Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue

Just add a new definition in the dictionary for the football team that plays in DC. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term, and it's been that way for a very long time.

Language and words evolve over time. Nobody is using Redskins in a derogatory way anymore.

Sunny, there isn't anybody out there using the word Redskin to refer to Native American as a slur anymore. I don't doubt that at some point in history, it was a slur. But unlike certain slurs that are still used today, nobody is using Redskin as one. You say Redskin and the first thing that comes to mind is DC football. And I still believe it's a vocal minority of Native Americans that oppose the name, and the rest either don't care and there's def. another minority that use it as a term of pride. They're probably not as vocal about it because of the many issues plaguing the Native American community today that need attention more though.

But the bottom line here isn't how Native Americans feel, whether in support or opposition to the name. Like anything else, it's the almighty dollar. If the Redskins biggest corporate sponsors put pressure on Dan to change the name, and anywhere he tries to go to build a new stadium tells him he will only get tax dollars to help build it if he changes the name, then at some point the name is going to change. Fucking with a rich man's money is the only way you're going to get their attention.

And no one says "good morning whitey" or "how can I help you cracker." Jeeze people get a grip. No one greets people in that manner.

If that is the case then why isn't " the mob" going after the Blackhawks? What about the Chiefs? No one says.. "good morning Blackjawk"..

Really hope we don't change the name. Snyder can get other sponsors. The media pressure will die down like it always does.

Those are not derogatory names. It isn’t like Native Americans just do not want to be associated with sports. Lol. Clearly there is a difference between Redskin and Chief. It is like N word vs zulu warrior.

Yes, there is. "Chief" is a term that is actually used in a derogatory way by racists. "Redskin," not so much. I am 66 years old and have never heard anyone use the term 'redskin" as a racial slur. Not once. Chief? Yes, I've heard that used as a racial slur.

There actually are some groups that have an issue with the Blackhawks logo, but not necessarily the name. Yes, the team was named after the squad the original owner was a member of in WWI. Yes, the squad was named after a Native American Chief whose name was "Black Hawk". However, the logo for the military squad is not an image of Chief Black Hawk. IIRC, the Blackhawks (hockey team) original logo was a sketch of Chief Black Hawk. Difference with them, is they can simply change the logo to literally a black hawk as in black in color bird of prey. Which, in time, I think will happen. The Indians have retired Chief Wahoo. Would not be surprised if the Braves are next. They may keep the name, but the tomahawk will eventually be gone.

Not sure I agree about getting other sponsors. If Fed Ex pulls their name, they are going to have a hard time finding a corporation with the money to buy the naming rights.

Fuck these pc assholes!! If the Redskins change their name I say call them either “The Nation” representing all Native American Nations and keep the logo or the Washington Americans since the NA are the real Americans here, plus the Cowboys won’t be using America’s team.

I honestly don't care if the team changes names, there are bigger issues going on in the world/in my life to care about this. I just hope that the people who are very adamant about changing the name are as adamant about supporting Native American communities, which are suffering in this pandemic.

No, because it's not 100 years ago and I, along with literally everybody else, is not prejudiced against Native Americans.

Go find me any group of people anywhere who are still actively encouraging slaughter against Native Americans and maybe I'll reconsider.

Yep. And from what most NAs have said they're often called "chief" as a pejorative term.
