Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)

I just don't see Denver as a threat for SB contention even with Manning. Maybe Peyton's looking at the home field advantage with the altitude and is all like "that's 6 or 7 wins right there, just have to hold serve on the road." Denver has to play New England and Houston though next year, and even if they go 4-2 or 5-1 in the division with Manning, they're still just a 8 or 9 win team. And with age so rapidly becoming a factor for him, it gets tough after that.

At least with Arizona, you could see Manning putting up HoF level numbers into his late thirties, and then who knows? Maybe you get the NFC West division title next year, maybe you get a wild card in another year and have two shots at winning another SB.

I just figured he'd have more fun playing for a team that has a strong defense and would let him build the offense in his image. Like KC or Seattle.

skinsfaninok 03-13-2012 08:31 AM

Manning to Denver just makes little sense to me

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)

I think he ends up in Arizona now. Weak division, great WR in Fitz, flexible coaching staff that will let him run the show. And of course the great weather and retractable roof there.

Arizona makes the most sense, just not sure that financially Arizona can make it work. Whereas Denver can, and they can bring in his guys

I wonder if Peyton has any issue with knowing that he will bump Tebow out of town?

Denver seems desperate to do that anyway, regardless if PM goes there or not.

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)

Well if he went to Miami he wouldn't bump anyone out of town really. Otherwise it's Tebow in Denver or Kolb in Arizona.

Speaking of Miami, as I had mentioned a few months back it really looks like Flynn to Seattle. And if that's the case, and no Manning there then what do the Dolphins do?....Jason Campbell?

Maybe Miami gets desperate and trades up for Tannehill?

Or do they go pick up the scraps from Manning and go for Tebowmania, or Kolbmania?

I was watching NFLN last night and that's what they suggested, Tannehill probably won't last beyond Miami at 7. Amazing how we were talking about Tannehill as a 2nd round prospect when the season was over and now we're talking about him not even making it out of the top ten. And he hasn't even done anything besides break his foot lol.

Just wait til his pro day.

I wouldn't rule out Cleveland considering him at #4.

True. Vikings may be winners in all of this if Miami trades up to beat Cleveland. We could have QB's going 1-2-3 in the draft this year lol.

Yeah, that's why I was saying the Redskins were feeling they might have to move up because rumors were starting to circulate that Tannehill was going to be a top 5 pick

I wonder if this would help the Dolphins. I am sure they would rather pick up Tannehill, but that would be one less team in the Flynn sweepstakes.

The guys from Football Today were saying that no one wants to touch the Dolphins right now. I think Flynn may be their only option with Philbin.

I wonder what the deal is with that. I mean I get that Stephen Ross is like a young Dan Snyder with no idea how to build a team, but do people really not like the FO setup there that much that nobody wants to sign with them?

Well Fisher rejected him, now Manning. People always talk crap about us, but this is 100 times worst than anything we've been through in the MS regime (as far as reputation).

Seriously. It doesn't sound like Peyton will be the last FA to reject them. They could be the new us in terms of agents mentioning their name to drive up the price of a FA contract.

Billick said it best. "if they don't want him, why would I?"

Tebow couldn't have ended the year in better position and through no action he is looking at starting all over again potentially.

I heard JC signed a 1 year deal with the Bears.

Why isn't anyone talking about Jonathan Crompton? People mention Grossman and Beck, but to everyone who doesn't know it, this kid served as our practice squad QB last season. He was signed to a contract at the end of the season.

Just a thought, but maybe Jonathan Crompton is like all the other dime-a-dozen practice squad qb's in the NFL, which is to say easily interchangeable. Sure there's a chance he could actually be good someday, but I believe the coaches' evaluation of him. If they don't want him playing, neither do I.

Point well taken. But considering what we saw out of the quarterback play last season, it wouldn't have mattered if Crompton had gotten a chance. The QB play was that terrible. Between Grossman and Beck, 18 TD passes were thrown against 24 INTs. Both of them had a depressing QB rating of 72.

I doubt if the coaches don't think Crompton can't play. He's viewed as a young developmental project/prospect and are just bringing him along slowly. If not, why sign him to the active roster at season's end?

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)

Crompton will be our PS guy if we don't get another QB in FA or draft.

I hope we don't spend precious cap money on a FA QB like Orton, who will cost to much for a backup.

Too bad we couldn't bring JC back for the 1-year, $3.5 million Chicago paid him. :D

I think it will be:

RG3 - Day 1 starter
Beck - Shanny obviously loves (or loved) him
Crompton - Practice Squad

Unless, we draft a Kellen Moore or another mid to late-round QB.

LOL. You crazy if you think we're keeping Beck over Rex. And why are we discussing Crompton if it'll be years before he could possibly contribute? Just let him practice and learn, and maybe in a couple years' time we'll be talking about him as a viable backup.

Beck is on the roster, Rex is not. Beck only counts $600,000 against our shrunken cap.

I thought we should have given Beck a little more playing time last season. True, we had not scored for 3 weeks, but it was a lost season at that point and we knew what Rex could do already.

We do not want to be the Bears without a real backup, but we also do not want to invest much in one. If Rex is cheap enough and no one else wants him, sure, make the swap.

If anyone but RG3 is playing QB, it's going to be a huge drop-off no matter who it is.

Beck was ten times worse than Rex. At least Rex moved the ball, Beck looked like a scared rookie all over again. It doesn't matter if Rex is unsigned or not, Beck will not be coming back. We gave him over a year to learn the playbook while riding the bench, and he still failed miserably. Our backup will either be Rex, a free agent, or a rookie we take in the later rounds of the draft. But I bet it won't be Beck.

REDSKINS4ever 03-14-2012 12:33 PM

Re: Colts Officially Release Peyton Manning (QB Thread #11)

After what we saw out of John Beck last season, how could Mike Shanahan still think highly of him as a QB? After all, the guy is 0-7 as a starter in his NFL career and 0-3 as the Redskins quarterback. If Mike Shanahan truly liked Beck, he would have stuck with him. But his preference to reinsert Rex Grossman back into the starting lineup for the rest of the season speaks volumes on his opinion of Beck. Maybe Beck will improve during the off season. After all, he works out with the likes of Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers during the off season but from what we saw of him last season, it didn't do him a bit of good. Beck, like Eli Manning, needs his own quarterbacks coach.

As far as Crompton is concerned, this coming training camp/preseason is a opportunity for him to outshine Beck or Grossman. If he does well running the offense, or even exceeds expectations, I don't see how they can send him back to the practice squad.
