte as much as I love him and is one of my favorite Redskins of all time, he was a one demensional LB, strong against the pass and pass rushing, but was not so strong being consistent vs. the run. That is why Gibbs made him a third down LB and platooned him with Mel Kaufman and Rich Milot who were stronger against the run.

Look, here's what was great about Monty: he was a true REDSKIN who would work hard on every down and do whatever the team asked. He was with us for 16 years for that reason, not because of his skills. If just a little of that could rub off on Lavar, he will be one of the greats with his talent. Let's hope that this is the gift that Joe Gibbs brings to Lavar Arrington.

(especialy jasonskin (21) what is that all about just because i am 21 i don't no what Montes career was.My dad is a big skin fan and he has been recording redskins gamse the last 35 years or so we got tape on alot of players.
