Heyer is a good player, but he's not ready to start. I do see the potential in him, playing behind Samuels he'll learn a lot.
Why wont we just put Heyer at LG?

Re: Redskins Insider: What we learned

I don't see what the big problem is, JLC is simply calling it like he sees it. I'll agree there was slight improvement from Heyer in the second game over the first, but still -- he's only playing because the coaches obviously believe that they don't have anyone else who can play left tackle.

Also, think of the competition Heyer faces in practice compared to what he has to deal with from opposing teams. The Redskins haven't had a decent threat at the defensive end position since the days of Charles Mann and Fred Stokes. The level of speed rushers Heyer lines up against in exhibition play is light years ahead of anything the coaches can throw at him in practice.

And let's not forget: The Redskins are in this position because they crap on their draft picks in the first 4 rounds. Over the last 3 or 4 years, think of all the stockpiling they could have done preparing for the future and situations just like this?

Even if he's overstating it, JLC is right, trusting a qb's blindside to an undrafted free agent rookie is too much of a gamble. At least give him some help w/a rb or te.

While I disagree with most of what JLC says, there's one point I DO agree with. He wasn't lying when he said it was an accident waiting to happen. Sure, sometimes you have to go with what you know, but putting an undrafted rookie starting at tackle, EVENTUALLY someone was going to blow past him because of a rookie mistake.

Sure, it could have happened to Samuels too, but the likelihood would have been much less.

I agree with his basic premise, but he seems to be almost blaming Heyer for the illegal hit on JC. That could have happened regardless of who was in there blocking. That's all I take issue with here.
