Re: Who will be the next coach of the Redskins and does it even freakin matter?
Regarding offense or defensive coach...defense vs. offense, is doesn't matter, football is football. You have to be good at both to be a good head coach.
Leadership, teaching, mentoring player evaluation and organizational skills are just as important. I think it was Jimmy Johnson or Tony Kornheiser or Micheal Wilbon that said yesterday the that the state of coaching in the NFL is the worst we have seen is 50 years. I agree. There are more really bad teams right now that I have ever seen in my life time. More badly coached teams and players that are uber talented that do not have fundamentals. The NFL has so many bad teams that we still have a mathematical chance to win the NFC LEast. There are only a few really good teams. It fucking sucks. |

Contrary to the current opinion in our front office, our culture is not "damn good" - its been the complete opposite. The Prince of Darkness has ruined the culture of this team. Jay was a little too easy-going. Whoever we bring in needs to really change that culture and create a professional environment here - from the front office down to the locker room. To the other point, hiring great assistants really is key. Now, Gruden had some great offensive assistants here - the fact that 2 of them are successful head coaches now is a testament to that. But he could never bring in a good DC. And aside from Tomsula, I don't think any of our other defensive coaches would be ranked in the top half of the league. Gruden had a chance to get Wade Phillips and turned it down. He stubbornly stuck with Manusky last offseason... why? In both instances, there were rumblings that Jay was insecure and afraid to bring in someone who could be viewed as a potential replacement for him should he be fired. His insecurity lead to him NOT making the best hire. The new head coach cannot be that kind of guy. He's got to be someone who not only has the desire, but also the ability, to convince the best assistant coaches available to come here. Given our reputation in the league, finding the head coach who can do both things is going to be very, very difficult. I sincerely hope Snyder has already started the process of searching for a new GM and/or head coach. I say both because, while traditionally, you'd hire a GM and let him pick the coach, sometimes, if the coach is elite enough, you can do the reverse - you hire the coach and let him select the GM. I don't think there are any coaching candidates out there that have that cache, but its always possible someone unexpected could become available. There were rumors last offseason that part of the reason Jay

If we can get the right coach and GM, i'd love to do what SF did when they gave Shanahan and Lynch 6 year contracts right off the bat. Giving them that commitment right off the bat so they both know they have some time and aren't under the pressure to sacrifice the long-term to win now.

Dan has become Al Davis.
This will be the offseason of Jim Zorn V2.0. Greg Manusky will be the 2020 HC of the Redskins. Last edited by jamf; 12-04-2019 at 06:37 PM. Reason: Im drunk |

I think the trend away from negative reinforcement toward "atta boys" and participation trophies has had a negative effect. Back when I played in High School and College 40 years ago your typical coach at those levels was the Vince Lombardi hard ass type. Dumb mistakes were meet with a reward of running laps, wind sprints or being called out and embarrassed in front of your teammates. These days I read where High School coaches have been fired for cussing at players. I see players walk off the field while committing stupid personal foul penalties without being confronted by a coach or fellow players. I could only image what would happen to a player if they did the "dog peeing" act celebrating a touchdown if Woody Hayes was coaching them. |

Here is a thought and I haven't seen it asked before. If we can Bruce and bring in a new GM. The GM will most likely bring in his people, including a head coach and medical staff.
Would Trent come back? He has said many times, his issue is not with Dan but with Bruce. |

I just cannot fathom that after years of TW giving his all to this organization(knowing how dysfunctional it was) that he suddenly went full jerk off. Like you said we don’t know the whole story. That being said there is no way he comes back Bruce or no Bruce. And even if he would this dipshit owner will make sure the worst gm in the league comes back before a HOF LT does. |

If Trent really had an issue with the way the team handled the medical situation, he would have filed a grievance with the NFLPA. But he didn't. Instead, when the team petitioned the league and NFLPA to investigate, Trent refused to allow it. Its abundantly clear that, although there are probably a lot of emotions and hard feelings involved on both sides, this really is all about money. The Redskins made Trent the highest paid LT in the league. They gave him a front-loaded deal, which means they paid him more money in the early years, and no guaranteed money in the last year. Trent knew the contract he was getting when he signed it - it favored him, not the team. So really, by asking for a new deal when he did, he was trying to have his cake and eat it to. He was essentially wanting every year that he plays to have a high amount of the money guaranteed, but that's not the deal he signed. Bruce Allen is a lying snake and he needs to go. But so is Trent and so does he. If we really want to change the culture here, we cant tolerate the behavior of either of them.

If Bruce is canned and suddenly TW is cool with playing here I’d take him back, but I’d also consider trade offers for him

I cant imagine a new coach/GM would want to give significant money to an older player with injury concerns, risk of suspension, who held out a year over greed and threw the organization under the bus. But who knows, maybe they would decide he was enough of a talent upgrade over Penn or a similar veteran to be worth it.
