I am not really a fan of college football so I don't watch much but I was listening to Sheehan's podcast I believe last Friday's episode. In it he said all QBs that are considered mid round draft picks are grading out well below what Kirk Cousins did as a mid round pick. If true the QB has to be picked early because it sounds like the juice won't be worth the squeeze.
Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
19. WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
Team Needs: Quarterback, cornerback, wide receiver Credit to Alex Smith on his comeback player of the year campaign; the man ranked outside of the league’s top-30 signal-callers in every meaningful metric. Lost in the Football Team’s “heroic” decision to release Dwayne Haskins was the reality that they got absolutely nothing in return from their 2019 first-round pick. Kirk Cousins is the best QB this franchise has drafted since the new millennium and it isn’t particularly close. CB Ronald Darby (PFF’s 14th-highest graded CB) is a free agent. Neither Kendall Fuller (43rd) nor Jimmy Moreland (78th) managed to crack the top-40 corners. Regardless of Darby’s final decision, adding some more talent to the secondary to complement the team’s collection of monsters across the defensive line should be a priority. Terry McLaurin is objectively a stud, but another high-end option would be much appreciated. Free agent and incumbent No. 2 WR Cam Sims does possess some underrated ability after the catch; just realize this unit is one injury to the artist known as F1 away from being painfully thin. Only the Lions, Steelers, Colts and Jaguars have fewer 2021 dollars devoted to the WR room. |

Keep dreaming. We would need to trade up into the top 10 I think. |

It's not a dream Skinzguy, it's just a mock draft simulation. Just thought I would share the results. I don't even really care for Fields all that much. |
Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
Simple answer:
Make a big FA pickup at WR- $$$ - Galloway, Robinson or similar We only Move up in the draft to get a top QB - my guess is a big trade to get into the top 10 in the draft to get the fourth or fifth QB. Anything higher (top 2 or 3 QB ) is too insane a price, as is the trade for Watson. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

What are we saving our FA money for this season? Except for QB, the biggest hole is at WR. In fact, we need a excellent or outstanding WR to balance McLaurin, as well as more Depth below those two. Cam Sims is really the only credible WR on the team below McLaurin. Steve Sims will be let go. Harmon will be back but how good is he really? FA will INSTANTLY solve the WR black hole. I bet we will use our FA piggy bank to fix WR, WR and LB. Last year Rivera went for Cooper with the big bucks in FA. I believe he will do the same again this season, except he will get his man. To trade up to draft our franchise QB, we will lose some of our draft picks like the third rounder you talk about. After we draft our QB, the remaining draft picks will go for the OL, where we need youth, depth and quality. I would be surprised if the team picks up anyone in FA who is over 30. Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
They have stated the need for a veteran WR to go with the young guys, no point in drafting another guy to go along with the very young group we have. C.Sims, Harmon and AGG are all WR3 types at this point, so aside from the WR2 spot they are in pretty good shape. Aside from a MLB, there is no much else to spend your FA money on this off season. There is always that issue with signing FA that you will end up with a Paul Richardson but if the coaching staff is good you should hope to find another Pierre Garcon. Given the WR depth in the draft, the number of FAs available and the need to save cap dollars this year there is a chance that the FA market this off season won't be as hot for WRs as in the past.

Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
In terms of who's there and cap space we have to land at least 1 of the top 3 or 4 FA WR's. Question is will we get the best result possible, given that we don't have a top notch QB in place? In any discussions, assuming we don't land someone like Watson soon, we'll have to be talking up our moves to come (like the draft). Yes the FA's want the money, but they know they'll be looking at a good deal wherever they go, so they will want to go to somewhere they face a good chance of playoff football. Arguably we have a good chance given the D, but we HAVE to find a #1 QB soon to back that up. If they don't make a trade or sign an FA (but who?) then it's the draft for sure. Which likely means going into camp with Allen, Heinicke and a rookie. I'm not 100% sure that's enough to persuade Robinson, Galloday etc. Management are going to have to really sell their ambitions to persuade a top guy to come here.

