Late Round Gems

As many of you pointed out Shanahan likes to pick his running backs in the later rounds. I 've started to study the backs out there and there are some gems that we can get late in this draft. I really want us to pick lineman in the first 2 rounds, if we don't trade back into the first. So I ask you, who are some late round guys that you know that we should check out? All positions

I've talked about LeGarrette Blount in other threads. At his best he reminds me of a Steven Jackson because he can run on the inside and the outside. He won't go down from arm tackles. At his worst he reminds me of Lendale White. After his well known suspension this year I think he will fall in the draft, possibly into the 4rth or 5th round. Maybe even the 6th.

Another guy I would like to see us get is LaMarcus Coker. He has ran a 4.28 40 and excelled against top competition when he was at Tennesseee. After he left Tennessee he went to Hampton and has continued to shine. His issues are well documented but he has the talent to excell in special teams and has IMO- Chris Johnson/ Devin Hester type talent. Only comes around every few years. Between the 2 players I'd pick LaMarcus handsdown.

That is the only part I don't agree with.
There is a new Sultan McCullough, Jerome Mathis, and Albert Connell every year. It just so happens that Johnson has great vision along with his blinding speed. Devin Hester is lightning quick but is not a quality WR or CB, Not sure why he isn't a returner anymore.

People are more likely to fall in love with the Chris Johnson type back this year but they are more likely to get a Sultan McCullough instead. I would be very happy if there is a back in the later rounds that has vision and knows how to make one cut and go upfield like Terrell Davis.

Unfortunately I don't follow college ball well enough to add a sleeper pick.

Who? Never heard of him.

Never heard of James Starks, (RB Buffalo) either

I can only comment on 2 of these guys, shipley & Grimm.

I'm a Hokie so have watched a lot of Grimm this year. He's small, 5'11, 225, which might mean by the time he's at the combine he's 5'9, 215. I just can't see him making it in the nfl, but if he does he'll have to play strong safety. I don't think he has the speed or coverage ability. I doubt he could bulk up to play LB & maintain his speed. He's definitely an undrafted free agent, I will bet $ on that (well, w/the caveat that the raiders might take him in the 3rd round).

Shipley seems like he could move up to the 2nd or 3rd rounds if he has a good combine. I think a lot of scouts will want to see his 40 times. I got sick of hearing people compare him to welker. He seems more of an outside flanker to me.

There's also Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, DB from Indiana (PA). I just like the name really. Still, he is considered a 4th-5th round choice if I recall correctly
James Starks, who does he resemble? what type of runner is he?
Well he's a converted QB/DB who only recently started playing RB. Honestly...I think he can be like a Josh Cribbs type. I wouldn't necessarily want him as the every down back, but he's the kind of player you want to find ways to put the ball in his hands in as many different ways as possible. He's great in the open field.

Re: Late Round Gems

If we're talking about guys that can be 3rd down/returners, Noel Devine of W. Virginia is a good one. He's lightning quick. A poor man's sproles, but probably just as fast. Size & durability will be his issues.

Re: Late Round Gems

Just read the Kiper ESPN insider article about guys who shouldn't be coming out. Noel Devine is on the list (but he says he's on the fence about him). Here's some of it:

"Thaddeus Gibson, DE, Ohio State Buckeyes: An interesting guy. I see Gibson as more of a stand-up outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, and there are a lot of them in this draft class. He had his hand on the ground a lot, so it'll be an adjustment, but his size (6-foot-2, 240) fits. Another guy that I think could use another year, but I still see him as a player with second-round potential in April.

Dominique Franks, DB, Oklahoma Sooners: He didn't have an outstanding year. I thought he showed outstanding ball skills as a sophomore, which he still has, but another player (like Snead) that had too many highs and lows in 2009. He has return ability and should work out well, but he needs to improve in areas besides his ball skills. I have him with a second- to third-round grade right now if his workouts go well.

Jason Worilds, DE, Virginia Tech Hokies: Another player I thought was better as a sophomore. He had eight sacks in 2008 and dropped to just four this year. The issue this year: He appeared very blockable, which is not what you want to see out of a defensive end. Pluses are that he's one of the strongest pound-for-pound players in the draft and will test well. Has solid natural instincts as well. I see him in the third or fourth, but a good senior year could have really helped.

Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia Mountaineers: As of this writing, Devine is still on the fence. I think he should go, because he has proved to be durable despite his small size (5-8, 176) and I think because we have such a good feel for what he is, another year won't help his stock as much as it'll expose him to risk. He just doesn't help himself by coming back in my mind (graduation-versus-football earning power discussions aside). He has great change of pace and incredible cutback skills, and his pure speed is an attention-getter. You don't catch him from behind. As a third back and potential return man, he could be dangerous. I have him as a potential third-rounder in April.

