Replacing the Dline coach seems to have really help this defense a lot
Agreed. Hate to say it but it definitely looks like Sam Mills wasn't the right guy for the job.

is it odd CY didn't play yesterday or at least suit up maybe for a play or two. This has to be one of the longest recovers for a knee for anyone. I feel like we the fans are in the dark a bit with what is really going on.

Apparently he caught the flu bug that has been going around the team. Regardless, given the weather conditions I doubt whether they would have risked it anyway

I'm starting to wonder the same thing. It's getting to the point of anything good we get from him will be a benefit. I just don't want him to interfere with how well the dline has been playing. Not giving up on C Young, but we need to see something soon. He is quickly in year 3 in the NFL.

Heís still not even a year out from a pretty complicated injury that wasnít the typical ACL injury. I think we need to relax.

CY will play when he's ready.. He's just an added bonus at this point. If he can stay healthy all year next yr it would be nice

At this point him playing will be about him coming back and making progress in being comfortable on the field. He's not gonna come back and be a stud right out of the gate.

Notice how long it took B.Rob to come back from getting shot to being comfortable? This was the first week he really looked comfortable, juking guys and shifting around. I expect it to take CY99 a similar amount of time - he's gotta learn to trust his leg again.

Yeah, this year is now about knocking the rust off and gaining confidence in the knee going into next season. Any sort of above average production would be gravy.

Play solid and stay healthy, would be a good end of the season for him now.

Iíve lowered my expectations for CY a couple of notches because (1) he wasnít the transcendental player we were hoping for when we drafted him . . . more of an Arrington type whose physical prowess played better in college, and (2) his injury was more than garden variety, the kind that can f with your confidence. Iím hoping for a triumphant return next year, and CY at 90% is a good addition to any team. But we may soon be maxing out on d-line contracts and do better letting another team gamble on his future.

Allen has been extended and I think we need to keep Payne.

The team will likely have to make a choice between keeping Sweat or Young.

I think Young has more Lawrence Taylor type potential, but with a higher bust potential too. I think Sweat will be a more consistent, lower floor type guy, like Kerrigan.

If we keep Allen, Payne, and either Young or Sweat, we will have an above average front at worst.

I hope we keep Payne and figure out the DE position after that. Allen and Payne are kicking ass. Kicking ass up front, on either side, is always good.

Rain Saturday in NYC, no rain in forecast Sunday.

If Chases does go, I imagine it will be limited snaps (10-15) on pass plays only.

I completely agree with you, the free styling/selfishness issue was a huge problem with the D-Lineman and our DE's in particular. They were all looking for the big sack/big play and not reading and reacting.
For the first time in decades I recently (in the last few weeks) saw our DE's actually cover their gap responsibility in the running game and also blow up screen plays because they actually stopped and read the play successfully. In the past they used to sprint as fast they could to the QB. Now when the O-lineman lets the DE's unblocked they look around and read. They do not fall into the trap. Smart football finally.
Chase Young is going to have to play team football. The team winning is more important than your sack stats.

Good assessment. And now there's a true Alpha on the line in Jon Allen. Even a guy of Chase's stature needs to follow the lead of the soon-to-be All Pro DT. I think he will.

Re: Chase Young to reserve/PUP list; out at least first four games

Sports radio was talking about that this morning.

Last year RR repeatedly said they need show maturity.

Warren Sapp when he visited in offseason said our scheme requires gap responsibility/integrity.

When Chase went out last year, we saw an almost immediate difference on the edge in the run game when Smith-Williams/Toothill came in.

How great has Smith-Williams and Toothill been? Solid play from your next man up.

Toney .. thought hed be coming in on pass plays as a pass rush specialist.

I wish i was in the film room with the D-Line when they replayed the John Ridgeway body slam of the Houston rb. He seems to be fittin in and getting some valuable snaps.
