Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Jason Reid just got off the phone with Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, who said he met with owner Daniel M. Snyder, executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and Coach Jim Zorn for two hours today at Redskins Park.

Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Well I guess everything's been laid out on the table. Boy, if walls could talk. I'd like to know exactly what was said. Hope it all pans out-all in all I suppose it sounds ok...but I won't hold my breath

Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Basically Campbell probably said, "if I have a great year get ready to pay me through the teeth" or I might just become a FA. **** YOU very much!!
|
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Ironically the Redskins are now showing the Broncos how you're suppose to handle this type of situation.
Basically Campbell probably said, "if I have a great year get ready to pay me through the teeth" or I might just become a FA. **** YOU very much!!
Restricted Free Agent. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Actually, SFREDSKIN. We have a lot of tools to keep him from becoming an FA. Especially if the CBA ends up not getting renewed. In fact, if the CBA falls through teams get an extra transition tag and it makes it very difficult for players to even become FAs. The clubs will gain a ton of power by the CBA getting abolished.
I really don't see Campbell deserving of the upper level QB money unless he really shows a ton this year. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
I'm basically wondering if Snyderrato told Campbell and Zorn that if they are in it together then they'll be out of it together if we don't at least make the playoffs this year. And also if they told Campbell anything like "if you make it to the NFC championship or SB, THEN we'll pay you a hefty contract, otherwise you will have to settle for something in between until we find our guy...IF you want to remain a Redskin."

Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
What a crock this whole thing turned out to be!
Jason Campbell should either be appointed Ambassador to North Korea because he is the greatest diplomat in America or he has to be the most naive football player in the NFL. I cannot believe that Campbell didn't have his agent in that meeting! He must be out of his mind to go into that ridiculous meeting unrepresented. They tried to dump him, didn't they? They dropped the gauntlet. Campbell and his agent should have told management that it's on now. As far as his agent is concerned, not being there borders on malpractice. Management could have promised Campbell any damn thing in that meeting and it means nothing! Campbell's agent should have gone into that meeting with a list of demands and any promises made by management should have been put on paper in the form of a legal agreement. JC has them over a barrel, for goodness sake! Can't his stupid agent see that? Stupid, stupid, stupid! |

If the kid has the kind of year some of us genuinely expect him to have Jason knows all this muck is irrelevant. |

After he raped us during the Hall resigning I doubt that he would have had any leverage in the meeting if he had he attended. |

No, I would not say that at all! What if Jason gets hurt? Then he's screwed. Look, this is the NFL, not Pop Warner football. Players need to make sure they achieve financial security through football, if they can. His agent needs to look out for him now. If need be, his agent needs to protect him from himself. At this point JC should know that he can't trust Snyder at all. If I were his agent, he would not be engaged in any football activity where he could be injured until I negotiated a new contract with a whole lot of guaranteed money for him. Snyder could then choose to either pay JC or to go into the season with Todd Collins as his starter. And you'd better believe that there would be a nasty media campaign waged by my side, if necessary. |

If were true, then JC would need a new agent. But I don't see how Hall's contract is relevant to JC's. They are entirely separate. |

Thankfully JC is more mature than that. He realizes it's business. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
I understand that it shouldn't matter, but that does not mean that it doesn't. If somebody had just gotten the best of you a month or 2 ago do you think that you would let him do it again anytime soon? I agree to disagree with you there so no need to continue with that argument.
On the flip side, lets say that the agent was there. Exactly what would he have leveraged for? Campbell is still under contract. I believe that someone said that he is only going to be a RFA next year. That means that no matter what somebody else wants to offer him the Skins can match if they desire to. Lets take it a season beyond next. There is always the Franchise tag. The bottom line is that even if the agent (Seagal) had been in the meeting, he has absolutely zero leverage to make demands. |

