Maybe this (from Wiki)
Quote:
The Ilizarov apparatus is a type of external fixation used in orthopedic surgery to lengthen or reshape limb bones; as a limb-sparing technique to treat complex and/or open bone fractures; and in cases of infected nonunions of bones that are not amenable with other techniques. It is named after the orthopedic surgeon Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov from the Soviet Union, who pioneered the technique.

Doesn't show it with a cast also, but maybe some form of it?

I forget who tweeted it at the time that Alex first got out of the hospital, but I believe he said that Alex tentatively has a few more operations that he will need before they will for sure know if he will be able to attempt a comeback or not. I'll ask my buddy who told me about it, and see if I can find the link.

On a side note, I used to work with a guy who had a metal frame cast just like this. He had broke his leg in an industrial accident. He ended up having close to half a dozen operations even after he got this thing, and while his leg looks good today all things considered, he is unable to do anything else other than a brisk walk - running / jumping is out of the question. He does walk with a slight limp, but it's hardly noticeable.

Yeah I don't see Smith playing again. That Doctor Quote pretty much sums it up. I would imagine he will retire.

Re: Alex Smith released from hospital

Wondered why we haven't heard from him but I guess we'll see when the new league year comes.

Re: Alex Smith released from hospital

Best wishes to Alex.

I really hope the team doesn't say an F'n word to try to shame him out of his money.

I would be pleasantly surprised if there were no leaks or a McLovin-like media campaign against paying him fully his due.

Re: Alex Smith released from hospital

This picture makes me go 100% QB in the first round now. Unless we get Nick Foles to come
