Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
Manning and RGIII as the backup is the best case. You got Manning for 3 to 4 years then resign RGIII and release Manning. You are set at QB for 10 to 12 years then start building everything else around that.

Good watch.
Schefter said PM favors the AFC. Arrrrrrrgh! OK, then I'll predict that it will be Miami. It may soon be time for the Skins to pick up the red phone and call St. Louis to make the deal for the #2 pick. |

I highly doubt a deal for the #2 pick will be done before 24 hours from the draft.

I agree, at least officially. There could easily be a "handshake deal" in place that will be contingent on the Rams not getting a better offer or the other team getting cold feet. I like to think of it as getting engaged but keeping it secret from everyone else. |
I buy that 100%. He is not coming here no matter what we offer him. Why would he come to the team that needs the most work and then have to go against his brother 2 or 3 times a year. I think they enjoy the times they do play against each other but not in this case.
Yeah, I kinda do too and I think that sucks. I want to say in the past when they played each other, one of them stated they didnt enjoy it. dunno, I think it would be kick ass for the league to see that match up twice a year. |
Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
In regards to Manning wanting a home within the next week I think part of it is he wants to learn the offense as soon as possible the other part is getting in position to encourage the front office to go after his guys when free agency opens.

With this you basically pay RGIII to ride the pine, then RGIII is up for a new contract and he hasn't even proven he's worth it yet. That's a lot of $$ to tie up at QB too. I think it's a case of picking one or the other. Not both. |
Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
Hearing the Broncos might actually be a dark horse for Flynn. Unfortunately for Flynn, both the Dolphins and Browns (particularly the Dolphins) have been lukewarm about their interest in Flynn. Seattle still very interested
I think I probably give it a 60-40 edge Manning over RG3 as our next QB. We shall see |

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
I hadnt really thought about it until i read the article linked here, but this is a big area of concern if we sign manning:
Five thoughts on Redskins signing Manning | Washington Examiner
4. The offensive line's strength does not mesh with a straight drop-back passing game. The Redskins' line is built to block on the move and is helped by play-action and bootlegs. But Manning made bad and mediocre lines look good in Indianapolis with quick decision making. If he's in a system he knows well and with players he's comfortable with, that should continue. However, it should increase the need to find a right tackle in the draft eventually to replace oft-injured Jammal Brown. Of course, that could happen anyway.
If we get manning, we may not have the right type of offensive line to protect him. So lets just say we change our OL philosophy and overhaul the line (including drafting a tackle in the 1st round) to better suit a straight drop-back passing game. What do we do when manning retires in 3-5 years? get rid of the line again and go back to a more shanahan-esque line with smaller, more athletic guys? or stick with the manning-esque system so we keep the line in tact? As much as i love the idea of manning in the B&G, these concerns are really making me reconsider my position. |

Anything can happen (see Andy Dalton), but I would much rather have RG3 or Manning, than having to bet on Tannehill and Grossman/Orton. |

Oh no, I was just speaking in terms of those two only. Though, from what I hear it's probably 90% it will be one of those two (doubt it's both) |

I think o-line play may be something Manning can adjust to, but I also think that the thread of Manning makes any o-line better. Manning is notorious for picking up apart blitz-happy defenses, and that was without a running game. While I think our o-line should be much improved (provided they stay healthy, but that happens to every o-line), I also think having a QB of Manning's caliber, along with an actual running, should take care of any o-line issues. Grossman and Beck didn't scare any defenses, so they stacked the line and blitz the hell out of us. I don't think the same thing will be happening with Manning under center and an improved receivers group. |

Good point. But for some reason I feel like Dalton was the better prospect, but that is a view probably held by nobody. I know I sound like a broken record, the games I saw Tannehill play, not alot impressive. |

True but I kinda doubt we would go with RT at #6 if we got Manning. I think we'd go BPA at #6, and look for a QB to develop later on. |

A 90% chance of either Manning or Griffin makes for a happy day. |
Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
All that sounds good. He looks the part. But doesn't history show that there's a 50% chance that either Luck or RG3 will be a bust? ... or won't live up to expectations?? I can't give up all those picks for Griffin. We're simply not in a position to do so.
If you take away Rex's turnovers and the Beck experiment from last year, we were in the playoff hunt. Add good quarterbacking to the roster we had and we were making noise. From this point of view, we are not in a position NOT to make a play for a big-time QB. |

I think we'd go BPA at #6, and look for a QB to develop later on.
If we did draft a tackle at 6, i would think it would be a left tackle. given williams is one smoke away from a 1 year suspension and has the ability to play both left and right, it might be prudent to move him to the right side, as itd be less impactful to replace a RT than a LT during the season due to injury. That said, if we are stuck at 6, i think we'll take offensive BPA. |
Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
If we take a T, it's like Martin or Glenn (with Reiff a bit of a smaller possibility). Though I don't think any of them are taken at 6.
If we stay at 6 I believe it's Tannehill, Claiborne, Blackmon in that order of likelihood. With Floyd a dark horse |

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
Whatever team RG3 goes to will have a Cam Newton type of effect. Ryan Tannehill not so much. I live in Charlotte and the excitement for the Panthers has never been this high. RG3 is a better prospect than Cam was and thanks to Andrew Luck coming out is within our reach. We need to make this happen.

I'm tempted to say yes. That said, it would not surprise me at all if the Dolphins moved into the top 5 to get Tannehill if we can legitimately convince them we'd take Tannehill even with Manning |
Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)
By the end of April we're going to have 2 new QBs. I'm 98% sure of that. Doesn't necessarily mean Rex is gone. Because if we sign Manning and draft say Kirk Cousins then Cousins would not be the back-up right away...even if we was taken high in the 2nd round. Even Tannehill might be not be the back-up from the get go.

I hope that we can take Tannehill at 6. My fear of a potential Manning signing is that we will then not go all-in on finding a QB of the future to groom. I think that someone like Cousins will be a career backup so a combo like Manning + Cousins (or other lower tier rookie) is problematic IMO. |
