Questions from a Jersey Virgin
No, I'm not a virgin from New Jersey, I've just never spent the big bucks on an NFL jersey. Don't ask me why...regardless, I really want a Sean Taylor jersey, but I'm kind of confused at all the options.
I see the "authentic" jerseys that go for like $250, which just seems absurd to me. There's also the replica jerseys for around $60, which seems like a reasonable deal. Then there's the stuff on eBay which runs anywhere from $20 to $600 for an autographed, game-worn jersey. Does anyone have any tips or advice? Given that ST may leave the team in a couple years, like everyone else has, I'm not inclined to drop $100+. Are the replicas really cheap or chintzy, or are they a decent deal? |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Authentics are thicker and have the actual stitched on letters like the players actually wear during the games.
The replicas, which are all I've ever bought, are thinner and have the numbers 'painted' on (for lack of a better term). They're not bad, I think most people probably have replicas, especially since the players come and go so often. There are also "repla-thentics," which are like a mix between the two. Their okay I guess. They're thinner than the real thing, but the letters are stitched on. If you go through eBay, just really look closely at the picture and at other buyer's comments. My neighbor's bought my mom a Riggin's jersey for her birthday a few years ago and I almost cracked up when she unwrapped it because it looked so bad. People make crappy knockoffs at home and sell them online. Her's is practically purple and the stripes on the sleeves are all wrong. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
If you're still a virgin, why hype it? We still think you're cool. It'll happen eventually.

 Good one. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
You can find pretty nice deals on Ebay for authentics. Most of them are knockoffs from China, but they still look pretty damn good for the money. Who's going to know the difference anyway? Just buy from reputable sellers and you'll be fine.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
I personally suggest just going in to a Skins store, buying frmo the SKins store online, or maybe from a Sporting Goods store. I honestly have bought dozens of jerseys on ebay and it is truely hard to tell what you are buying until it actually shows up. My advice is to buy the $75 jersey that the store sells, unless you have the cash flow to buy the authentic for $250. Another warning is that if you plan on buying the $250 jersey (or any current players jersey) be ready to hang it in the closet after a year with the free agency these days.
I will give you a few hints to look for in jerseys on ebay: (1) The nfl logo on the V neck: This one claims to be a Sean Taylor custom jersey and personally is garbage, (2) Check for signs of it being home made : This one claims to be an authentic Moss jersey for $49.99, and you can tell that the nfl logo on the V neck is not prefessionally stitched on like it should be. Sometimes these jerseys also have big numbers on the back and a bit smaller size numbers on the front. Its hard to tell sometimes from the pictures but I have seen them and they do not look good in person. Authentics usually also have elastic around the arm band: $289.99 but is also guaranteed real. Replica (much cheaper): $74.99 My own personal opinion is to avoid a black jersey as well. Hope the info helps. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
That Taylor jersey is crap, the stripes around the arms look like they're made out of material. Real Skins jerseys, authentic or replica don't have material for the stripes.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Awesome info - thanks guys!

Yea totally, I just wanted to stress that the jerseys on ebay are not that great for the most part. Just buy from the store. |

I agree. Except a word of warning, I got a custom replica last year with #81 and Monk (since I couldn't find a decent one on ebay), and the lettering is a little different than the regular jerseys. I've said this a few times, but it's probably something only I would notice, but it annoys me. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
There are some good deals out there on ebay if you know what you're looking for, but I agree for the most part they're knockoffs and bad ones at that.

|
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
You could try to find a Smoot # 21 authentic on eBay or similar for cheap and get the plate changed to Taylor.
Oh, and GTripp0012, bet you're excited about repeating 5th Grade for the third time, eh? |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Yeah, he's away on AIM. He probably left the page up and someone thought it would be fun to paste up pictures of INSANE TITTIES.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Then he needs to do a much better job of securing his PW, cos it's fucking up the site.

Looks good, but who even knows how to get a new name plate for a jersey put on. I visited my local dry cleaners to Freshen up my collection then the asian woman replied whats a jersey. Out of there like the place was on fire, I think a new name plate would be even more expensive. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
If you go to a pro shop they should be able to do it. I get my jersey's tailored all the time.

Yeah I need to get it tailored to fit this Godlike gutly frame. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
1. Find an athletics store in your Yellow Pages.
2. Take the jersey in. 3. Pay about $10. 4. Smile. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
What a bargain.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Best deal in town.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Yes. Find the Sporting goods store in your area that does the high schools and little league uniforms. They will be able to send your jersey out to there tailor and have the named changed for you. It might cost more then $10.00 though.
You will save money if you take the name off yourself before you bring it in. Just go to a drug store and buy a seam cutter for $1.99 and do it while you watch T.V.:httr: |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
I'd really like to get some of mine changed, I have Smoot and Bailey I could update. Is anyone wearing #56 yet this year? I've got a few Arringtons to update as well.
|
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
Yea I have a few Arrington jerseys myself.:( I was hoping Macintosh would where 56. But as far as I know nobodies taken it yet.
I was thinking about throwing my last name on a couple of them. But I might hold out a year and see if #56 gets picked up by a player I like. But you should definitely change your Smoot & Bailey jerseys. If there authentic just use the seam cutter like I stated before. Start with the name plate undo the stitching all the way across the top and down one side. This will let you cut the stitches from behind the name. That way if you slip you wont mess up the jersey as easily. Just take your time and be patient. It takes about 45min so you might want to do it in a few 15 min sessions. If it's a replica jersey you might just be able to flip the name plate over. Or if not have them screen the name directly on the jersey. The tailors usually can make name plates. But sometimes it hard to get them to match your jersey perfectly. |

I go to Chick's Sports in Woodland Hills, but most Little League teams have a favorite place to get jerseys and T-shirts printed. They can normally handle a plate swap. Bit of a drive for the East Coast boys. |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
You think they'd handle mail order?

Wherever you live you GOT to have a store that does a similar job. Hell, give 'em a call and ask, if they say "no" mail it to me I'll get them to do it and mail it back. We're a Burgundy and Gold Brotherhood, right? |

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
I've called a bunch of local screenprinting and embroidery services, all of them handle bulk type of work for entire teams. Not having much luck here.

Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
This seems like the right place. I feel like I'm getting the jersey itch again (that sounds like something you'd pick up after a weekend trip to Atlantic City) and I think I might break my own rule and buy a new one this season.
It's a toss up between Cooley, Griffin, and Washington. I want a white one. I really like Cooley (he's dreamy) but I figure that's going to be everywhere this season. I really like Washington, but I've also kind of wanted a Griffin jersey since halfway through the '05 season and the team just started selling them. So what do you guys think? |
Re: Questions from a Jersey Virgin
maybe I'll just get a custom Albright jersey and be done with it.
