Redskins @ Pats Post Game

I think we have a tons of reasons to be excited! What do you guys think?

Positives:

Defense: We got ourselves some high quality secondary depth. Stroman played great, Nicholson was back in great shape, Apke showed tremendous potential... heck every DB that came in seemed to play really well! Vigil and Spaight were on fire, Hamilton looked good, so nice competition there! I feel like Ryan Anderson played with way better intensity than last season.

Offense: Guice, obviously. We got some incredible competition at WR: Harris seems to be a lock, Davis made a case for himself, Sims made some nice plays. The FB Elijah Wellman showed some potential. Colt is a quality back up.

Overall the guys looked prepared and hungry, our 2nd and 3rd stringers did great against a lot of Pats starters!

Negatives:

Defense: A part from Ioannidis and Lanier, wasn't impressed by our DL play. Settle has a tendency to stop his feet and gets driven back way too much for a NT. He managed to make a couple of plays in the second half.

Offense: Geron Christian was lost out there. A part from Nsekhe we have a REAL depth issue at OL... Scary.

yeah mike Phillips, Richmond times SKins beat reporter said last night in the lockerroom both of them were walking around and seemed good. matty I doesn't need an mri....he's good. Quinn is fine.

I thought Guice looked the part...really excited by his performance.

anybody else love a real fullback? I thought that kid was solid.

Settle, stroman, danny Johnson, mo harris and rob davis...big standouts.

Agreed, he had a holding call but he looked good. Decent hands too.

Re: Redskins @ Pats Post Game

So... I'm one to stand corrected when I'm proven wrong... And I'm no line play expert. But... I re-watched all our defensive snaps, with my eyes only on #97 Tim Settle... I really don't know what I'm missing that you guys see.

1st half: absolute non factor, driven back and thrown to the ground by the 1st. Only couple of plays were he got a little bit of push were against #74 Cole Croston... 3rd string tackle playing guard. Comes out way too high, doesn't move his feet enough.

2nd half: against 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th stringers. Driven back by #66 3rd string center in the beginning of the 3rd QTR. Then began to lower his body and made one nice play against that same 3rd string #66 James Ferentz. He also pushed a 5th string rookie TE #85 a few yards back. Got taken completely out of a play by #72 Luke Bowanko, 4th string center. He split one double team (#72 and #74...). He batted a ball late in the game, against #66, he didn't have a real push though.

So, he made one real legit play against a 3rd string center, recovered a lucky fumble and batted a ball late in the 4th... Other than that: absolute non factor.
Really don't see what I'm missing.

Re: Redskins @ Pats Post Game

As discussed on the other thread, I am obviously wrong on this one since all the experts think Settle played well yesterday night.
Let's put it this way: I guess it's pre-season and the smart way to see it is to see the flashes as proofs that potential is there and reasons to hope he can do that on a consistent basis against starters.

Anyway, I sure hope we see more of what you guys see and less of what I saw come week 1.

Yes. I believe that's the quick and dirty way for fans to spot possible contributors. For some players, like Guice, you don't need to see much. The talent jumps off the TV screen. For others, you might need to see more.

As for Settle, it looks to me like he can become a beast in the middle which I find very exciting because it looks like we may have drafted two DL studs this year to add to our stable of good young D-linemen. Time will tell.

Re: Redskins @ Pats Post Game

It's the first preseason game, there isn't much of a playbook so I can't really judge anyone for anything other than effort.
I was disappointed that the Defense was exhausted in the second half after the Pats put that 19 play drive on them. they never recovered.

With that said, I've seen enough from Stroman and Harris as punt returners to never need to see Crowder back there again.

Stroman needs to be our full time return specialist with Harris as backup.

Re: Redskins @ Pats Post Game

ended up going out and not watching but i have the replay recording at home, i'll give a look ... i saw the highlights, saw a few flashes from a few guys, hope Guice is ok. Colt did look like a serviceable back up, the way he usually does, our WRs looked good, the secondary and pass rush is something i'll be waiting to see develop when our 1's are on the field but did see some good things from the safties... looks like a good start minus hogan but hey, thats 3rd string for ya
