Duckett or Sellers
I know Sellers is one of the best personalities and hardest working players on this team, pretty much he is currently the heart of the redskins. However, I've notice him getting the ball on third and short instead of Duckett. I would have no problem with this if we didnt have Duckett but WE DO. I feel like this give the ball to anyone other than duckett approach is eventually going to ruin our relationship with this young promising back..............your thoughts
also, weigh in on the clash between saunders and gibb's offensive philosophies to keep the thread long enough. Seems like a MAJOR issue right now. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
yeah,I am surprised the way they are using duckett,a lot of the moves they have done this yr dont make sense, but on 4th and 1 they give it to sellars instead of duckett,I dont have a problem with that, but whats duckett for?
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
With Portis out Duckett should..........should get a major part of the offensive running game. He has only carried the ball 12 times this season. The season is done. Time to see what depth this team really has.
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I don't know if they want to sign Duckett as a free agent. By not playing him as much as we feel they should, his value decreases on the market, and maybe that is the intent. If I were Duckett. I would not at all be pleased with the situation.

Re: Duckett or Sellers
i don't know what the redskins strategy is regarding duckett. a proven back in this league, all betts is to me is a proven back up. and the difference between Saunders and Gibbs is the run. Gibbs will run, and run, and run some more. Saunders tries to use the pass to set up the run. and if the run doesn't work, he will forget about it, completely

I do! Last year and the year before, we struggled BIG time on short yardage plays. I said it all along that we needed a big back, ala John Riggins type of back, and Duckett fits the bill. You keep Mike Sellers though, because I think he's very valuable with short yardage passing plays. I'd like to see a little more with Duckett as to how effective he is in receiving. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I see Duckett departing via free agency after this year. To his credit, he has been very professional about his lack of PT, and has knocked heads with the very few opportunities he has received. Sellers is definitely the more valuable since he's so versatile. He can play fullback, TE, and is a special teams ace. He's superior to Duckett in pass blocking, and he's a better receiver too. That said, on 4th and 1, I'd much rather see Duckett get the ball since he has a proven NFL track record as a short yardage specialist.

Re: Duckett or Sellers
the skins might be planning to let betts go and keep duckett. i would have no problem with that, i like betts but he seems to have a fumbling problem.

I believe that this is going to happen in the off season. Why give a 3rd round pick if your not going to keep him. Gibbs always wants and needs a big back. This would be a good combo with Duckett and Portis. Personally I like Betts but you can't keep all three. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
Who's TJ Duckett?
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
Again, 3rd and 1 to open the game and we ran off tackle with betts on a slow developing stretch play. WTF, i almost took a dump in the bar. What is wrong with giving the ball to a 260 back up the gut on 3rd and 1. They finally got it right later on but gimme a break.
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I think that Saunders is just now getting these looks to work to his advantage. Say we started running Sellers or Duckett up the gut from the get-go, teams would INSTANTLY know where it's coming. Sure, we should be able to get it, but wouldn't you love to see Sellers/Duckett come in on a third and one and Campbell to playaction and throw the deep ball?!
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I was screaming for Duckett yesterday. I think he needs MORE playing time for sure.

I wasn't all that impressed with TJ in short yardage. I believe he had two carries on 3rd and 1 situations, the first time he got stopped and it looked like a weak effort to me. He tends to tip toe a bit, almost reminds me of Ron Dayne a bit. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
it was great watching 5 guys at once trying to take him down. A heavier dose of duckett would wear them down so much faster, opening holes for betts. and yes, playaction would be killer with duckett in the mix, and he's gotta be a decent blocker at his size right?????

Re: Duckett or Sellers
This might sound weird, but bear with me...
For anyone who has played those racing games where you can upgrade your car and make it faster, better top speed, better acceleration, hear this: I see Duckett as the car right when you start out and you're first upgrading. You invest all you can into top speed and when you start playing, until the acceleration is better it's like it takes FOREVER to get to top speed. That's him. Once he gets to the LB level he's REALLY rolling for a big man, but it seems like it takes him FOREVER to get there. I know it didn't need a stupid analogy, but I'm trying to waste these last few minutes of work. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I agree, he takes a while to get going, but I still feel he is far more effective on short yardage than betts, who does tend to trip and fall a lot, get's ahead of himself sometimes.

As far as short yardage goes, If your the coach, who would you give it to on 3rd and 2? I'm giving the ball to Sellers...Duckett does a great job breaking the short yardage for a huge gain, but Sellers will get those 2-4 yds every time. I'm getting the first down w/ Sellers, and then handing it off to T.J. the next play. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
You're right Malcolm. I just started playing NASCAR on the PS2 and I had to deal with the same thing. Reminds me, I need to update my car...
THIS IS WAY OFF TOPIC,... Accepted is FUNNY AS HELL !!!!! Duckett does seem a little slow hitting the hole but once he picks up he is kinda like Ram-Man ! |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
Both backs are pretty smash mouth and going head on against them is suicide for almost any defender (almost always will roll over them) but I personally feel that sellers has more versatility then duckett and breaks more tackles
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
please repost, I didn't catch that redskin
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
sellers had had much more success on 3rd and short than duckett (as far as the redskins are concerned). he's 280 and he's got a real boom. TJ seems more like the big version of a speed back. he got decent yardage, but 3rd and short with 9 blockers... not so well :/.

