Re: Betts better than Portis?
This is exactly what I wanted to hear from Ladell:
Instead of fleeing from the shadow of Portis, Betts has elected to remain a Redskin. "Most teams use two tailbacks," Betts said. "If I left here, I would probably still be part of a 1-2 punch somewhere else. "I enjoy playing here. I enjoy playing for Joe Gibbs. I believe in what he has for us. I want to get this thing turned around." The Redskins believe re-signing Betts is a step in the right direction. No back would have average more unless they weighed over 250 with the way that offense was run. Since Then, he has had above average yards per carry, anything over 4.2 is very effective in this league. Portis is the better back OF COURSE!!!! |

Re: Betts better than Portis?
Off the subject some . Why did they pull Betts when we got into scoring range and put in Ducket? He sucks.
|
Re: Betts better than Portis?
Cause he's freaking huge? I don't have a problem with that on first down, but put Betts in to add some depth to the options.

Re: Betts better than Portis?
Sorry, that theory doesn't fly.
Portis averaged 4.1 yards a carry this season, 4.3 last season, and 3.8 two years ago. Betts is averaging 4.7 yards a carry this season after today. So obviously if you gave Portis the same amount of carries, he would not get the same numbers. Call it injuries, call it better blocking, I don't care, but betts needs to be given his props. ps- portis had 1516 yards last season (a redskins record) on 352 carries. If Betts had the same amount of carries this year as Portis last year he'd have 1654 yards. Just a thought. Also, if you take away his two injury games (philly and minn.) Portis averaged over 21 attempts per game. Again, just a thought.
I hate to tell you it does fly.Anyone that watches football knows RBs run on teams easier after the half. They gain even more yards in the 4th.Why,because the D gets tried.Portis hardly got any carries after the first and second quater. So you can believe what ever you want. All i know is Portis is the more proven and he is the better RB. |

He runds straight and hard and there nothing else to him. When he does happen to get good yardage the defense was probably looking for a pass play where he is blocking or oging out for a pas sbecuase that is pretty ,much what we use the guy for. |
Re: Betts better than Portis?
The Betts lovers need to keep some things in mind:
1. Betts can't block well 2. CP is a much better receiver and open field runner 3. Until this year, Betts has not been nearly as durable as CP |
Re: Betts better than Portis?
I have to disagree about Portis being a better receiver than Betts. I actually think CP is pretty average in that area and Betts has proven this year that he's a better receiver coming out of the backfield.
|
Re: Betts better than Portis?
CP showed some silly sticky fingers last year during The Run, though. It seemed like he had at least one highlight reel catch a game to bail out Brunell.
That said, I don't think receiving is a point I would give a huge edge to either back on. As you say, Betts has done great out of the backfield over the last few games. |
Re: Betts better than Portis?
The major difference between Portis and Betts is, Portis has been the featured back in our offense since his arival. When you're the featured back in an offense in the NFL you become a marked man, and fortunately for Betts he has not started enough games to earn that distinction. Taking nothing away from his performances in the last three games, teams still haven't game planned against him like they would a Portis. In Sunday's game, Philadelphia blitzed themselves out of position on many plays, and the Oline did a great job. I would still like to see his blocking improve.
|
Re: Betts better than Portis?
I like both Betts and Portis. Both are good backs. With that said, I think Portis is clearly the better back. Betts just doesn't have the same burst to the hole and homerun speed that Portis does. In both the Philly and Atlanta games, holes closed on Bettis that, had been half a step quicker, he would have broken for truly long gains. I am convinced Portis would have broken some big plays in both games.
