There are better available options at LB. Ones that allow you to play your base defense. Which we can't for now.

So what is the "base" defense?

I think that bringing back Collins is the right move.

In the first four weeks of last season, he played about 30% of his snaps at deep safety and blitzed an average of once per game. He allowed a passer rating of 118.8, along with four TDs.

In the eight games after that, he recorded an interception, two sacks, and 10 stops (PFF). That is enough to grade him as the NFL's best run defender among safeties during that span.

Is there a better option on the team, or in FA?

Yes it does. Robinson feels like the every down back that we haven't had in awhile either. Would love to see what Gibson can do as more of a 3rd down back and split him wide some. McKissic is no joke either at all. Weapons everywhere. No excuses. Huge signing.

Let's hope the O line stays healthy. Flowers is still out there, BTW. I guess with some of our FA signings, they're not likely to go in that direction, but he played quite well for us.

The 4-3 is our base defense. I know we play a lot of nickel and dime. But we still do play a significant part of snaps in 4-3. And for now we just don't have the roster for that. That is an issue.

As for Collins I think the bolded part says it all. "best run defenders among safeties"... but he wasn't a safety ! He was a glorified LB ! And while he was really good against the run at times, he still missed some guys, took some bad angles at times and wasn't good enough defending the pass. Grading him amongst safeties to sign him as a LB is flawed.

I'm not saying we couldn't use him. I'm saying look at our depth chart.
DB: Fuller, WJ3, St Juste, Curl, McCain, Darrick Forrest, Danny Johnson, Reaves etc...
LB: Holcomb, Davis, Hudson (hybrid) and then bellow average JAGS... We have 2.5 starting LBs.

Put aside the fact Collins played for us last year and tell me who we need more: a former safety that played better when put in a LB position, or a proven MLB with a LB body and skills ala Schobert, Hightower, Minter, Kwon Alexander, Ogletree etc... ?
I was a big fan of the Collins signing, but his progress after the switch to LB is overblown IMO. The Collins experience failed.

I thought we were in a 5-2 more often than anything, but I may be mistaken.

A proven MLB is the answer. However, this regime seems to really believe Holcomb is the answer at MLB, so I don't know that that's going to happen.

Maybe one of those JAGS will surprise...who knows. I'd still bring Collins back for the right $$ though if they don't plan to sign a true Veteran LB, and if they don't have faith in anyone from the JAG pool. It would be better than not addressing the position at all.

Oh for sure ! Collins over nothing at the position all day ! But a proven LB over Collins all year !

As for the percentage of snaps, maybe we do play more 5-2 than 4-3 I don't remember precisely. My point is even if we only play 30% of snaps in 4-3... We can't even play it properly for now.

The problem is if Holcomb or Davis have to miss any games, there is no one else on the roster that should be playing anywhere near starter snaps.

Still hope they can bring in 1 more guy. We need some depth.

Totally agree. It's bewildering that they haven't tried to address the LB position. I honestly don't get it.

We desperately need to bring in a LB for depth.

Re: McLaurin is signing a 3-year extension worth up to $71 million

I'm a little concerned about how slow Ron and Jack are to react to challenges. Last year it took them way too long to realize they needed to force Landon Collins down into the box. By the time they finally made the change our secondary had already been torched game after game.

I'm concerned they're taking the same approach with assessing their LB depth and with assessing the capabilities of the '11th defender'. I'd be very hesitant to count on Percy Butler or Ben St. Juste as the 11th man. They're promising sure. But I wouldn't go forward without a contingency plan. It doesn't make sense to go into training camp without enough depth there to consider yourself covered in the event we need it.

Quote from Terry - can we clone this guy, please? Easily my favorite player.

“From the day I was drafted, I’ve had the singular goal to win a Super Bowl with this franchise,” McLaurin’s statement reads in part. This is on my mind every day when I walk into the building. While I am both humbled and ecstatic about this contract, it motivates me to work even harder. I understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with signing this extension. To whom much is given, much is required. There is no other place I would rather be or fan base I would want to represent.”

Wow. Impossible not to love and root for this guy. He really does embody everything about the way a NFL player should be. Thankful he's a Commander!

Getting this deal done made too much sense for both sides. I wasn't going to start sweating it unless we got to training camp with no deal. Terry is a true pro, all class. Can't wait to see what this WR group can do this year.
