Ex Cardinal DB died in combat

Pat Tillman, who gave up a lucrative NFL contract with the Phoenix Cardinals to join the Army Rangers, has been killed in Afghanistan, a report says.

In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Tillman decided to turn down a three-year, $3.6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army.

This is really too bad. I rembember when he rejected the Cards contract to serrve. My heart goes out to his family and the other families in the military.
Also a BIG thank you to those who serve out country.

I'm sure he would'nt have wanted all the attention this is going to get, but it was special how he walked away from his first big payday. With all the deaths this month we may be talking about the wrong draft.
God bless him and his family, and his brothers still in the field.

This is really a sad, sad day. For some reason, I was just looking at stuff online about Todd Beamer ( The Flight 93 Hero from 9/11), and just came here and read that. I'll never forget what I thought to myself when the news of him turning down that contract to go to the army broke. I was just shocked and that someone would give all that up to go to war. People are just special like that. Somthing really needs to be done about this war, its getting rediculous. R.I.P bud.

This is a tragedy for a number of reasons. I hope that this report has been confirmed (though I've heard it from a number of outlets now) so that it doesn't cause the Tillman family any undue anguish. The Tillman family is in my prayers.

That is one awesome American and atragic loss for our great Country as a whole. As an ex-Marine [Marine for life actually] I'll be the first to admit that war is a Mother Fletcher.

May GOD bless and comfort his family in their time of need.

This makes football seem like a silly game when you hear about stuff like this.

peace

I was sitting here watching ESPN and quietly fuming about how ungrateful and whiny Eli Manning is for dissing SD. And then the story about Tillman hit. This was an honorable man. What he felt in his heart was more important than what filled his wallet and he was willing to give his life to prove it.

This is very sad indeed.

It's time like these that we should remember to thank BleedBurgundy and any other Warpathers who are serving or have served overseas for us

I was so surprised by and encouraged to hear that Tillman turned down the $4 million deal to serve our country. Today is a very, very sad day, but it makes me realize how great our country is and how we should never forget those who die for it.

Truly a shocking and sad news flash....

RIP Pat

you've earned repsect thoughout this whole county by walking away from the NFL to pursue what you believed in and many of us on this board, including me wish we had the balls you possess. God Bless

This is incredibly sad news. My sympathies and prayers are to his family and I want to thank everyone else who serves our great country in this way.

God speed, Pat.

It's very sad to hear the he was killed today. After giving up so much to defend our great county. May our thought and prayers got out to not only his friends and family. But the families to all who have perished.

"MAY GOD BLESS THEM ALL"
