Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
What is the greatest play in the history of the Super Bowl?
If I had to vote, I'd say the Eli scramble to avoid a sack and completion to Tyree using his helmet. Amazing. |

Re: Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
It was an amazing play, but not better than Mike Jones tackle at the goal line to stop a potentially game tying TD as the clock ran out..

Re: Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
pfft, Its john riggins run!
Come on guys ;) |

Re: Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
I think this was the greatest SB ever (not sure what I'll think in the morning), so I guess I'll give the nod to that play for greatest in SB history.
It sure will be legendary. |

I wouldn't say this was a better play just a more obviously game outcome determinant. In terms of shear spectacle and athletic skilll achievement the Manning/Tyree play was better. |
I dunno. I think the last 3 minutes were pretty awesome, but otherwise it was pretty dull. I thought the Pats-Panthers Super Bowl was among the best.
It was a defensive struggle, but I thought that was great simply because the Pats were playing in it.
I dunno, dull is totally subjective, but I was expecting a total snoozer of a game, and I got shocked. |

I tend to agree with Gtripp. There weren't a slew of mistakes, so it wasn't sloppy, it was a defensive struggle which made it a great game. Look at how many tipped passes there were and how much pressure there was on both sides of the ball. I think it was the best super bowl ever too. Great game. Throw in the fact that they were 14 point underdogs, and not given a chance and you have the best SB ever. |
Re: Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
That entire play to Tyree was amazing. Just absolutely incredible. It's probably the best that I'VE ever seen in a Super Bowl, but I'm not sure that it'd be the best ever. I think time will tell, but I'd be surprised if it weren't at least in the conversation.
If that play were the one for the go-ahead TD, then yes, I think you have the best play in Super Bowl history without too much of an arguement. |
Re: Best play in the Super Bowl all time???
I'm not sure if it's the best ever but it's probably the best one i've seen or i guess the best that comes to mind....

Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
I've watched every Super Bowl since 82....... It gets my vote as the Best "clutch catch " ever.... Any objections????????

That play was two of the most amazing plays I've ever seen combined into one play. |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
Absolutely. The throw and the catch has got to be the most amazing play in recent Super Bowl history.
I don't know how anyone can call that game a "snoozer." I couldn't believe how hard I ended up cheering for the Giants - with the obvious exception of the Skins' games I say that was the best Super Bowl I've ever seen. |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
The game was definitely far from being a snoozer. It was a top 5 Super Bowl no doubt.
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
In the final minutes of a SB to pull off that scramble, then the pass and unreal catch. That kept the drive alive, they end up scoring the go ahead TD.
That will IMO go down as one of the all time greats in the clutch, not to mention the underdog factor. |

Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
It was a great play but I think we have to wait for the dust to settle a bit before we crown it the best ever.
It was a great play but I think we have to wait for the dust to settle a bit before we crown it the best ever.
In live time, I thought for sure that the play would warrant a challenge of Tyree trapping the ball on the ground before clutching it with two hands, but in super slow-mo, it was absolutely remarkable that he could hold pin the ball against his helmet with Harrison tugging at his arm, and he somehow got that second hand solidly on the ball. Just incredible concentration, where he cannot even see the ball at that point.
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
That was the modern day "the catch". They did that on 3rd and 10ish. They do not win the Super Bowl without that fortunate no sack and catch.
Great play and probably won't get the credit it deserves as being a prolific Super Bowl play. |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
It was an awesome sight to watch Eli come out of that pile and throw it, then you have Tyree make such an acrobatic catch with Harrison all over his back. Definitely greatest clutch catch, not sure greatest play though...
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
Maybe Tyree deserves to be in the Hall of Fame? He now has a disinguishable-trademark catch, he must be HOF worthy. Swann got in easily w/ his!!
One last jab to the HOF voters taking so long to get Monk in. Swann got in easily...Monk waits 8 years... |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
MVP = Tyreeli.
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
This catch will remember along with the Montana to Clark catch to beat the Cowboys in the playoffs. Actually, this one was more meaningful cause they beat the so called "best team ever".
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
Not sure if history will judge it that way or not. In Superbowl history, I can only think of one non-TD catch that is a consistent highlight film - Swann's acrobatic catch over Dallas. While Tyree's catch was certainly clutch and, if it had been made by Plaxico, would cement it's importance and possibly (as it did with Swann) gain him HOF notice.
I am not sure that enough factors coalace for the catch to be considered historic. Close but not quite, mainly b/c it was made by someone who will always be a footnote in SB history. For example, although not a SB moment, "The Catch" is historic b/c: a) It was a great play; b) it scored a touchdown; c) It was thrown by Joe Montana (not b/c it was caught by John Taylor) and d) it ushered in a new dynasty while marking the exit of an old one. Of these "historic" like qualities, Tyree's catch has only one of these factors: It was a phenomenal play. In the years to come, Eli may achieve HOF potential (God I hope not) and that drive may end up being a turning point in his career and could be the beginning of the end for the Patriots (I doubt it). In which case, it may become "historic" as part of Eli's legacy. Otherwise, I just see it as one of the multitude of great plays that have occurred in Super Bowls and which one expects to see in championship games. When you get the two best teams on the field, you expect magic. Not all such magic that occurs, however, is historic. |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
The Catch was great, but I thought The Escape was better.
|
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
Football already has "The Catch". It does not yet have "The Escape".

That's a really good one. But what about the catch part? |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
Greatest play has to be Riggo's run.
Greatest catch; the Tyree catch is up there, but Montana to Taylor in SB XXIII would probably get my vote as #1 (as much as I hate the 49ers). Honorable mention would have to be Max McGee in SB I. 37 yd one-handed TD catch and another 13yd TD....all while hungover from a night of partying. He was probably on the sidelines between plays...... :vomit: |

Strangely, the first thing I thought of when I saw that escape was last season when the Giants' Kiawanuka didn't finish his sack of Vince Young |
Re: Tyree Catch Greatest Clutch Catch in SB?
I think Lynn Swann's catch in Super Bowl 10 will always be the greatest catch in super bowl history, but the Tyree catch last night might go down as the most important because it help alter NFL history so profoundly.

Lynn Swann's catch was certainly the most graceful, but doesn't hold water vs Tyree's catch with 3 men around him and 1 hand on his arm from the beginning of the catch to the end, plus using his helmet to secure it and not allowing it to hit the ground. You throw in all the circumstances, and I am certain it would be on the top of my list. |

Don't forget to add that one of the defenders was Rodney Harrison. |

Plus, possibly the dirtiest player in the history of the game. |