Maturity is knowing that you need to look out for your own interests. It's business, alright. That's why JC needed representation in that meeting. If for no other reason, so that his agent could get a feel for what the Skins management's plans for JC are now that they failed to get Cutler. I'm not looking at this purely as a fan. I'm also a human being who doesn't like the idea that another human being might be played for a fool just because he is decent. Snyder created this situation. I were JC's agent I'd make Snyder pay to get out of it because that would be in my client's best interests. |

I had my say. I'm going to drop it now. Everyone else can go back to pretending that everything is going to be fine between JC and the Skins now that the Cutler trade didn't go down. |

Exactly. Not to mention JC is under contract this year and is an RFA after this season. Not sure what leverage KI is talking about. I do think it's safe to say Joel Segal knows a hair more about the business than KI or any of us. If he needed to be there he would have been. Just because Jason was unsuccessfully shopped in a trade doesn't give him any more leverage than if he wasn't. Plus I doubt their meeting had anything to do with a contract. It sounds like it was more "this is what happened, this is how we feel about you, this is how we want to move forward at this point, what are you thoughts?" And they went from there. Campbell has drawn national praise for his handling of this situation, and frankly I'm proud that he's our quarterback. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
But, how do we know his agent wasn't there? KI, it just seems like you make assumptions, based on your disgust with the FO. No one knows how it went down in the room. JC said he got alot off his chest. That may very well mean he did and said what you want him too. But how does acting like a whiny Cutler improve his hand in any way. I just don't get the logic.

I agree Campbell has handled himself well, but in fairness he does not have the same options that Cutler had. Campbell's only realistic chance to start next season is right here...if he were to pull a cutler type power play he would likely end up on someone else's bench. And that's not a good place to be in a contract year. Campbell didn't just make the classy move...he made his only move. |

And I'm not talking about Saunders 700 page playbook that ended up being part what Saunders wanted and part what Gibbs wanted. I'm talking about a real system. I think he'll do well next year. If he doesn't, we don't resign him but he at least deserves the chance. If I was Campbell I probably would of been raising hell long time ago. "Will ya'll make up your mind what offense you want to run for crying out loud!" This is a case where I really hope the good guy wins. Some seem sure he's gonna fail, some seem sure he won't. I'd just like for him to have a clear cut chance to succeed. That's all any of us can ask for. |

I don't think he'd be on the bench for long. IMO JC could walk in right now and start for SF, Jets, Buffalo, TB, Miami, Clev, Houston, Det and Minn. |

Whoa whoa. Houston? Schuab is one of the better QB's in the league right now. Check up on his numbers for yourself. Pennington had the second highest QB rating last year and the only reason they're having a competition is because Pennington is getting up there in years . Cleveland? Maybe but not a walk in and start type deal. The others I agree, but I think you're overselling Campbell at this point. Right now his greatest value by far is Year 2 in Zorns system. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
It's sad that the upstanding character guys in sports like Jason Campbell are always the unpopular ones. You have head cases like TO, Chad Johnson, and Cutler throw tantrums and act like little kids, and they get all the attention from the media and the fans. Jason could have done many things and has chosen to be the better person, act like a professional, and move on.
Someone mentioned that JC should look out after himself financially and demand more money or go to another. Given the type of person that JC appears to be, I would imagine he's a responsible person that probably has wisely managed his money and is probably not hurting for money right now. Besides, JC probably realizes that the best way for him to improve his situation, is take advantage of next season to prove to the Redskins and the league that he can play the position and take it to the next level. I'm surprised that Redskins fans don't remember how Art Monk carried himself throughout his career, and how he handled the whole situation of not being elected to the Hall of Fame. |
Re: Campbell: Meeting "Very Successful"
Campbell is a class act that is not going to let the media know anything anyways. What was he supposed to say? We're going to get the same practice, preparation from JC as before. Let's hope JC rips up the NFL this year.

Even if JC went to one of the teams on your list he would have to battle a guy who knows the offense better then he does and win the starting job. Otherwise he risks being on the bench in his contract year...that's way to big a risk to take. He needed to keep a cool head here...and to his credit he was able to do it. |
