Well Big Joe is gone
Joe Salave'a was released. I was really pulling for him, I thought he would make a come back this season. I take it as a surpise cut, hopefully last one

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
To bad, I really liked JOE!
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Wow that is extremely surprising. I guess that means they like Lorenzo Alexander, or Matthias Askew better, or maybe they're bringing in another DT??

Salave'a Released
I'm a little surprised. I thought Joe looked good this pre-season. I think this must have been a particularly uncomfortable meeting for Williams and Gibbs. I guess we should be encouraged that they are making the tough decisions. Hopefully they are also the right ones. Also gone are McAddley, Schmitt and Tucker. WR, FB, and OL respectively. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
He was getting burned big time in the 2nd quarter and 3rd quarter of the Pitt. game. I like him but was not getting it done.

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I'm suprised at this move, Sal was finally healthy. I thought he would have a good season and add nice depth.

That was my impression. Plus his mom died last season which I heard had a big impact on him (maybe more then most since he's a Somoa) |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
He was simply outplayed, that's all. Wasn't Alexander the kid that caught the helmet in the mouth? His hustle may have payed off.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Last year everyone was shocked when Nic clemons got cut & Montgomery & Golston made the team.
I hate to see JOe go, but I thought back in march it was a matter of time for him to get cut this season. Hopefully it means that we have potential w/Alexander et al. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I hope this means we actually have some young talent coming up. I liked Sal but everyone has to go some time.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Youth movement? I hope so. But he was a good locker room guy and a good story. We'll miss ya, Big Joe!

I'm getting the mild impression a youth movement could be taking root. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Sucks man. Joe is one of my favorite players. But I guess its time for the young guys to step up.

This wasn't a surprise to me :) I take it Montgomery is adequate as a backup.

Please. I said it back in April....of course I had Jared Clauss taking his spot on the roster |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I'm not really suprised by this move, it looks like they wanted a youth movement there and I hadn't heard much about him this preseason. I hope he catches on with another team, he's a nice guy and a decent player when healthy.

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
who's next?
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
stupid, losing depth
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
i really like big joe. with that out of the way, this is a good sign. the skins are that happy with the kids that they feel they can afford to let salaeva go
stupid, losing depth
how do you figure? |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I think they're pretty confident on their top 3 of Griffin, Golston and Montgomery.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Why so shocked? You could have any one of our starting rotation of D linemen cut and get the same if not better performance from the younger guys, and that is not saying much. Obviously coach thinks the younger guys show more promise than Joe. There will be a couple more surprises left for us before we get to 53.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I think this move says just as much about K.Golston, L.Alexander, D.Evans, and A.Montgomery as it does about Big Joe. Joe was a big body to plug holes, but his mobility has plummeted, and he hasn't really been a contributor for over a year. I'll miss having him around. I am encouraged that our D coaches are impressed enough with the Dline to make this move. I'm looking for Golston to have a breakout year. Fingers crossed.

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
great, first Marshall now Salave'a.
He's been doing well too. I read an article in the Wash. Times that him and Wynn were training extra hard this offseason with a body builder. It said they were pulling trucks and everything. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
This call had to suck for Joe Gibbs, Big Joe was definately a Gibbs type guy; where we might miss him is when the young guys get dinged up and still have to play at the same level- Big Joe was great for adding toughness to the team, and a mean streak when things got tough. I am going to miss that guy.

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
well i figure that because behind griff who is there? golston should be good but we dont know for sure, plus injury history in college. montgomery is not really impressive to me at all. so who is there?
when one of them goes down, which is the almost bound to happen during the season, we will be very thin. the weakness of our defense just got a bit weaker |

Then you have the kid Alexander competing for the back-up role. Wynn can also play DT, so we have plenty of depth at that position. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
yea i just dont see why you cut a pretty good player like him, i mean he started the first 2 preseason games.
mind bottling |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I co-sign with the youth movement theory. Cutting Marshall and Big Joe means the staff is impressed with the young guys.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I really think cutting Marshall and Big Joe was a bad idea this year. Honestly I think we should have gone out and fished one more DT tackle out of the draft last year or maybe a younger guy in free agency. As for Marshall, I think he was doing good, not as good as previous years but the whole defense struggled last year, he was just one out of 11.
|
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Hey--we've got to get younger, and the D last year was VERY bad, so it's not surprising that they go with some new blood. Both Marshall and Big Joe were great stories--real Gibbs-type skins--but the number just weren't there for those guys. We've got decent younger guys at both DT and LB, so I think it's the right move.
That being said, the young guys have to step up! Having a healthy Griff is good for whoever is next to him, and London will help all the LBs, so I am optimistic. But cheers to both Marshall and Big Joe for these last few years--Salavea especially was a great story and a fun guy to listen to. |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Yeah, best wishes to Salavea and Marshall. They were good to go and i would have loved to see them keep playing for the Redskins. Hopefully, Big Joe will get picked up by another team.

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
Does anyone think this slot is being opened up for a replacement not already on the team? remember Simeon Rice is still out there and his price is probably dropping. (just speculating folks...dont shoot me!)

No, we're rolling with what we have. I think you'll see Alexander and perhaps someone like Buzbee (Georgetown) battle for the last position. You have to figure D. Evans fits in there somewhere too. But I would be suprised if they brought in any new faces at this point. Ummm....Simeon Rice is most definitely out of the picture. |

I believe it may have had to do with his long term durability. The coaches probably have a close ear to the training room this year. Those with a prior injury history are probably being carefully watched. If Joe got nicked that may have been the reason... |
Re: Well Big Joe is gone
i was aite with the marshall release but joe, not so much

Re: Well Big Joe is gone
I think JLC summed things up pretty well here:
Big Joe getting cut has been lingering for a while - think I blogged about it well before the start of camp- but to his credit he looked healhty and active this camp. I thought if they keep 9 guys he'd have a shot, but even with Joe looking refreshed, they knew it was time to bleed some kids there, and Golston, Montgomery, Wilson and Alexander could likely all make this team (obviously Golston and Montgomery will). Joe would have had to have an truly outstanding camp to make the team, and given his injury history I can see why they would look at other guys. It stinks on a lot of levels, but that's the business. It's very cruel, especially this time of year. It's about time they went with more kids there and longterm it's the right move. From a chemistry standpoint, losing Lemar and Salave'a in the span of the week is a big blow to the locker room, but this is a team that was ranked 31st a year ago on D, so that's going to happen. It's one where your heart says keep him around, but the mind tells you something else. Overall, I like what the Skins are doing on D. Nine months ago they looked old, but now you see Landry, Taylor, Carlos, Rocky, Golston, Montgomery and even a kid like Wilson - who could fill that Chris Clemons role from a few years ago - and it bodes well for the future.