If we go into FA for a WR I want speed we will be in on Curtis Samuel and I wouldn't mind a one year prove it deal for John Ross.

Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk
Agree. One of the drafts top OT, OG, ILB, CB or Safety....even a physical TE that can be a receiver threat but must be a strong blocker. We need to be able to be a physical offense when needed. We are seriously lacking in that department,. We are a finesse offense. Weak! Don’t get me wrong, I also want a prolific passing game, it is important. But our passing game will improve when we develop a strong a running game threat. We do not have balance. Plus I do not want the third or fourth rated QB or WR at 19. That would be a waste when we have so many needs. Let a great player drop to us (BPA), as all the desperate teams reach for QB and WR, please do not reach for a QB or WR. I do not want another Dwayne Haskins project. |
Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
I really want Allen Robinson. But he's the best overall FA that will be available. Doubt we end up with him.
With McLaurin we already have a No. 1 WR so an Allen Robinson type WR would be an extreme luxury. I'll gladly take him or Godwin or Golladay, but it won't be my expectation. But we absolutely need to sign a WR in that tier 2 category like a Corey Davis or Will Fuller or Curtis Samuel, etc. |
Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread
The PFF mock draft simulator is broken/drunk.
I tried to offer our 1st round pick to the Jaguars straight up for a 3rd round pick and it was rejected. Was just experimenting after I offered a more reasonable trade to try and move down. |

To be fair, for every McLaurin there is a Taylor Jacobs, same with 1st rounders, for every Justin Jefferson, there is a Josh Doctson |
To be fair, for every McLaurin there is a Taylor Jacobs, same with 1st rounders, for every Justin Jefferson, there is a Josh Doctson
Truth! The draft, while not a pure crapshoot depends as much on happenstance as a strong FO. You might know the best players and then they aren't available, or a flaw that was covered by a player's college coaching or environment might become a magnified flaw on the NFL field.

I might disagree. 5 high leverage positions: QB,LT,Edge,WR,CB. We have Edge covered. No stud FA young LTs or CBs available. Nor QBs obviously. I don't like overpaying, but if a true stud #1 WR available, in his prime, I think you pay just because it is a high-leverage position and you have so many others to fill. Then you focus on primarily building through draft with rest. Problem is we then have to extend McL, and we then have a roster really have capwise on DL and WR. You'd have to crunch the cap numbers to see if viable. Have to cut Smith, his cap savings can almost pay a new WR. I think we have several "3rd rounder" guys all failing to contribute, for various reasons. Even if we signed WR, we still need QB,LT,CB,FS,MLB in draft. Every third rounder isn't going to be some 1st round gem. Yes, I would prefer to draft and primarily develop, and we should continue with this approach, but given all our needs, and the fact that LOTS of stud WRs in FA, I might bite. It would depend on how good a player at how good a price. Whoever we sign has to have some size. Can't have two smurfs. |

We aren't drowning in cap money. Cap is about $180, we have a cap of $140-$150 depending whose numbers you believe. That's AFTER cutting Smith. $30M. $4-8M of that for rookie pool. Resign Scherff $15M+ a year? All the sudden not room to sign a stud WR, though I'd love to. You could resign Scherff and a FA WR for low 1st-year cap numbers, but then you might have to start letting our 1st round FAs walk as there rookie deals expire because later cap numbers huge. But I agree, getting a stud WR could be sensible. The perennial contenders get their big-five players all on rookie deals. Also, keep in mind, the guys we just replaced Smith with probably won't draft as well, based on track records. |

No LONG-Term FA deals (like Snyder did) for guys over 30. Obviously short term 1 or 2 year deals are great. The best thing about Rivera and this teams fast turn around is that players will be flocking here to play on a good team VERSUS “just coming here to get OVER- PAID”. Like the typical Dan Snyder deals. Cap room is about 6th in the NFL. Some of it is predicated on dropping Alex Smith. Got to gently cut those strings. Not insane money in cap but certainly enough to get Galloway or in his league. In the draft, I think we will trade up enough to get the 3-5th QB taken. That will be expensive! Long-shot is trading to Miami for Tua if THE “Fins” get Watson. |
