It's a point system ,no need for rocket science .There are shoot outs in some games put not in a tournament of this nature .If people remember the US women vs China in the world cup .
USA Women Soccer Team win World Cup.wmv - YouTube
Just to clarify. There are shoot outs in the 2nd stage of the World Cup. Any game in the 2nd stage will be decided by penalty kicks. Watching that video brings me back to that moment. Such a historic moment for that women's team and Chastain's image with jersey off is iconic. Truth be told. Watch the women's soccer team is much more enjoyable. They usually are favorites to win....lol There loss to Japan in the last World Cup title game was heart breaking. Lost the same way they beat China. (via penalty kicks) FIFA Women's World Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia One of the best teams in the world when it comes to the women's side of it. Men...step your game up! |
Re: World Cup
If you are a Brazilian player right now you have to be feeling the pressure.
|
Re: World Cup
Quick correction: NHL no longer has ties adopting the shootout.
|
Re: World Cup
What a first match of the knockout stage! Chilé definitely deserved the win, but as the USMNT discovered against Portugal, the fútbol gods are cruel and fickle.
|
Re: World Cup
Poor Mexico, just can't shake that knockout stage curse. Controlled the game for the most part until the 88th minute, then it all fell apart.

I really like their coach,tough match |
Re: World Cup
The extra time in this Greece/Costa Rica game is entertaining. Greeks have had opportunity after opportunity and have been denied every time. I still can't believe they blew that 5 on 2 attack on the goal. Now onto penalty shots!
|
Re: World Cup
Go USA , hopefully will be on the way home when this kicks off......or still at work with OT .

Re: World Cup
U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
Key today is consistency. Belgium has the talent to take advantage of even the smallest mistakes. Keep it clean, smart passes, and attack when the opportunities present themselves, and they've got a puncher's chance. After seeing Algeria take Germany to extra time, anything is possible! Also, Jozy may be available. I don't expect him to start, but perhaps come in around the 75th minute as a "spark," if they need one. |

Which way? Belgium is loaded with talent (from EPL) but they haven't played worth shit so far. It's a young team who's probably going to be the favorites in the next World Cup. |

by Belgium. Yeah, i have a friend who is a soccer nut, him and his wife, they watch premier league and all that bulls*t 24/7 and he pretty much said the exact samething about belgium and next world cup champion. He put money on 2 teams to win it this time, Belgium and Colombia. Not because he thinks they would win, but the payouts/odds were really good. He thinks winner most likely be Germany this time. |
Re: World Cup
Actually just texted him and he said any win now by the US is a colossal upset on the world stage. It would offically "plant the flag" for the US program. He also thinks US really isnt that good outside several players....the best being the goalie.

He's correct. Our players outside of Tim Howard (world class goalie btw) are marginal compared to the rest of the world. Our supposedly best player (Bradley) has done absolutely nothing this World Cup, and a key injury to Jozy hasn't helped much. This team has been getting it done on heart/effort alone and it's fun to watch. |

Re: World Cup
Not a pretty game between Argentina/Swiss. Switzerland's goalie is playing like a beast saving opportunity after opportunity. Swiss on the other hand look inept on offense like we do.

id be pissed if i sat and watched a game for an hour and half and no one scored

There are shots on goal, many of them. Just very good defense being played by the Swiss. Now going into extra time. |

Wait ... are you talking about a soccer game or your last date? |
Re: World Cup
Messi to di Maria with 2 mins left to go before penalty kicks. Wow. Argentina wins this.
|
Re: World Cup
I nearly spoke too soon about Argentina winning. Holy shit. The last 3 minutes of this game was amazing. I still can't get over how many opportunities the Swiss have blown this game. Shot themselves in the foot and really don't deserve to advance with that shitty display on offense. The Swiss had shot about 8 feet in front of goal and still hit the side post. DAFUQ???

i spoke to someone who said usa is possesing, but not aggressive enough with the ball ala germany game. |
Re: World Cup
Tim Howard carrying us again.
|
Re: World Cup
Wondo missed the opportunity of a lifetime. Blew it. Game winner at that. Onto extra time.
|
Re: World Cup
I can't believe Dempsey missed
|
Re: World Cup
The US had their chances and just never finished ,still all in all very good cup appearance .
|
Re: World Cup
The OT period was out of this world awesome. US showed a lot of fight.
The difference in this match was the striker that came in for Belgium, mc-something. He was the man |
Re: World Cup
US was pathetic on offense until the OT. Look at this graph, this explains everything that is wrong with the squad. Hell, they only had 4 shots on goal against Germany. Inept offense is giving them too much credit. You can see the discrepancy in skill levels between the US and other teams when it comes to passing and possessing the ball.
Tim Howard carried this team past group play, and by far was one of (if not the #1) best goalies in the tournament. Set a record today with most saves (16) in a game. SIXTEEN saves!!!! You know he had to be thinking......."What kind of shit players do I have around me???" |
Re: World Cup
I will say this though. The team played well above its talent level and played with a lot of heart and soul. That's pretty much all you could ask of this group. Hopefully our talent level will ascend in the years to come. Then again, I like being the underdogs for once in competition. :0

Re: World Cup
Saw a quote that pretty much reflects that opinion:
"The U.S. is boatloads of no fun to play, but their technical deficiencies when compared to the remaining eight teams remain profound. If Howard had merely been great rather than otherworldly, Belgium would have won 4-0." |

Our offense is a lil "deer in the head lights" |
Re: World Cup
Don't know a lot about soccer, but to me Julian Green's goal was simply amazing. Dude is running basically full speed, extends for the kick like that, and still keeps his balance? Not only great balance and athleticism, but that must take some great technique as well.
Bradley's pass was also pretty good.
both :( ...
Try Sex Panther. Re: World Cup
Finally watched the final 40 minutes or so of the game (listened to it on the radio). My goodness, will Wondo ever be able to sleep again? Had the game winner on his foot, and SHANKAPPOTAMUS. Man... I know they were drastically outplayed by the Belgians, but sometimes you outplay a team and they score to equalize/beat you anyway (like Portugal did to us).
Sigh. |

Re: World Cup
Devastating for Brazil. Silva out for the Germany game as well.

Re: World Cup
Brazil (short handed today) is getting crushed by Germany 5-0 only 32 minutes into the game. Ouch.
