According to local reports Gibbs encouraged Snyder to come down to Carolina and talk to Ron

I love Coach Joe and thank him immensely for the success he had first time around and the respectability he had 2nd time around but this is 100% the wrong take. His 2nd time around he thought he could skip the whole "develop a young qb" thing by getting Brunell and that was one of his big downfalls. The game passed him by - offensive rules were getting made emphasizing pass interference/big plays/more scoring and the great teams of those days realized where the advantage was.

The NFL has been tilting the rules in favor of the offense for the last 20 years or so and Coach Joe thought he could still win with a veteran qb game manager and a strong running game. Those days are gone. Ball control will win games when you're playing quick-score offenses (good defense and strong running game will hold them in check) but it's not an effective strategy for winning 12 games and a title. The best teams have solid defenses and aggressive offenses that air it out (which is what the NFL wants).

Yes, but knowing the best coordinators and gm's is different. If JG was giving advice on the character of guys, I would trust him implicitly, but knowing the best FO hires and innovative HC guys, not as much.

I am glad he is talking with JG, because I believe JG truly wants this franchise to thrive. But I hope he is getting advice from guys like the analytics dude he brought in.

Exactly! I'm one who normally agrees with Chief. I don't know if I'd consult with Gibbs nowadays. Gibbs might be promoting or pushing for Belichek for all we know.

It never hurts to consult but I'd have issues if Gibbs was leading the search for the next GM. He's an old-school type in a new-school game.

If Gibbs knew anything about Peters, Horvitz or Aponte I would be shocked

Re: 2024 Commanders Off-Season Thread

I didn't think that we could find a way to be WORSE with Dan Snyder finally gone, but somehow Ron Rivera and this squad managed to do it.

Losing 8 straight games, is that a franchise worst, or near a franchise worst?

On a side note, to piggyback on what other posters have said, I have an issue with Joe Gibbs being involved in picking the new HC. I don't want to sound disrespectful to the legend, but he needs to sit this one out. Gibbs was real high on Ron Rivera and everybody saw how that worked out. The man is a legend and beloved by all Washington fans, but I think he should not be involved in the search for a HC or GM..

  2. Aka the number of wins we had in 2 games to start the season. Coincidentally, also the number of wins we recorded in the following 15 games.
  3. Ron's faith in Jack Del Rio. Ultimately what sank the ship this year.
  4. First round draft picks on the d-line to start the year. Bought high and sold low. It's the Commies way.
  5. Terry Mac - I can't believe it took Sam Howell 16 games and 59 minutes to get you to the 1k mark for the year. I still believe in you though. Let's see what the next qb can do because Howell needs another 2-3 years on the bench before I want to see him in a game again.
  6. Sam Cosmi - the only starter on the o-line worth retaining. I loved seeing him shutdown Parsons to start the game.
Ron was just another doomed coach and the last failure of the Snyder regime. Today, the Snyder Era finally ends.

Takes guts to stand out on that limb SS.

Seriously I think we're all in agreement on that. I'm not worried about it though, look at Harris' track record with the 76ers and the Devils.

Snyder era finally ends if we get rid of the dumb name. That's the last link. Problem is we have 99 other problems that take priority first.

Joe was given Vinny Cerrato as his GM and roster, not a good thing.

Excellent point, but Cerrato wasn't coaching the team on gameday either. I would argue Snyder gave Gibbs final say over the roster too given his credibility.
