Re: Jim Tressel Resigns

Lol, SMU part Deux.

Quote:
1. Urban Meyer: This is the grand slam hire for Ohio State, given Meyer's pedigree, track record and age. Meyer grew up in Ohio, graduated from the University of Cincinnati and was a graduate assistant for the Buckeyes in 1986-87. He stepped down at Florida after the 2010 season and is spending more time with his family and doing TV for ESPN. In the book Meyer wrote in 2008, he said that Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan were the only coaching jobs his wife had no power to veto.

Absolute disgrace. All he had to do was the right thing, and he instead chose to try to cover it up. Great, great coach, really ashame.

If Urban Meyer goes there I would be really unhappy. Especially with the reasons he gave for leaving Florida.

Well it's not like Florida is really to hurt by Meyer leaving. They still have Florida recruits as well as both an elite offensive (Weiss) and defensive mind (Muschamp). I mean can you imagine Notre Dame under Weiss with Florida kids and an actual defense? They would have been National Champs. I mean I know Muschamp is the HC but Weiss is an absolute steal as an offensive coordinator. Of course I grit my teeth when I hear people doubting Weiss's ability to gameplan for SEC defenses, because you know, they're more complicated then NFL Defenses

Sports Illustrated investigation on Jim Tressel, Ohio State - SI.com - Magazine

wow, interesting stuff.

And it looks like ole TP hopefully might have taken his last snap too at OSU:

Report: NCAA launches separate probe of Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor - ESPN

Re: Jim Tressel Resigns

Good, I hate OSU. Maybe this will shut their fans up for a few years. They've become like the Boston Red Sox fans of college football.

I used to have respect for Tressel. He did and said the right things but he's no Tony Dungee aparently...this problem was more widespread than we ever thought.

Pryor won't have to come back now and I doubt he will. Tressel made his suspended players promise to come back after their 5 games as part of their "plea deal" to play in the bowl game last year...to delay their punishment so the university still had a shot at winning and getting paid. That struck a bad cord with me then and I was never a huge fan of Pryor, but now it seems his whole team was out of control. Where was the AD's oversight in all of this? Nowhere. I guess Tressel had a big enough presence to get a free, unmonitored pass at running the show. Bad idea with anyone.

Next years class, always better

Still we can get him in the supplemental draft for a late round pick. I personally think he's a better pro prospect then Newton as Newton only had one year starting and put up his numbers in a spread offense. Pryor put up 27 TD's 11 Int's and a 65% completion rate in a pro style offense. Mobile, strong armed, and now possibly accurate.

Of course fringe members of a certain site are suggesting that Pryor play WR or CB in the NFL (Passive Aggressive FTW)

I'm not going to jump up for joy, dealing with my own alma mater's sanctions. I'll just say this... the NCAA is a sham and the players need to be paid.

Re: Jim Tressel Resigns

I love the logic some Ohio State fans give. Remember the old line Mom would always give you?

You: "But Mom, everyone is doing it!"
Mom: "So if everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?"

Just because others do it doesn't make it alright or correct.

To me the bigger deal is that this isn't the first time Tressel has been involved in some shady stuff. He had similar issues at Youngstown State. All indications are he's a great guy and players love playing for him. But he's on some Calipari-like level with these repeated violations at multiple schools

Hate it as I thought JT seemed to be a great nice and religious guy. But then again, as a spiritual person myself, I tend to make a lot of mistakes.
Hopefully he will land on his feet and learn from this.

I'm no OSU fan, but I stand by my original assertion. If the "rules" are so out of whack with the reality of the situation, assume that every major football school in D1 (except possibly ND, BYU and Stanford) is jumping off that bridge because the situation is wrong... not the bridge jumpers.

From the coach's perspective, if you're not jumping off the bridge, the other 10 or 11 schools in your conference are. And alumni and fans only care about the wins- you start getting behind everyone else b/c you're playing by the NCAA's farcical rules, the bottom line will get you ousted.

People only care about the method to success when they get caught. The lesson? Don't get caught.

Sounds like a great fit for the Cincinnati Bengals.
