The huge cap penalty the League imposed, at Mara's urging, probably had a lot to do with not being able to pay him competitively and keep him here.

We still had stars but those mid level guys, the ones McLovin refers to as red chips with an up arrow, are the ones we became thin on during those years.

Yep, he was cut do to that, but they could have brought him back after Cards cut him.
