Portis, Johnson and Parker, that's three huge ego's that need pacifying. Will Shanahan be able to make it work? |

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I love this move .. always like WP for some reason when he was with the Steelers ... I think to what the Jets had going last year with 3 solid backs and i like the thought of having these 3 share duties ... think about Dallas too, they have Choice, Barber, and Jones .. why shouldn't we have 3 studs ? Out of WP and LJ one of these guys is going to look like a bad ass and have a monster year !
A move like this helps keep our options open in the draft.
Portis, LJ, Parker certainly looks a lot better than Portis, Betts, Cartwright
Soley from the tb positon it does, but factor in Rock's special teams play & it makes a big difference on the roster. Who of these guys can play spec. teams? will DT play less on spec. teams if he's starting wr? Then is Marko going to play more teams? Somewhere there's got to be some special teams players between these 2 positions. We'll see if any rooks or journeyman make it. I'd prefer to see a rookie rb (undrafted fa would be best case) that plays teams make the roster at #3 & WP gets cut. Will make for some interesting decisions come cutting time. |

Seldom if ever will you see three star running-backs competing for the same backfield. I don't recall ever witnessing that. |

I wouldn't call these guys stars, it's not like we have Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Steven Jackson. I think all of these guys have something to prove and have very little options but to compete for the job. |

Well, former star players, we might say? I was really surprised by this move; however I love this plan.. Shanahan and Allen obviously are doing what they can do with free agency, which is stockpile on any positions if given good players.. Like few said in this thread, this gives us more options for draft.. We won't need to draft any RB and try to find a undrafted gem.. We can use all picks on O-line men, a LB and maybe FS? That is, of course unless a good RB prospect fell down to our late pick - I would not oppose to this move.. |

I meant that they are not current stars....yeah they'd be stars if this was 2004 or 2005. |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
This is vintage Shannahan, hes always got a backfield full of backs, everyone of these guys will be on the team at the start of the season.....

They used to be bright stars, now they have burned out into red dwarf stars.:) |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I think this is great. First, re-emphasizes competition and continues to send the message that they are looking everywhere. 2nd, it still doesn't preclude taking a RB if there is one Shanahan likes. 3rd, it has to send a specific message to CP, and that is a good thing.

were we there at ASU's pro day? that guy's got almost every joint on his body that's been injured, good luck to him though |

Maybe this will get CP to step it up!

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
Can I just say I am loving the way Bruce Allen/Shanahan are handling this offseason...the biggest signing we have had so far is Willie Parker?!?! And we now have a stable of backs to turn to...and the way he is going, I would be shocked if we don't dedicate at least 2 picks in the draft to the offensive line. Shanahan is a smart guy...he won in Denver with Jake Plummer by having a solid offensive line and a plug in backs in no names like Bell etc. It is a pretty similar situation in DC and if we get the kind of production from the offense that Shanahan got out in mile-high, this could be a very good year....
I'm excited, is anyone else excited?? lol |

TO will be the next guy we sign.

They may not be considered stars any longer, but they still share in that star mentality because they all have at one time been the featured back for their respective teams. Usually there are role players in the mix, but in the case of these three, all will be looking to be the man. |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
Ive been complaining about our back field for so long, man I love these pick ups. LJ annnd Willie Parker. Both coming to new team with chips on their sholders, with something to prove, in a open competition type atmosphere. I hope we somehow get rid of CP, keep Aldridge or draft (or sign undrafted) speed back, and we are set.
Joe Gibbs wouldve went crazy, these are the type of backs that he was trying to convert CP to. |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I'm going against the grain on this one. I don't like the signing. I think LJ has a chance to maybe revitalize his career, but I don't think the same about Parker. Honestly, I don't think he was ever that good. I could be wrong and he blows up, but I doubt it. If this move keeps us from getting a young guy, I think it's a mistake. I could easily conjure up a vision where all three of these older semi-injury prone backs are hurt at the same time. I want a young RB in here taking a few reps from time to time.
Like others, I think one of these players gets cut (or maybe we move Portis for a 5th round pick or something similar) to make room for a younger guy. |

doubt he'll be next unless they were bluffing on this
"We don't talk about who's on our radar screen for obvious reasons, but we do have a plan. And sometimes we'll wait to see what the market value is relative to the price, how many guys might be out there. But we're going to constantly try to upgrade our football team, and sometimes it has to do with salary as much as has to do with just getting depth. And maybe after our minicamps, maybe after the draft, some guy will be out there, and we'll gobble him because we think he has a chance to improve our football team."
since he's unrestricted I can't see why he'd say we were waiting unless we were the salary could be one thing, T.O. reportedly wants to make 6m/yr again |

Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I think LJ's advantage is his size. He can be an old power back. I'm not sure Parker can regain his speed after a certain point, and that's all he's got really.

CP- you had to wake me up? here I was Dr. Doitchbig and was starting to examine one of the new Redskinetts and.... Conciense- do you know who Willie Parker is? CP- yeah he's that really good RB in Pitt. Conciense- not anymore. CP- what happened to him? he get killed? Conciense- no, he's now a Redskin. CP- ......... son of a bitch! |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I'll be interested to see what we do about RB in the draft...and who survives training camp.
I was thinking we should trade the second pick for Gaither or pick Jahvid Best. After Spiller this year's draft lacks running back talent IMO. This will keep us stable for another year and we could in a perfect scenario draft a guy like Ingram. This should be good for Portis if he stays with the team as he will have plenty of motivation. |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
TO will be the next guy we sign.
Honestly, I do see this happening. Good, bad, or indifferent, we need to fill ARE's spot and he won't cost a lot to pick up. Perhaps they feel they can wait until next yr to revamp the RB spot. Pick up the QB they want, get an OL, LB, and a FS. Then invite as many UFA OL and LB's to camp. |
Re: Willie Parker a Skin
I still say a healthy and conditioned Portis is the best out of the 3 but they've all got their work cut out for them. This is some real head to head competition right here.
Agreed CP is still the best RB but competition is a beautiful thing, we only have 5 picks in this draft, we no longer have to focus on RB unless a steal falls in our lap. GREAT MOVE, bring on the draft bring on training camp. HTTR. |

Well yeah, I think that Parker is past his peak as well, speed was definitely a big part of his game. He was great to the outside, in the spread, etc. I think that Shanahan will take advantage of that. I mean he's not going to do to him what we did to Portis. LJ could definitely have a bigger impact since his runs might "mean more." |
