Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
We have long ways to go between now and April 29th. Depending on how it plays out, including the draft, we might not have our answer until the end of April.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
How RR and his hand picked staff solves the qb issue will show us what kind of front office they will be.
Are they willing to go all in for a known qb Do they rely on their college scouts and find a year one starter Do they say that no solution out there is worth the cost of the solution and build around what they have/can get without major trades. Who knows what will be the answer, I simply hope they make the decision based on informed football knowledge and not outside (fan or dan) pressures Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
I think much like last year when they took a run at Cooper, they will try to take a big run at a veteran QB.
Gotta say though after looking at the Tampa game again and hearing guys like Cooley break him down, Heinicke is an intriguing fall back option. Even though we only saw 5 quarters of him this year, there's a lot of like there. He can beat out Allen if there's an open QB competition. |
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
It's funny, I'm hesitant to count on Heinicke because of his size and durability. But if he was any bigger, he wouldn't have been available for us when we got him. He is still the starter imo until we add someone else. He is better than Allen (assuming we re-sign him).
|
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
I'd love Heinicke to prove all the doubters wrong and win the starting job (assuming we don't bring in an A lister i.e. Stafford). I just can't ignore playing 3 stretches, getting injured 3 times. You can't put your eggs in that one basket, and even then if he proves good enough, you can't rely on him to stay healthy at this stage. We have to at least draft a competitive QB and/or a comparable FA. All assuming Smith retires/gets cut.
Yep.. This isn't a good year for WFT to look for QB due to limited QB options in free agency and too many teams need a new QB. I still believe there's a good chance we will roll with Allen/Heinicke/rookie QB.
The options for QB in free agency this year are much better and more plentiful than next year. They are going to have to pull the trigger on a FA QB or make a trade this year. Can't roll with what they have and expect to compete again in 2021. The idea of working out a trade for Stafford is growing on me - especially if they can work out a new deal for 4-5 years. |

I know he'll be expensive, but it'd be nice to be able to use our draft capital to add to the offense. |

I don't think Heinicke's size is the concern, it's more about his playing style. He needs to protect himself better.

I really hope he is not our day one starter. Its like we took a Honda CRV and asked it to pull a 55 foot boat up a mountain and it did it one time and at the end it was all beat up and smoking but i mean it did do it. I just wouldn't want rely on that CRV for a full season of boating. We need a fucking F-350! |

I thought he did pretty well . . . except on the dive to the endzone that he got hurt on. Of course it was a playoff game on the line and he was getting his one chance to prove he can play. Not sure you can fault him for giving it all in that game. He did say he would have gone out of bounds if it weren't a do or die playoff game. |
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
The team went ALL IN for Cooper last year. If they find a long-term QB they want, Rivera has shown he will go after it.
Watson wants off his team, or so it’s reported. The offer of 3 continuous first round draft picks is a VERY tempting offer for a guy who doesn’t want to be on the team. The WFT may also have to throw in one of their very good players to seal the deal. The WFT has something it hasn’t had in a LONG TIME. A changed culture, an excellent HC, the owner (at least for now) not micro-managing everything as before, AND a promising near-time FUTURE. Instead of a team where guys came just to get OVERPAID, now they will come because this is a team ON THE RISE. A player can come to this young, energetic team and make his mark. Watson may be a long-shot, but it is not impossible. The WFT may also do a RG3-type deal to trade up in the draft. Offering the first round pick for 2021, 2022, 2023 will take the WFT from the 19th pick to what? Definitely a top five pick. We’re not going to get Lawrence but we could get one of the top 3 draft QB. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

WFT offered Cooper 37 million LESS in guaranteed $$ than Dallas gave him. They went after him, but I wouldn't say they were all in. Dallas was all in with 60 million guaranteed. |

In order for there to be a QB competition at camp you would have to already know the system. What QB"s out there have already played/know this system.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
Anyone mention Sam Darnold? The Jets have been hinting at drafting a QB for a while now and a change of scenery and a team with a D like ours would really help him.
Stafford is my first option though. |

He might bring him in if Newton's agent wanted to use the meeting to generate interest though. Sounds like they ended on good terms.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
The most realistic option is Stafford. I’d offer 19 and if they say no then u move on. My bet is Houston trades Watson to the Jets, they have the picks. Houston can grab Fields or Wilson with that pick. They won’t want #19 unless u throw in Montez Sweat and I highly doubt Ron does that.

Wrong. The WFT has NO interest in him. They could have gone for him before and they didn’t. His time on the Patriots isn’t that impressive. Here is my guess at the WFT QB “wish list” - 1. Stafford trade (big trade, three #1 picks and a premium player, such as Allen or Payne) 2. Watson trade (same as above) 3. Move up in the draft from 19 to the top five with a big trade (offering a couple #1 picks). 4. Stay at 19 and hope they can draft a lower ranked QB and turn him into a Diamond; Heinicke and this draft pick compete for the #1 QB spot in 2021. 5. Resign Heinicke - he’s a great #2 or perhaps even can compete as the #1 versus a draft pick. No brainer! Heinicke is the wild card. They will absolutely resign him. I think they will try to get him in the weight room and build up his muscles to compensate for his 6’1” size. Remember, he was studying and going to school when they called him up. Probably in shape but not peak NFL-ready. He also needs to work with the QB coach to learn how to protect his body while running. I actually can ‘t wait to see him buffed up and ready to compete in the OTA’s, TC and practice games. He might be the reason Rivera just takes the best QB available and sticks with #19. What do you think he’s worth?. What will Detroit take to trade him? He’s just 31 and has at LEAST 5-6 outstanding years ahead of him. I personally would choose Watson over Stafford because of his age, but Detroit knows that he’s valuable. I hope you’re right. The knock on him is exactly what you say. Never has got them to the top. Is he a Cousin’s type guy who has excellent stats but can’t win the big ones? I think Stafford will command a very high price but if he goes for SUBSTANTIALLY less than Watson, he’ll be worth it. The NFC East is praying that Rivera doesn’t get Stafford or Watson. That’s the missing piece that has eluded this team for decades. If we get Stafford, add a burner WR in FA, add another excellent TE to compliment Thomas, pick up a top LB FA and draft for the OL for starters or depth, this team will be elite! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You are overstating Stafford's value by a lot, IMO. And surely Stafford wouldn't be option 1 if Watson could be had for the same price. I happen to think that Stafford may well be our #1 target, but not at the price you suggest. If the Lions refuse to trade him for less than that, he will remain a Lion. |
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
Stafford: Barring a serious injury, will be highly productive for at least 4 more years, maybe even a couple/few more.
Watson: Barring a serious injury, will be highly productive for 10+ more years. Even if you assume the talent is even (edge to Watson for me), age separates the compensation drastically. Note - Estimated years are my expressed written opinions/estimates. Could be wrong on both. |
Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
We got Alex Smith at a similar point in his career for two thirds. Smith won more than Stafford, but Stafford has put up better numbers. The demand is higher right now, with so many teams seemingly in the QB market, so I have little doubt that Stafford would cost more at this time. I've seen several suggestions that the price would be along the lines of a first and a third, and that sounds about right to me. Some folks feel a second and a third would do it, but I think that it would take at least first rounder. Three firsts and a player is really way too much, IMO, and I seriously doubt if even the Lions are thinking along those lines.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
Now that Watson has given his list of 2 teams he will go to, it’s time to shift the focus on Stafford or Matt Ryan. Of course I’d take Stafford over Ryan but even if we did trade for Ryan, it’s similar to Alex’s situation 2 years ago. Older QB that has 2-3 years left. Ryan is clearly the better passer tho
