My beef is with the assertion that there are no free agents out there currently worth spending money on. There are certainly no big names left, but did you know Ryan Grant is available? With our shitty WR situation I would think the team would sniff around on him. He's nothing more than a #3, but we need a reliable #3. We need everything.
I think you go get someone like Tre Boston so we have our safeties set and can concentrate on other needs in the draft.

I get where you are coming from, but here is my thought process. Any free agents we signed now are not markedly better than those we could sign after the draft. And there are always a plethora of players cut from other teams after the draft and June 1. Players who are release do not count against the compensatory pick formula. Free agents we sign now would.

So, if the low-mid tier players available now aren't significantly better than those we could get later, WHY NOT wait and see what we get in the draft, wait and see who gets released after the draft and June 1, and then fill whatever holes are remaining? By doing this, we position ourselves to maximize the 2020 compensatory picks we receive (right now we should get a 4th rounder for Crowder).

Other than grabbing top free agents that sign in the first few days of free agency, there really is no benefit to try and fill remaining holes at this stage of the offseason.

Tons of the guys available right now were released this offseason. Ryan Grant is one of them.

Yeah, and Ryan Grant was released for a reason. The same reason we let him walk last year - He's not any good. In my opinion, he doesn't represent even a slight upgrade over what we have already - and we are fully expected to address WR in the draft. So why sign Grant now just to drop him in a couple months?

Well he was dropped by Indy because he was making $7M or $8M or whatever it was. He might be gettable at $1.5M now. But he's just an example, there are lots of guys like him out there and if you don't think he can help us I think you overrate our roster a bit.

This. Actually for the last 10 days we've seen decent "depth" guys start to come off the board. Example is our old friend Tom Compton...He signed a 1.3ish one year deal to come in and provide the Jets depth in the interior. He was decent for the Viks last year in the same role.

If your looking at CB someone like Morris Claiborne is still out there. Versatile..played well last year. You have a TE Maxx Williams out there, never reached his potential in Baltimore, but a solid blocker and still young. Vet Pass rusher, still a couple out there as a fail safe for Ryan Anderson slated as starter. Tre Boston, solid contributor at safety for year...So options are available.

Sitting around and saying wait for the draft...well sure, but your setting yourself up for reaching for need, plus the draft is not predictable. Guys you like could be taken in front of you or you draft a guy who needs more time on the bench versus playing ie Louisville tackle from last year.

There might be 16 games between all three of them.

I don't overrate our roster - I just think you're overrating his talent. The skins have familiarity with Grant, so I think its telling that they haven't made him an offer.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019

The OP has been updated to reflect the acquisition of Eli Manning and subsequent contract extension.

There may be a corresponding move or two that we don't yet know about to clear the necessary cap space to accommodate Manning's contract. Perhaps the long-awaited Scherff extension.

I haven't yet updated the likely cost of the draft pool. Trading away the 1st and 3rd rounders will mean that we don't have to spend as much on our draft picks, so that's likely to come down from $4M closer to $1.5M or $2M.

More to come.

Grant is below average and has no guts....these are the reasons why he hasn't cut it with 2 nfl teams.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019

Is it really north of $12M right now with no rookies signed?

yes. we'll have about 4M left after rookie deals (Finlay said theyd take up about 8-9M because we have 2 1st rounders), but a Scherff extension and releasing Davis could free up 10M. That would give us some room to sign a veteran safety and a couple other veteran backups in the post-june1 cuts.

I didn't know that they could manipulate the 5th year option contract number for players like Scherff, that's awesome.

We're in really good cap shape.
