Michael Wilbon Leaving WaPo

I enjoyed reading his articles. Even though the frequency of his contribution to DC sports has been steadily decreasing he will be missed.

Wilbon is great on PTI and ABC but it seems like he's not a big NFL fan to me for some reason.

He is a big Bears fan and back in the day he was my go to for the most accurate opinion on the Redskins. I still enjoy his columns, good luck Wilbon!

Where's he going?

I've been reading him for 25 years or so, plus PTI. Very opinionated, but makes you think about sports in the broader context of society. I hate to see him leave the post, but I'm not surprised he has options.

ESPN. He's pretty much a full time TV personality these days appearing on not only PTI but a lot of the NBA programming on the ESPeN.

He'd be good with the NeverendingBasketballAssociation.

Or better received in the Windy City.

I miss the glory days of Kornheiser's angst and humor counterbalancing Wilbon's sober and strong opinions in the Post. I thought their best print work was when they both had regular Post columns. They're both TV stars now, so I'm surprised that Wilbon stayed as long as he did, but I'll miss his columns. Didn't agree with all of them, but Wilbon always made you think about where you stand on a given topic.

I like Wilbon for the most part except when he plays the race card.

Yeah, he's really good at both IMO. He got a lot of studio time during the playoffs last year.

I don't think he "plays the race card" as much as he points out how issues of race are often percieved by the public, particularly the black community. e.g. his recent column about Shanahan benching McNabb, he said he doesn't think Shanny was racist, just that there is a history of mistrust between older black DC residents & the Skins due to the latter's slow integration.

Agreed. Wilbon is great and it's sad to lose him. Thank god for PTI. All the best Mike... :headbange

I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my Cheerios when I was in grade school and reading Wilbon in the WaPo print edition. That sports page back in the day really went a long way to getting me into sports in my childhood.

Cheers, Wilbon. I didn't always agree with your opinions, but you were almost always a good read.

Very sad to see Wilbon leave the Post but I only wish him well in all his future endeavors.

The Washington Post sports section used to have more depth of excellent writers than just about any other sports section in the country. [The Boston Globe and LA Times were comparable in terms of depth but not really too many other papers.] But the depth is no longer there.

When/if Thomas Boswell and/or Sally Jenkins "take their talents" elsewhere, the Post will not be any better than a couple dozen other sports sections in the US.

Wilbon is great because he's completely honest... i respect him more than any other columnist, personality, etc... whatever you want to call him. PTI is a daily DVR ritual for me...

Re: Michael Wilbon Leaving WaPo

Honestly I respect Wilbon and wish him the best of luck at ESPN, but my everlasting memory (albeit limited memory, as I'm relatively young and have only read his articles for the past 5-6 years) of his time at the Post will be the article he wrote after Sean Taylor's death, which I highly disliked. I felt like he wrote that article based off assumptions, and it was just taking the easy way out and writing a cheap piece of journalism.

He's always been a plus-minus writer with me, occasionally I read something by him that I like, and occasionally I read something that he wrote that just stinks of cheap journalism. In the end I wish him the best at ESPN, but I won't be too upset that he's not at the Post anymore. I'd be a hell of a lot more upset if someone like Dan Steinberg left the Post, I love reading the Sports Bog because it gives me a better connection with the local DC athletes from my favorite sports teams.
