I believe Mike Mularkey is also interviewing for the Broncos job, not sure I heard it right though

It's like a soap opera in Cincy. Marvin Lewis Re-signs his contract, he stays.

Re: NFL Coaching Rumors and Moves

I would be very leery of any coach, regardless of his credentials, who has been out of coaching more than a year. The game just changes so fast and the culture seems to be constantly evolving. It was pretty evident that even Shanahan, at times, had challenges adjusting during games and handling multiple personalities.

If I'm the owner of a team in need of a head coach, I'm staying away from Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher. They've acclimated to studio life and being TV personalities, I just think it would take some time for them to start working 16 hour days and juggling an NFL roster.

Depends on what you do with your time away. Shanahan closely studied the game, I doubt his year away had any impact, more than anything it probably helped him recharge his batteries.

Cowher and Gruden are still closely involved with the league, they watch film and study teams & players, I wouldn't worry too much about hiring them myself.

I'm sure they study film, but so what. It's not the same as studying and knowing what's going around the league and preparing a team week in and week out. I'm not saying they would be utter failures or anything, but what NFL coach has returned from a layoff and taken a team on a Super Bowl run or deep into the playoffs.

Sure if you want a marquee name to fill the seats and win a few games here and there, no problem. But I think the best minds in football are the ones that are active. Cower and Gruden have been out like three seasons now, right?

No wonder Shanahan changes his story every five minutes - he has multiple personality disorder! I thought he was just a liar.

Is that why it looks like he has one eye looking one way and the other eye another? I wondered how he did that.

Could you imagine an on-field conversation between Cowher and Shanahan.

Shanahan: "Stop spitting on me!"
Cowher:"who are you talking to...me or the guy next to me?"
Shanahan: 'Get the gap between your front teeth fixed!"
Cowher: "Get a real tan."

It's not?

I'd bet they know more about the league as a whole than most active coaches, who are more focused on their weekly opponents than what's going on league wide.

Point is they're not far removed from the game and understanding what's the newest flavor as far as schemes or philosophies. A couple of years removed, not a huge deal. 10 years away like Gibbs, Vermeil, etc., and there's going to be a learning curve coming back.

Retreads don't always replicate their past success simply because it's just that hard to win in this league consistently, and a variety of other factors.

Not joking at all.

He's a good fit there, who else has been able to win anything there since the 80s?

Before he came along, the Bengals hadn't had a winning season since 1990. His first two seasons he had them at .500 and by year 3 they were 11-5 in the playoffs.
