What to do with the cap space?

According to the cap sheet, we are now 7.8 mil under the cap. Once Lloyd is cut, it will be 10.6 mil under the cap since he is a designated Jun 1 cut. (that includes the .4mil that will replace Lloyds contract which is attributed to the rule of 51) That means that we will have 2 players to sign with 10.6 mil to do it. Our rookie contracts shouldnt be that much since we have late picks. Im guessing that we will have about 9.3 mil in space once we have all 53 players counting towards the cap (including the rookie contracts).

I have three questions about our situation. 1. Would it be realistic or even possible for us to push money forward if we dont sign people (which doesn't seem likely now that Hackett is out of the picture). 2. Can we not have Lloyd be a June 1st cut after we already designated him one so we can take the full hit this year? 3. What are we going to do if we cant fill up this cap space? Why would we push so much money back and not do anything to fill the space?

Re: What to do with the cap space?

yeah, you can take unused space and assign it as bonus money by redoing contracts right at the end of the year to buy down next years cap.

i don't think that's really intended, but danny did it to portis (i think) for about 1.7mill before the last nfl financial year ended.

Re: What to do with the cap space?

Here's an idea, we don't do anything with it. We wait and see if a player comes along for the right price, and if he doesn't then oh well, ain't no biggie. Just because we have this cap space doesn't mean we automatically have to use it. We could save up for the draft picks, that's another idea. Because when you think about it, having 8 million in cap space isn't really that much compared to what other teams have. It's not like we have 40 million in cap space just sitting around waiting to be used.

can you take the money, and front load a contract? that way anyone that needs extended gets their money up front, and the majority counts against this year

I gree with both mooby and dmek, ket's either leave it alone for once or use it to set up a front loaded contract in which the player actually costs us less down the road when thier production declines anyway instead of more.

#1 continue to re-sign our own guys

#2 use it to sign our draft picks

#3 save space for a possible June 1 cut

That, my friend, seems like the most logical idea.

beat me to it, especially #1

I said in another thread that I think the restructures this year are to gear up to Re-sign JC to a long-term deal. I don't mean this year, but by mid season if he continues to improve, talks w/his agent need to start.

I see JC having a solid year & getting a nice, but not huge, long term contract w/25mil + in bonuses. This will go down as one of Gibbs' greatest moves for the franchise.

In addition to JC, I see potential deals for MOntgomery, Blades, Rocky if he can stay healthy this year, and maybe Doughty.

Re: What to do with the cap space?

Here's what I think.
I think Cerrato wanted 5-6 Mil cushion going into the draft in case there is some trade potential...that explains why they wouldn't offer Hacket 2 Mil.

If no trade occurs, they can use that, as many have suggested, to extend Campbell or other core draft picks nearing the end of their contracts.

Regarding siging June 1 cuts....there wont be any due to the new rules that allow you to designate early cuts as June 1. Free agency is essentially over outside of 3rd stringers.

The problem with front loading a deal comes when a player, three years down the road, realizes all the big money in his deal is behind him, and then clamors (hard) for a new deal, by skipping OTA's and being a crabby person in the locker room.

I would avoid front loading a deal.

Well said. It nice to feel better about the cap by the day for a change.

So far so good. I don't think anyone thought the Skins would be so quiet so far. Seems like they are headed in the right direction.
