The changes to the playing surface aren't minor, either. In the past, Washington's grounds crew would strip off two inches and replace the sod to put together a turf they could play on.

Now, they're taking out 14 inches of subsoil, all the way down to the heat lines. Then, they're going to rebuild the entire surface all the way up, with a new drainage system, new irrigation system and brand new USGA spec sand.

The changing of the sand is a major deal, too. According to Benevento, roughly 2,000 tons --- yes, you read that right -- are coming in, with more than 2,000 tons of the old sand being removed. The new sand is softer sand with bigger particle size; the old sand was more firm and beginning to break down.

After that comes the actual grass, which has been grown in Charlotte, North Carolina, and made especially for FedExField.

"It's going to make a huge difference for our players, our coaching staff and the fans," Benevento said. "Players are going to feel a lot more confident out here running around. Coaches are going to understand what they're coming into every day."

Head coach Ron Rivera has played a major role in getting the process rolling. Not only is the surface at FedExField being changed, but the team's practice fields at the Ashburn facility have been upgraded this offseason, too.

"He was a big advocate for us, here and at the park," Benevento said. "He was a huge voice for the grounds crew and the fields themselves. He's been in our corner the entire step of the way."

The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a better playing surface for the players, something Benevento thinks will be accomplished once the process is concluded.

"I'm excited for our players to play on a field they know is perfect every time they come out here," Benevento said.

Yes .... its "winning off the field" but Ron has done a lot. He had to build and fill out an entire organizational chart, FO, scouting dept. Got Snyder to pay for upgrading the field and facilities.

We were the cheapest worst run organization before Ron.

There was so much work to be done and I think we need to be thankful Ron even agreed to come here and deal with this shit.

This year is disappointing but the man has done a lot of good already.

No head coach can come here and win with the way our barebones scouting, FO and facilities were prior to Ron coming here.

I'm not sure RR is the solution beyond next season, but is it maybe that we've become so fed up with losing around here, we're not prepared to give ANYONE more than 2 seasons to fix things?

I agree that he has done good things but at he end of the day we can talk talk talk but if the team is losing on Sunday's nothing else matters. Fans don't give a shit about turf at the stadium (no offense to you) , we care about rooting for a team that you can be proud of.. That isn't the case and hasn't been for years so yeah we are all down and out and tired of it. Hard to have faith in Ron right now.

Stop gap for who?

We already out kicked our coverage just getting Ron in the first place.

Nobody higher profile than Ron is coming to take this job.

We need to hire a random young buck that no one has really heard of yet and hope it works out. Rivera gets thru next year, but if we are still shit on the field, we need to go with a young guy. No more old ass retreads.

It's going to have to be a young no name guy regardless. Unless Ron can turn this around by 2022.. Right now with no QB, I don't see it happening

lol we just went down the road of a new "young" guy, Jay Gruden, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat.

I'm frustrated AF right now but the fact is Rivera needs a full 3 years to know if this is heading in the right direction or not. And he needs a QB. This talk of moving on from him already is ridiculous.

Draft a QB with every pick next year lol. Keep the best 2 and Allen/Heinicke can compete to be the veteran 3rd QB.

I never believed this because money talks but this year, you're right.
Snyder is the GM and will personally leak stories to make you look back if things don't work out.

Good guy Rivera isn't leaving this organization clean.

I actually think it's really possible RR has decided to tank. We know he considered it last year before the rest of the division was God awful too.

Why keep keep Allen and TH around? Save the spot for the next Frerotte or Cousins.

I did say that no one has heard of yet. We all knew who he was. Also, if you are a relative of someone famous that already coached, you are a retread. Turner is one too.

I agree he needs 3 years. But for 24 hours, once a week, I want his ass fired lol.

Yeah, that's fine too. 3 rookie royal rumble for who starts week 1 2022.

Re: Do you think Rivera will successfully rebuild ?

Folks, it doesn't matter. We've already done the high profile retreads (Gibbs, Shanahan), the college coach (Spurrier), the out of left field shot in the dark (Zorn), the up and coming coordinator (Gruden). We've done it all.