What Duckett had a fumble yesterday. Betts has proven to be a very solid 2nd RB which we sould not let go of. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
This is a good analogy. I think that's why Duckett looked so good on the stretch play. It allows him to get to top gear and then cut back off his blockers without having to dance around defenders. All big backs are like that. If they have to do a dance at the line, they are easy to deal with. But, if they can run straight downhill it takes three guys 5 yards to get them down. Momentum = Mass X Speed. Stephen Davis, Mike Alstott, John Riggins, Gerald Riggs, and George Rogers were the same way.
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
If you never saw Duckett play and based your opinion about his skills from the posts here on this forum, you would think he is the second coming of Earl Campbell. Duckett's alright but Betts is more ideal to back up Portis (if he doesn't demand big money).
If you look at it rationally which type of RB better steps in when Portis can't play, an every down back like Betts or a short yardage plough like Duckett? Personally, I enjoy Duckett's style better, but I'm not the o-coordinator. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
Duckett going to leave should have never traded for him was a wasted draft pick. Seller was here already, he always gets the job done. Had a great year last season. But typical redskins had to go after the big name instead of the guy who dose the job day in and out.

Re: Duckett or Sellers
duckett should get da bulk of the carries becuz ladell alwayz scaries me cuz every game he getz popped n fumble and if duckett getz da bulk i dnt think that will happen n let ladell spell for him but sellers need 2 do whut he did last year and give him the ball wit TJ n da backfield

Actually I would think his value may go up - why you may ask? Well with running backs who play full time get a ton of wear n tear. As long as Duckett has kept in shape wouldn't he be better off not getting banged up like Portis was this year? Teams know what TJ can do and I don't think he has to prove it this year - he steamrolled in Atlanta and Philly was going to sign him and the Skins got worried about the Eagles getting Duckett so they gave up the bank to stop it - anohter reason to get a GM - this was a short-term mentality move. QBs who don't play get rusty, running backs who don't play but stay in shape get healthy and quickly regain their football instincts. My opionion is TJ is loving this because he is getting paid while not ripping up his body. |

Re: Duckett or Sellers
The guy who should be pissed is Big Mike, because Duckett being brought in demonstrates that the team doesn't have a whole lot of confidence in him to carry much of a load, which is absurd. OTOH, Joe didn't really use Betts at all when he first got here, either, and I think at one point after a preseason game where Ladell tore it up he was quoted as saying "Wow, I didn't know Ladell was that fast" or something.
Anyway, Duckett is almost assuredly gone next season but it is mystifying why we don't give it to him near the goal line for some downhill skull-cracking. |

Re: Duckett or Sellers
I don't think this season will hurt Duckett's marketability at all. He's a proven back, teams know what he can do. He'll find another team no problem if we let him walk.
|
Re: Duckett or Sellers
Remember that Sellers had like 1 carry before this year. He was a TE/FB combination physical freak blocking specialist and I think the Redskins were pleasantly surprised that he can run as well as he does. But, don't be fooled. His nice runs are mainly the result of the surprise factor. Teams just don't expect him to have the ball. Then they are confronted with tackling this rambling wreck from bad angles. If he were to become a regular feature of the offense they would be better prepared to deal with him. Before last year he was not a big receiver either. This year teams are accounting for that flat pass at the goalline so his numbers are down. He is a nice change of pace and he is perhaps the most uniquely versatile player in the NFL but I don't think he can carry an offense or even be the short yardage back. He shouldn't have to be.
Having said all that, I think there are some games coming up where he could give defenses problems. The New Orleans game is a huge challenge. Probably the best remaining team we play. I think Sellers might be just the type of beast that a team that thinks it's already made the playoffs might be too self-satisfied to prepare for or tackle. Throw him a few passes, maybe run a trap play or two on first down. I think he would be an excellent receiver on an a halfback option pass. Who's going to cover him downfield? We can get more out of him but we need to pick our spots. I have all these plays in my head. Then I watch the games and they run the fucking swing pass to Betts 5 times. I'm waiting for Coach Gibbs to give me that call. There is no reason that Duckett can't be effective in short-yardage. If T.J Duckett can't gain 1 yard then the problem lies up front. |

Re: Duckett or Sellers
betts should never get the ball on short yardage, he seems to trip up easily, and fumbles sometimes, should always be duckett or sellers
|

Plus, we don't want him injured in a pile too. We have plenty of "big backs" but need to keep our outside runner healthy. Losing Portis AND Betts would not only be bad for the team, but for Campbell's development too. He'd have to throw a LOT more and the defenses will know it. |
Re: Duckett or Sellers
I think the Redskins should go big when they get inside the 20 yard line. That doesn't mean they can't pass, but if you lineup Sellers at fullback and Duckett at tailback with double tightends, they should be able to overpower teams. It doesn't matter if they run Duckett or Sellers. I say use both. Playaction pass to Coley.
