Re: Washington, D.C., Approves Medical Use of Marijuana
As a few have already said just make it legal. It amazes me that you can go into a bar and put poison into your system yet smoking weed is against the law. Drinking makes a lot of people violent yet smoking weed makes people hungry and laugh. I don't use it but to me it's really just a waste of time trying to keep people from smoking it.

Re: Washington, D.C., Approves Medical Use of Marijuana
An excerpt from a memo issued by the Deputy Attorney General to all US attorneys (October 19, 2009):
The prosecution of significant traffickers of illegal drugs, including marijuana, and the disruption of illegal drug manufacturing and trafficking networks continues to be a core priority in the Department's efforts against narcotics and dangerous drugs, and the Department's investigative and prosecutorial resources should be directed towards these objectives. As a general matter, pursuit of these priorities should not focus federal resources in your States on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana.
Although it's just a memo, and nothing is binding, it is meant to be a guideline for all US attorneys as well as the rest of the DoJ -- including the DEA. Here the Deputy Attorney General is basically saying it's a waste of federal resources to prosecute individuals who are in compliance with state law. It sure would be nice to see more of this kind of attitude from the federal government when regarding state's rights. Even though they issued this memo, the DEA continued raids on individuals in Colorado who were in compliance with state law, but the Attorney General's office is taking some heat, because it looks like people in the DoJ are just ignoring their "guidance". It looks insubordinate. |
Re: Washington, D.C., Approves Medical Use of Marijuana
I would also add for those who favor "taxing the shit out of it," if it's taxed TOO much, then you'll just see people going back to the black market for it. Don't make the taxes on marijuana too prohibitive or that will defeat the purpose.

I just hope I don't have to live next to one of these potheads again. I can't emphasize how bad your place smells when you live next to a smoker, never mind a stoner.

Wouldn't mind that nearly as much. Either way I just as well avoid the issue and move to a smoke free apartment when I come back to the beltway.
As a few have already said just make it legal. It amazes me that you can go into a bar and put poison into your system yet smoking weed is against the law. As you mentioned it doesn't have nearly the same tendency to induce violence as alcohol (though it is possible), it also isn't a poison like alcohol. However what it definitely does do is impair motor function. I can't tell you how many of my stoner friends swear that it's safe to drive when they're high. Two of them ended up with DUI's because they failed field sobriety test while stoned. This can probably be reduced with education but it scares me how often people think they can drive when they're stoned. You can see from this poll that there isn't even an option that says "I don't drive when I'm high." Driving while high? - Marijuana.com Here's a simpler poll. 180 people say it's safe, 98 people say don't do it. Driving while stoned? Is it safe? - Page 12 - Marijuana.com I'm not totally against legalizing marijuanna. Personally I would love for nothing more then to hit gangs and the like were it hurts. However at the same time, my experience with pot smoking neighbors was so horrible that I'm hesitant to support such a cause with guns blazing. |
Re: Washington, D.C., Approves Medical Use of Marijuana
Pot smokers come in all shapes and sizes. Just like non-pot smokers, some are lazy, some are dirty, some are stupid -- and, some are smart, some are clean, some are ambitious. I'm willing to bet we all know at least one person we'd never expect to smoke that does.

Re: Washington, D.C., Approves Medical Use of Marijuana
Nice. I honestly believe that marijuana is the cure for cancer. I have read about lots of studies on tumors like this, and it seems there is some good evidence. Problem is, they always use the synthetic cannabinoids and that skews the test IMO -- I would never take a synthetic cannabinoid. Just get over it already and use the real thing for testing -- geez!