Joe McKnight, RB, USC: He's explosive and really gifted; he has been since he was in high school. This year he went from being a great pure runner to showing he can attack the hole and showing some burst through the hole. There was a physical component to his game he put forth this year that had been lacking before. His issue will be durability/health concerns. Running backs are going to drop this year, I think, because most teams are pretty loaded up. There's a surplus right now. I see McKnight as a potential second-rounder; you just hope for him that his fluid speed transfers well in testing.

Bryan Bulaga, OL, Iowa Hawkeyes: He had a great game in the Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech, so he's leaving on a high note. He could land in the first round; he's very talented. He has good feet and moves well, but his best asset is his leverage. You really have to mix it up to beat him, because he always has leverage. He had a few rough spots, but he's a junior and his talent will overcome those lapses on tape."

Usually these guys are the ones who fall to the later rounds. His main point (which i didn't feel like posting) was about Jevan Snead. He said he needed to stay an extra year to improve his draft stock. Could be a good sleeper in the late rounds...

Thanks a lot for posting this! Actually, he says Devine is on the fence, meaning Devine isn't sure whether to come out. Kiper clearly says that Devine might as well come out because he can't prove much more by staying.

I forgot about my boy Worild's. I think he's making a mistake by coming out, but it really depends on who drafts him & whether he plays DE or OLB. HE's too small to be a hands down DE, but could gain weight. I would love to see him available in the 5th or later & the Skins draft him to play SAM.

he's been a pass rusher & would probably prefer to play de, but they did drop him in coverage a bit & he seemed to fare well. Moves laterally pretty well.

I'll at least agree that as a 4-3 OLB he's somewhat of a project. Would take him at least a year to catch on & get some pt, if he made the team.

definition of a late round gem would be somebody like andre roberts from the citadel...look him up. that's what defines a gem...not a decent player that is a projected 2 or 3rd round pick.
No one talks about Lewis, the qb from Duke, but this guy played against teams that usually overmatched his & he put up numbers. Has a great arm & athleticism. I look for him to rise on draft boards during the combine. Right now he looks like a late rounder.

I wanted to mention him but I'm a Duke fan so I figured that there was a little bias on my part. Both he and Skinner have chances to be late round hopefuls.

Never heard of James Starks, (RB Buffalo) either
Well just so you do know, it's this guy. Remember this face, this is the face of our next franchise QB

I've long loved Skeletor. We definitely should draft him.

Re: Late Round Gems

Jason Fox - OT -....The U
Overall Grade: 59

Run Blocking - Has enough range to effectively pull and flashes the ability to cut off linebackers at the second level. Works to sustain once locked on but doesn't get much push. While he is agile enough to be an effective zone blocker he takes too many false steps and will have a difficult time hooking 5-techniques and scooping 3-techniques at the NFL level unless footwork improves.

Edward Wang - OT - Virginia Tech
Overall Grade - 65

Run Blocking - Athletic enough to hook 7-techniques and scoop 3-techniques when footwork is sound, but the amount of false steps he takes is a concern at this point. Doesn't appear to have the necessary lower-body strength to drive five-techniques off the ball. On the flip side, he gets into position quickly and flashes the ability to sustain blocks once locked on. Shows above-average body control and flashes the ability to get into position at the second level.

Ed Wang is a pretty agile guy - was a TE until a couple years ago. He made major progress at VT & might be able to develop a lot more & become a solid nfl tackle. He's known to get flagged a lot in pass pro, not sure why. Couldn't disguise a hold very well I guess.

I would be excited if we could get Noel Devine in the late rounds. I'm not so sure he won't be picked before the 3rd though and we don't have a 3rd. We need a guy that can break some, a gamechanger.

I wouldn't mind getting Noel too. To bad that won't be until next aprils draft...

Dan Lefevour? 3rd or 4th rounder I guess, but I like him as much as any of the 1st round QBs.

I would love to see the Skins' draft Cody Grimm & snag Blount in the late rounds ... I'm already pumped for 10' ..

:food-smil
Sidenote : I was at that packers vs cardinals game last week and that by far was one of the most insane football moments of my life .. I love the Skins', been a fan since birth and grew up in the DC area but the Cardinals are quite a team to follow, truly explosive and Beanie Wells is something special ..

I would be really surprised if anyone drafts Cody Grimm. He will have to shock some people at the combine.
